Plan of distribution—5,04l numbers representing the certificates issued will be placed on the wheel, and 140 tickets inscribed with the names of prizes, will be placed in another. From these a number and a prize will be drawn simultaneously.

The drawing and award of prizes will be publicly made in Brook's Hall after the band concert. A sufficient warranty deed will be promptly made to the person who draws the grand prize.

For tickets and circulars, address A. H. Allen, lock-box 4, Ossian, Iowa.

F. M. ROWLEY, PROPRIETOR

We regret that no published reports were found on winners in this lottery. The next transaction involving this property (Schroeder apartments) was in August of 1872 —C. E. Brooks to Langbein & Bro. This forces us to speculate that either, insufficient tickets were sold to hold the drawings, or Brooks, the former owner, was the lucky winner. The latter possibility must have brought thoughts of collusion to the minds of some participants.

1871

The Republicans of Military Township held a caucus in August of 1871. A resolution was adopted to nominate G. L. Faust, Ossian's resident attorney, for the state house of representatives. P. H. Mills was caucus chairman and H. G. Burgess, secretary. The resolution was introduced by W. A. Stowell, and Dr. N. A. Drake, the other delegate to the county convention seconded it. Faust, Rowley and John Banning were selected as delegates for the ensuing year. We find no record that Mr. Faust's nomination was confirmed.

The following markets were listed for this year: hogs—$3, wheat—97¢, barley --50¢, old papers--3¢ a lb., and brooms--20¢ ea. Other published prices for 1871 included: doctor calls, either town or country—$1; calf leather boots, men's--$5 boy's—$2 to $4; and children's shoes—50¢ to 75¢.

1872

The Ossian business cards carried in the columns of the Decorah Republican during 1872 included: G. L. Faust, Attorney; H. A. Baker & Bro., A. Patterson & Bro. and G. Drake—merchants; James Hampson, furniture store; J. Kennedy, proprietor of the Ossian House; Charles Schultz, billiard hall; Dr. N. A. Drake, physician; and E. Pennington, justice of the peace.

The editor of the Republican praises Ossian as: "The market of the best district of Winneshiek County. There is no more lively town in northern Iowa. On pleasant days, the stores are thronged with people exchanging produce for green backs, and greenbacks for merchandise. If Ossian is not a Republican town, it is a reading town, and takes 150 of our papers."

Politicaly, Military appears to be about evenly divided between the two parties at this time. The presidential vote in 1872 was a standoff, with Grant and Greeley each receiving 87 votes. In later years, the town and township gave large majorities to the Democratic party; perhaps due in part to the influence of the Ossian Bee
