1928There were still 12 daily trains serving Ossian in January—eight passenger and four freight. The model A Ford was on display at the Dessel Auto Co. Potential purchasers were treated to a free demonstration ride. The town council passed a resolution of necessity for paving. This measure set forth the proposed area of paving by the highway commission and the assessments to property owners along Main street. The state will pay for the center strip of 18 feet. The total cost to residents is estimated at $31,322. An objector's meeting was held on Feb. 10. Ten property owners rose on opposition to the project. However, the town fathers adopted a resolution overruling rejections with councilman Lynch voting no. A resolution ordering construction of the paving improvement was passed with Lynch again dissenting. There were six bids submitted by interested contractors with Bemis & Schlick Des Moines gaining the work on their low figure of $27,356. The paving of Main street began at 8:30 on April 23rd. Mayor Schmitz dumped the first pan of cement into the huge mixer; Fred Figge poured the first dipper of concrete into the forms. So rapidly did the work progress, that 450 feet of pavement was completed by the 7:00 P. M. quitting whistle. A series of auto accidents followed the opening of the newly paved streets. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
