The editors of the Bee exploded in righteous wrath: "Swat the hospital good and hard! The people of Decorah will want the taxpayers to build them a air ship station next." (A prediction come true.) A tragedy occurred in Ossian on July 31, Ralph, the four year old son of Dr. and Mrs. Juen, was unintentionally drowned by older playmates. They poured water into the child's mouth while holding him on his back. Some of the liquid entered the boy's lungs, resulting in his death. The local Catholic Priest, Rev. C. B. Lechtenberg, passed away this same week. Over two thousand people, including fifty one priests, attended the funeral. Dr. M. J. Thiltgen was appointed to succeed Father Lectenberg at St. Francis Parish. The partnership of A. C. Heck and T. F. Schmitz was dissolved with Mr. Schmitz becoming the sole owner of the Ossian Bee. The paper was moved to the Lukenbill building just east of Britton's saloon—its present quarters today. The City Fathers passed ordinance no. 65. This act made all male residents, age 21 to 45, liable for a poll tax assessment of $3, or as an alternative, to contribute two days of labor on the streets. At a meeting of the stockholders of the Moe Mercantile Company, it was decided to change the firm's name to the Ossian Mercantile Company. The newly elected directors were: Peter Wolfs, A. C. Saboe, Ole Hauge, H. P. Nicholson and N. Moe. The owners of the Citizens Bank announced that cashier M. J. Klein has purchased a quarter interest in the firm. A fire, believed to be of incendiary origin, consumed the north end of the Milwaukee Road's stockyard early in the year. Since the Rock Island's (former B. Cr. & Northern) yard had been burned only two weeks earlier, this blaze too was believed to be of incendiary origin. Neighbors, who had complained for years about the odors emanating from these livestock operations, petitioned the town fathers to refuse to allow the rebuilding of these yards at their present location. The Milwaukee's carpentry crew immediately began construction of new holding pens at the same site. This action caused the council to adopt ordinance no. 69, regulating the building of stock holding pens within the corporation. It specified that any new construction must be paved with concrete and drains installed to permit flushing for sanitary conditions. The railroad's carpenters immediately ceased work and the Milwaukee management stated that they will not replace their pens in Ossian. Apparently a compromise was reached as the stockyards were eventually restored. The census of 1910 found that Ossian had gained 79 residents in the last decade. Military twp. did not fare as well—losing 73 people to a count of 1583. District Judge Hobson rendered a decision that the petition of consent, presented to his court requesting the continuation of licensed liquor sales in Winneshiek county, does not have the required number of valid signatures. The county went "dry" in September. Editor Schmitz suggested that the town's pump had better be put in good working order. Several wrestling matches were held at Bullard's Hall during the 1910 to 1916 period. Some of the publicized athletic contests were: John Staska vs Jones Tontz; John Riley vs Scrap Ole (Ole Tweeten); John Staska vs Young Beall; and Bob Vance vs Young Burlingham. The town's annual financial statement showed receipts of $3325.03 and disbursements of $2275.94, leaving a healthy balance of $1049.09 in the city's coffers. Kenefick & Olsen, in concert with the Ossian Bee, announced details of their contest for the "most popular young lady in Ossian." Votes may be obtained with purchases made at the drug store or with subscriptions to the Ossian Bee. A new Evelyn piano will be awarded to the Miss receiving the most votes. Emma Knudsvig won the contest with a total of 1,007,600 votes topping the other | |
