Fifty two local businessmen met at the hotel and organized a commercial club. Cleo Cahill was elected president ; A. S. Andresen, secretary; Fred Figge, R. E. Montagne and H. J. Etteidorf, executive committee members.

A kitten ball league of four teams was formed this fall. Leo Dessel was elected president of the association. Jack Weir was captain of the Cardinals; Wayne Draves, leader of the All Stars; Wilbur Peyer, head of Peyer's Pirates; and Frank Dessel, in charge of the Robins. Gehling's Tigers and a Nordness team joined the following week. A round-robin series of games was played at Cornell Park. Admission--10¢ for adults.

Grocery prices were on the decline during this year of the depression. Grovdahl Bros, advertised: kraut—3 lb. can for 25¢; Campbell's soup—; peas—A cans for 25¢; peanut butter--2 lb. jar at 19¢; sugar 11 lbs—50¢; salmon—1 lb. can @ 14¢; and supersuds—7¢ a box. Cahill's Market offered: pork roast—8¢; beef roast —10¢; cheese--12¢; pork steak—10¢ ; and round steak—12¢.

Frank Figge featured a two week sale with these bargains: men's suits--$5.75 summer suits—$2.48; Florsheim shoes—$5-75; other shoes—$1.28 to $1.98; broad cloth shirts—39¢ ; denim overalls—69¢ ; and chambray shirts--39¢.

The Democrats, led by presidential candidate Roosevelt, swept into public office in a landslide. Editor Schmitz became the fourth Ossianite to serve in the Iowa Assembly. Previous representatives were John DeCou and H. P. Nicholson. Merchant H. A. Baker was a member of the state senate. Julian Moe was elected Winneshiek county clerk of court. A former Ossian boy, Theodore Werner, became the congressman from the second district of South Dakota.

A home-talent minstrel show, sponsored by the Legion Auxiliary, was presented at the opera house. The entertainers included: Interlocutor—Cleo Cahill; Primrose and Dockstetter—Glen Oyloe and Selmer Grovdahl; Minstrels—Frank Dessel, R. E. Montagne, Mrs. Montagne, Mrs. Nanfred Sand, Mrs. Selmer Sevatson Mrs. C. R. Nicholson, Mrs. R. L. Gilbert, Mrs. Ben Nesvik, Marjorie Nereson, Irene Meyer, Josephine Etteidorf, Tillie Etteidorf, Emerentina Barthelme, Lucille Dvorak and Marie Wolfe.

A movement to provide Christmas baskets for the needy was initiated in December. Contributors were asked to leave donations at the former Jones store.

Two members of the Figge family were elected to statewide offices: Greg as deputy of the Knights of Columbus and Fred J. as president of the Iowa Bankers.

THE OSSIAN SCOUTS

The first recorded reference to scouts was in a Bee item of 1912. It read: "The Boy Scouts met with John and Myron Vance." We find nothing more on this early troop.
