1918

W. E. Cornell sold a portion of his farm to the Louisville Real Estate and Development Company. A part of this tract had been platted as Mullaney's addition to the town. These lots and streets were declared vacated by ordinance no. 84.

The promoters divided their purchase into parcels to be sold at auction on May 1, 1918. The town's business houses closed their doors during this event. A procession led by the Cornet Band marched to the site. One lot was given to the holder of a lucky number, Miss Edna Elster. A lunch stand was operated on the grounds by Mrs. W. M. Allen's sewing unit for the benefit of the Red Gross. One hundred thirty seven dollars were realized for this organization.

This annexation, known as the Clarke Addition, is on the west side of Ossian. While great expectation was expressed by the purchasers that the town would spread in this direction, the lots never became residential sites. One dwelling, moved to this location, was later razed.

The city officials gaining office this year were: W. M. Allen, mayor; E. H. Anderson, treas.; J. E. Boyle, assessor; E. Frank, P. Wagner, Henry Johnson, W. E. Cornell and L. O. Lee, councilmen. Ed Grimstad was appointed marshal with a salary of $75 a month.

Treasurer Anderson released the town's financial statement showing: general fund receipts—$2994.01; disbursements--$2896.73, with $4665.33 in unpaid vouchers; waterworks fund receipts—$11848.61; disbursements—$11,572.79 with one unpaid voucher of $338.32. The total indebtedness of the municipality was listed as $29,003.65.

The graduates from O. H. S. in 1918 were: Clarence Johnson, Joyce Gilbert, Marcella Klein, Gleo Cahill and Fred Doane. Marie Beer, Cecelia Liebold, Raymond Beer and Jerome Beer graduated from the Parochial school.

The faculty hired for the public school for the coming year were: Gladys Jewell, superintendent; Marie Etteldorf, principal; Ethel Jenkin, domestic science; Loretto McGary, grammar; Lucille Beutel (replaced by Gerda Hanson), intermediate; and Minnie Christianson, primary.

Spanish influenza was sweeping the nation and became epidemic in Ossian this year. The Iowa board of health ruled that all cases must be reported to author-
