Dr. Drake purchased the practice of Dr. Cooley this year. He is now the only doctor in town. A Grant Club was organized in August of 1868, by Military Twp. Republicans. The following were at the meeting: J. L. Pennington, H. C. Burgess, M. Webster, Rev.J. Wedgewood, M. S. Rowley, R. Tinling, G. L. & J. M. Faust. Mr. G. L. Faust was elected president, Levi Freeman, treasurer and H. C. Burgess, sec'y. The following vice presidents were elected from each school district: J. L. Pennington, Ossian Independent; D. H. Brooks, dist. 1; John Neil, dist. 3; Rev. Wedgewood, dist.4; H. 0. Slaughter, dist. 5; Albert Sawyer, dist. 6; and Peter Schultz, dist. 7- A regular meeting of the Ossian Loyal Tanners Club elected the following as officers; M. S. Rowley, Captain; L. Freeman, 1st Lieutenant; Albert Sawyer, 2nd It.; D. A. Brooks, orderly. The secretary reported membership as 43. A committee composed of Jas. Henry, R. Tinling, Brooks, Freeman and J. M. Faust were appointed -.0 received and provide for a speaker. The stated purpose of the club was to elect leneral Grant to the office of president of the United States. THE MASONIC LODGE A Masonic Lodge, No. 19, A. F. & A. M., held their first meeting in Ossian on larch 23, 1868. The following officers were elected: Morrell Clark, W. M.; C. A. Harvey, S. W.; John Banning, J. W.; James Cameron, Treasurer; H. N. Harvey, S. D.; 5.. N. Sawyer, J. D.; Aaron Patterson, Sec'y; and J. M. Coykendall, Tyler. The group held meetings under dispensation for a period of fifteen months. It -•as chartered as Arcturus Lodge no. 237 on June 2, I869. The following men were the 31 charter members:
The membership of the Ossian Lodge reached a high of 59 in 1910. After that year, there was a gradual decline to only 20 members by 1962, when Lodge 237 consolidated with Brotherly Love Lodge no. 204 of Postville. The business houses of Ossian are recorded as of January of 1868. There are six :irms selling general merchandise: Rowley & Bro., Webster & Co., Freeman & Worley, Iramer & Pennington, Aaron Patterson and the Baker Brothers; Carl Eilers has a tinshop and handles hardware; Rowley & Bro. keep hardware and farm machinery; W. Stowe and Tom McMurtrie operate drug stores; Hodgkinson & Bro. keep a family grocery; Sweep & Meuser handle fine jewelry. There are three hotels: Daniels Bros, operate the Shasta House; James Kennedy keeps the Ossian House; and P. Wallace is proprietor of the Hilton House. In addition, the town boasts two blacksmith shops, a shoe shop, a harnessmaker, a wagon factory and a livery stable. There are presently six grain dealers; their combined purchases since September are 190,000 bu. of wheat, 13,000 :of corn, 21,000 of barley, 4000 of oats and 1610 dressed hogs. The Lynch lumberyard reports selling over 200,000 board feet of lumber plus six carloads of salt. The produce markets that fall were on the decline. They were listed as: wheat— 95¢ to $1.10; barley--$l..40 to 1.50; oats—30¢ corn—60¢; butter--26¢ to 35¢ for creamery butter; eggs—16¢; potatoes—75¢ and timothy—$1.50 to $2. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
