The coaches of the How-Winn cage conference named James Hawkins of De Sales and Dale Blumbagen of Ossian Public to their all-conference first team. Inez Lansing and Clarinda Bodensteiner of De Sales and Janette Monroe of O.H.S. were selected as members of the girls' all-star team. 1934 Lester Hexom, manager of the Decorah Produce station, was bound, gagged and robbed by an unidentified bandit. The holdup occurred when Hexom arrived to open his produce house in the morning. The robber, who had hidden on the premises, escaped with $93. M. J. Carter, prominent longtime Ossian attorney, passed away on January 24th. Mr. Carter, as a child, traveled with his parents to Bloomfield Township arriving in 1856. Their first home was a log school house. Mahlon J. Garter was a prominent member of the Ossian community. Many of his recollections are included in this work. The city council agreed to grant the Ossian Hotel a thirty percent reduction in charges for city water to compensate for rest room facilities furnished to the public. The former Sobolik building, now the Lee and Watne meat market, was purchased by Clem Blocker. (Presently Parks' Cafe.) Dr. J. A. Juen, a local physician for the past thirty years, passed away. He acquired the practice of Dr. Sayers in 1904. G. R. Nicholson purchased the old brick building on Mechanic Street that was used as an early egg house by Williams and fitted as a hotel by Larkin Green. He established a garage and repair shop in the structure. The mayor and council were all re-elected, although none had agreed to stand for office. The voters were given a blank ballot and one hundred fourteen of them wrote in the names of the incumbents. Wm. H. Schroeder bought the remaining merchandise from the estate of Frank Figge. He will conduct a clothing business in the Figge building under his own name. Kathreen Gunderson was this year's county spelling champion. She advanced to the state contest at Des moines. Editor Schmitz withdrew his name as a candidate for the state senate. He explained that circumstances would not permit him to serve a full four year term. Louis Schutte, longtime furniture dealer at Postville, purchased the stock of Fleischer & Helwig. His local outlet will be known as the Ossian Furniture Store. These students were the graduates this spring from O.H.S.: Ralph Anderson, Nora Aslaksen, Clifford Bematz, Palmer Johnson, Ernest Larson and Mildred Swenson. The De Sales graduates in 1934 were: Marjorie Bauman, Frances Collins, Tommy Collins, Cleon Dessel, Richard Klein, Arnold Moellers, Bartholomew Powers, Willard Spillman and Hugh Staska. George Lansing, secretary of the school board, released the annual financial statement. Receipts were $25,355; disbursements, $10,699. The three male teachers were paid $3420 and the four women received $2970. The businessmen decided to reinstate the barrel-roll this summer. Two five dollar and eighteen one dollar bills will be awarded each week. The Dessel Auto Co. advertised that prices have been further reduced for the new V-8 Fords. A coupe is now priced at $505; a four door sedan, $615. The Union Produce Company announced that they have lowered the price of gasoline to 16.7¢ a gallon. This is two cents less than competitors in neighboring towns. Raymond Etteldorf graduated Magna Cum Laude from Columbia college. He has been assigned to the American College Gregorian University at Rome by Archbishop Beckman. He will enroll in a three year course in theology. Supt. C. F.
