The census of Military township for 1875 lists 1539 residents. Of these, 674 born in Iowa, 588 in foreign countries and 269 were eligible to vote. The livestock census included: horses—718, mules--25, milch cows — 789,
slaughtered hogs— 2093, cattle--328 and sheep--1543. The products listed were:
butter—58140 lbs., cheese--200, wool--2401; they were valued at $180,130.
A scandal rocked the community this year. Dr. R. Small was accused of performing abortions on two Decorah women. The doctor was arrested and arraigned before
EsQ. Holcomb at Decorah. Bail was set at $500 and trial scheduled for May 1. The doctor denied the charges. Later, when one of the women passed away, Dr. Small was again taken into custody pending a coroner's inquest. We find no further account of
this case; nor do we find any later reference to Dr. Small in Ossian.
