INITIAL EXPLANATORY REMARKS

Bailey and Mary's oldest son, Oscar, married Minnie White, daughter of B.
Monroe and Rebecca Painter White, in 1897. Their wedding photo above. Although we don't have a date
or wedding photo,
Rosella had married Stone Tweten, around the same
time. Oscar and Minnie had four children by 1905, Guilford, Granville, Merrill
and Grace. They would become the parents of two more. Stone and
Rose Tweten had three children, Marian, Myrtle, and Henry "Alton" at
the beginning of the diary and
Ruth was born soon in November 1905, completing that family.

Bailey and Mary with their first grandchildren. Bailey is holding Guilford

Tuesday, September 19, 1905--Nice day, cool. Bailey topped corn.
Wednesday, September 20, 1905--Nice day. Quite warm in the middle of the day.
Bailey cut up corn. In the afternoon I went to Mabel with Minnie and May Yingst.
I got
some sweet potatoes.

Thursday, September 21, 1905--Nice day. Quite a bit warmer. Bailey cut and
shocked corn. I did a lot of baking. I don’t feel good.
Friday, September 22, 1905--Nice day. Turned quite cool before night. Bailey
worked at his fodder and helped B. Haines fix the bell in the afternoon. May
Yingst and I
called on Margaret at her pa’s house. She expects to start home tomorrow.

Saturday, September 23, 1905--Nice day. Margaret started for Allison today. We went to M. Meeting in afternoon. Bailey set up some fodder and I called on Rose.
Sunday, September 24, 1905--Nice day. Quite warm. We went to SS and Meeting
in the forenoon and to Meeting in the afternoon. Oscar’s were here for dinner.
Monday, September 25, 1905--Very nice day. Bailey dug some potatoes. I went to
Flo Nelson’s to get my dress cut and made that Oscar and Minnie gave me. In the
afternoon I went to see Rose.
Tuesday, September 26, 1905--This morning we went to Oscar’s and filled a bed
and cot tick. In afternoon Bailey topped onions and went to cane mill and got
some
sorghum. Prof. Moeller took dinner here.
Wednesday, September 27, 1905--Nice day. Bailey finished cutting corn in North
lot. We went to Mabel. Took 6 bushel onions.
Thursday, September 28, 1905--Nice day. Bailey went to Meeting. He washed in
the morning and in afternoon set up the rest of fodder on North lot. He got
sick.
Friday, September 29, 1905--Nice day. Bailey dug some potatoes. He feels better
today. Rose and Anna Tweten spent the afternoon here. We had a nice time.
Saturday, September 30, 1905--Very warm, threatened rain in the afternoon.
Bailey gathered Rose 8 apples this forenoon and went to Mabel this afternoon for
Pike. I
went to Elling Wolds and picked out shoes for Mary and Myrtle Tweten.
Sunday, October 1, 1905--Nice day. We went to School and Meeting. Had good
ones. Went to Endeavor.
Monday, October 2, 1905--Nice day. Bailey hauled manure in forenoon and we
went to Burr Oak this afternoon. We took 12 doz. eggs, got 20 cts. per dozen. We
got a
pair of blankets, flannelette, for dress stuff to dress comforter-cot spread
cushion cover,
for the bottom of the cover, and 4 spools of thread. Harvey Golberg’s stack
burned today.
Tuesday, October 3, 1905--A lovely day. Bailey worked at potatoes most of the
time. I ironed and this afternoon went to Burt’s and got some tulip bulbs.
Wednesday, October 4, 1905--Nice, only very warm. Mercury up to 85 a. Bailey
finished digging and getting in our potatoes. I was at a Rag Bee at Rose
Tweten’s. There
were 37 women there. The rags were mostly sewed. The rags are for us.
Thursday, October 5, 1905--Nice day, some cooler. We went to Meeting. Had a
good one. I went to Union this p.m. Bailey made us a tulip bed today and we put
them
out, also some Narcissus and Crocuses.
Friday, October 6, 1905--Nice day. Bailey worked at hay for Oscar. Walter Halsey
and Rose and her children took dinner here. Rose & I worked at carpet rags.
Saturday, October 7, 1905--Nice day, except high wind. Bailey worked at hay till
noon. The wind got so high they had to quit. I churned and baked, mopped and did
several other things.
Sunday, October 8, 1905--Nice day, high wind from SE. We went to Meeting &
School. Had good ones. Then we went to Roe White’s for dinner. Had a pleasant
time.

Monday, October 9, 1905--Nice till evening, except high wind. It began to rain
after dark awhile. Turned quite cool in the middle of the afternoon. Rose and
children
were here today. We sewed carpet rags.
Tuesday, October 10, 1905--Nice in forenoon, quite cold in the afternoon. We
washed this forenoon and did not do much of anything this afternoon. Oscar and
Ruddie
got the cattle they bought at Stringtown home today.
Wednesday, October 11, 1905--Quite cool, frost that nipped vines of all kinds.
Spit snow several times today. The menfolks cleared out the Meeting-house yard
and the
women sewed rags at the parsonage for Mrs. Carter.
Thursday, October 12, 1905--Cold this morning. Ice formed on shallow water.
Got warmer in the middle of the day. We went to Meeting and this afternoon I
went to E.
Johnson’s to get my dress fitted by Flo Nelson.
Friday, October 13, 1905--Nice day. Bailey topped the rest of his onions.
Saturday, October 14, 1905--Rainy all day.
Sunday, October 15, 1905--Cloudy, misted some. We went to Meeting and School
and we took dinner at the Parsonage. Had a nice time.
Monday, October 16, 1905--Cloudy, misted some. We went to Mabel, got our
carpet warf. This is Oscar’s birthday.
Tuesday, October 17, 1905--Cloudy and rained some. Last night it rained hard.
We took dinner with Rose to help eat a roasted chicken.
Wednesday, October 18, 1905--Nice day. Clear and warm. Bailey fixed a chicken
pen and separated the pullets from the other chickens. I went to a rag B. at
Maggie Ried’s.
We got a big lot of rags sewed. Had a nice time, and then a lot of us went this
eve to sew
rags for Mrs. Carter, minister’s wife.
Thursday, October 19, 1905--Rained most all day, til 3 o’clock, then it turned
to
snow and this eve everything is white, with an inch or more of snow. Looks quite
wintry.
I cleaned the covey (cubby?) hole. Bailey pulled mangels till it got too bad.
Friday, October 20, 1905--Pleasant day. Snow melted quite a bit. We went to
Select Meeting. Had a good one. We churned today. Got over 5 lbs. of butter. We
got an
invitation to Burritt Haines and Amy Hiatt’s wedding today.

Saturday, October 21, 1905--We went to Monthly Meeting. Had a good one.
Sunday, October 22, 1905--We went to School and to Meeting and to Endeavor in
the evening. Had good ones, all of them.
Monday, October 23, 1905--Nice day. We cleaned house today. Mary Nelson
helped us. We cleaned 2 bedrooms and kitchen. Took up the carpets.
Tuesday, October 24, 1905--We washed this forenoon. Bailey worked at roots
some in afternoon. Nice day.
Wednesday, October 25, 1905--Nice day. We cleaned the sitting room today and
put our new carpet down. This eve we went to B. D. Haines’ wedding. Had a
pleasant
time. Got home about eleven. We went with Oscar’s.
Thursday, October 26, 1905--Rained some in afternoon. Bailey stripped some
husks and put a shelf in cellar for squashes. Burrie was here for dinner. Stone
got home
this eve.
Friday, October 27, 1905--Nice day. Bailey chored around the Meeting-house
most of the forenoon. In afternoon he went to Select Meeting. I did a big lot of
baking and
had three extra ones here for dinner, so I was too tired to go to Meeting. E. G.
Pearson
and Yingst staid here tonight.
Saturday, October 28, 1905--Nice day. We went to Quarterly Meeting. Had a
splendid sermon by a Mr. Knight. Ezra Pearson came here last night. He will stay
with us
while here. Mr. Knight and the singer stay at H. Carter’s. George Howe and E. G.
P. staid
here tonight.
Sunday, October 29, 1905--Cloudy and spit snow some. We dedicated our church
to the Lord today. Raised 500 dollars in the face of the meeting. Then we had a
splendid
sermon by Ezra Pearson. Andrew Shattock and family took dinner here.
Monday, October 30, 1905--Cloudy and threatening in the forenoon, but cleared
off nice this afternoon. Bailey got in most of his carrots today. Revival
meetings began in
our church last eve. Ezra started for home this morn. Mrs. Thomas died last
night. A big
sale today at Gay Casterton’s place.
Tuesday, October 31, 1905--Very high wind and chilly. Bailey got our Topsy and
Oscar’s Dan and got in our mangels and plowed west garden. I don’t feel good,
have
taken some cold. Andrew Shattock and family took dinner here today. The Singer
sleeps
here now.
Wednesday, November 1, 1905--Zero a. Nice clear day, not much wind. Quite
cold. This forenoon Bailey got in a little load of corn. This afternoon we went
to see
Elijah Johnson. He is quite sick.
Thursday, November 2, 1905--Not so much wind, sometimes, but plenty. Some
warmer. Bailey went to Meeting. I have taken cold and my lungs are sore and
pain me
some. Bailey went to Dr. Cady and got me some medicine and a plaster for my
lungs.
Friday, November 3, 1905--Pleasant day, only the wind is chilly. I am better but
cough a great deal. Bailey fixed his wagon box this forenoon for husking and
went to
Oscar’s this p.m. to pick up corn. Stone’s took dinner here. We had chicken pie.
I have
coughed nearly all the time since noon.
Saturday, November 4, 1905--Nice til toward evening, then it clouded up. Stone
and Rose have another girl, (Ruth) born between 10 and 11 o’clock today. Rose
was very
sick, is resting some now. We got a letter from John and Stella.
Sunday, November 5, 1905--Rained all day, til toward evening it snowed. I was
home all day, nearly sick. Bailey went to both day and evening Meeting, but few
out, but
good Meetings.
Monday, November 6, 1905--Cloudy, warmer, snow nearly gone. Quite muddy.
Bailey cleared off and plowed east garden. I went to see Rose this afternoon.
She is
getting along nicely. Mrs. Tweten stays with her. Anna Tweten is there this p.m.
for a
while.
Tuesday, November 7, 1905--Cloudy, spit snow some. The snow melted quite a
bit. Bailey chored around, went to Mabel, and took care of Meeting house and met
with
house committee. I have felt poorly all day.
Wednesday, November 8, 1905--Cloudy til toward evening, when the clouds
seemed like breaking away. Bailey washed a little and went to E. Johnson’s.
Thursday, November 9, 1905--Nice day. We went to Meeting. Had a good one.
Elijah is worse today.
Friday, November 10, 1905--Nice day. Bailey got in some corn. The Evangelist
and Singer and all of Mr. Carter’s folks and Miss Shaw were here for dinner. We
had a
nice time.
Saturday, November 11, 1905--A lovely day, clear and pleasant. Bailey went to
Mabel this forenoon and swept the church and got ready for Sunday this
afternoon. I went
to see Rose this afternoon. She is getting along nicely.
Sunday, November 12, 1905--A lovely day. We went to SS and eleven o’clock
Meeting, then to children’s Meeting at 3 and to evening Meeting. Mr. & Mrs.
White,
Ruddie and his wife, and Burritt Haines and his wife all took dinner here.

called on Rose a while. She is better.

Monday, November 13, 1905--Most of the day fine, but in the afternoon it
clouded up and is getting colder. Bailey fixed a crib and got a night.
Tuesday, November 14, 1905--High wind and very chilly, a raw, cold day. Clear
awhile, then cloudy. We did a big washing this forenoon, and Bailey got in a
nice load of
corn this afternoon. We both feel miserable. Bailey got us a sack of meal and of
graham.
Wednesday, November 15, 1905--Clear part of the day and cloudy part of the day.
Bailey put in corn and laid down his grapes.
Thursday, November 16, 1905--Nice day. Bailey and I went to Burr Oak. We took
10 doz. eggs. Got 22 cts. per doz. We got a granite roaster and Bailey got him
rubbers for
his felts and a few other things.
Friday, November 17, 1905--Nice day. Bailey hauled in fodder and I did a 2
weeks ironing. I am almost sick today. Quite warm.
Saturday, November 18, 1905--Nice day, quite warm. We went to M. Meeting. In
afternoon, Bailey went to Mabel. He got us sack of flour.
Sunday, November 19, 1905--Cloudy most of the time. We went to Meeting and
School.
Monday, November 20, 1905--Nice clear day. Bailey finished hauling in fodder,
and then plowed some on Dillingham’s lots. I cut out my dress. Called on Rose.
Tuesday, November 21, 1905--Nice day. Bailey plowed. I worked at my dress.
Minnie was here awhile.
Wednesday, November 22, 1905--Nice day, quite warm. Bailey finished plowing
lots north of Schoolhouse. I finished machine work on my dress. Stone is laid up
with
rheumatism, Mary with mumps, and Rose is about sick. The boy (Alton) has a bad cold.
Marie
don’t feel well. Myrtle is well.

Thursday, November 23, 1905--Mostly cloudy and began to rain between 3 and 4
o’clock. We went to Meeting. Then Bailey helped John Allen at Schoolhouse. I got
some
dust for chickens and cut currant cuttings. Got 1.00 sugar.
Friday, November 24, 1905--Rained last night and a while this morning. Snowed
a few minutes. In afternoon it cleared off. We churned.
Saturday, November 25, 1905--Nice day. Bailey hauled some wood home from
Beasley’s. In the afternoon we went to Mabel. The roads are very muddy. I got
some
kodol, a plaster, a little flannelette. Bailey got some sweet potatoes.
Sunday, November 26, 1905--Nice day. We went to Meeting at eleven. Had a
splendid sermon by our pastor, on a lost world, and God’s salvation. Bailey went
to SS at
2 o’clock and I went to Meeting at 3. Heard a good temperance sermon by the
Methodist
minister. Bailey went to Endeavor and evening Meeting. We took dinner at
Stone’s. Had
a pleasant time.
Monday, November 27, 1905--Stormy day, especially toward evening. Bailey
banked up the house and then picked up things that we did not want snowed under.
I am
poorly. Indigestion.
Tuesday, November 28, 1905--40 a. Cloudy all day. Rained lots last night. I was
sick all night, with sick headache, and have been poorly all day. So Bailey had
to be
housekeeper. Warmer. Rose was up to see me a while. Not froze yet.
Wednesday, November 29, 1905--Cold raw day, very bad to be out. The churches
had a Union Thanksgiving Service this eve. It was good. I did not go. I kept
Oscar’s little
ones.
Thursday, November 30, 1905--8 b. Clear cold day. Not very much wind. This is
Thanksgiving Day. Oscar’s and Stone’s were here today. We had a nice time.
Friday, December 1, 1905--15 a. Cold, cloudy, bleak day. We did not do much.
Bailey worked some fixing hen house. I am not well. This is Roe & Rebecca
White’s W.
anniversary. (29th)
Saturday, December 2, 1905--12 a. Cold raw day, quite a bit of wind. Snows by
spells. Bailey helped Oscar haul Pike a load of hay. Then he chored around home.

Carter and family went to Decorah today.
Sunday, December 3, 1905--Zero. Cold, quite a bit of wind. We went to Meeting
at eleven and to SS at 2 and staid for 3 o’clock Meeting.
Monday, December 4, 1905--5 a. Cold, bleak day. Not so much wind as
sometimes, but plenty. Bailey helped John Allen awhile this afternoon. Oscar was
here
awhile.
Tuesday, December 5, 1905--26 a. Nice pleasant day. We did a big washing this
forenoon, and this afternoon Bailey went to M. Oren’s to see Tom Bryant. I
called on M.
A. Newcomer a while.
Wednesday, December 6, 1905--A nice pleasant day. Oscar was here this
forenoon and this p.m. Bailey helped him haul a load of hay for our Pastor. I
called on
Rose. Did not go in. They have mumps.
Thursday, December 7, 1905--Nice day, very pleasant. We went to Meeting. In the
afternoon Bailey and Oscar hauled up a load of hay and straw for us. Minnie and
children
were here awhile. So was Sarah Newcomer.
Friday, December 8, 1905--Pleasant. Bailey worked at henhouse awhile, then
fixed his hay and picked up things generally. We looked at Mrs. Ried’s chickens.
Saturday, December 9, 1905--19 a. Clear cold day, lots of wind. Bailey moved our
hotel and he worked at that all the forenoon. This afternoon he worked at
Meetinghouse
mostly.
Sunday, December 10, 1905--7 a. Big wind from SW. Mercury going up fast, but
the wind is chilly. We went to Meeting this forenoon and Bailey went to SS, but
I have
headache.
Monday, December 11, 1905--19 a. A very nice warm day. Mercury got near 40 a.
Bailey took me to Plunkett’s awhile this forenoon to see Maggie & the children.
Mrs.
Plunkett is better. This afternoon he hauled 2 loads of fodder and went to
Oscar’s.
Tuesday, December 12, 1905--20 a. Pleasant day, some colder. Quite a wind after
early morning. Bailey hauled one load of straw, then he quit. He did not feel
well. His
teeth hurt him. I did some baking. Lulu & Erma were here this afternoon.
Wednesday, December 13, 1905--16 a. Nice day, some colder. Bailey has been
sick today with neuralgia in his face. His face is badly swollen. We made our
first batch
of hominy today.
Thursday, December 14, 1905--5 a. Some colder, but a beautiful day. Bailey has
been very poorly all day. He had a hard night last night. I had hoped the worst
was over,
but tonight he suffers much again.
Friday, December 15, 1905--10 a. A beautiful day. Bailey suffered a great deal
last
night and til just after dinner today, when it broke and run, and felt relieved
right away.
Now we hope he will soon be well.
Saturday, December 16, 1905--Very pleasant. Mercury got up to 40 a. Bailey feels
almost well, except weakness. I baked some bread. Called at Stone’s awhile.
Sunday, December 17, 1905--26 a. Nice day, only windy. We went to Meeting
and School. Oscar’s were here for dinner.
Monday, December 18, 1905--25 a. Cloudy all day, not much cold. We washed in
the forenoon and Bailey covered part of our strawberry patch with straw. I went
down
town and got 2 tablets and wrote to Amy Sherman and to Maher & Grosh and to
Jewel
Nursery Co.
Tuesday, December 19, 1905--A lovely day. Maggie and 2 of the children, Erma
and Ethel, were here today. We had a good visit with them. Bailey hauled some
wood.
Wednesday, December 20, 1905--26 a. Cloudy all day, wind east. Bailey helped
Beasley put wood in church cellar, and this afternoon we went to Mabel. Took
some
onions. Got a dollar per bushel. We got a souvenir from Granville Fawcett and
his Pard.
Thursday, December 21, 1905--Snowed some last night and all day today, so now
sleighs are running. Bailey worked awhile at henhouse.
Friday, December 22, 1905--14 a. Cloudy all day, looked some like clearing off.
Bailey worked at Meetinghouse most of this forenoon, and we went to M. Meeting
this
afternoon. Oscar & Stone butchered today, Oscar a beef and Stone a hog.
Saturday, December 23, 1905--2 a. Nice clear day, some colder. Bailey has been
to the church most of the day, helping about the C. tree. I was there awhile.
Alton Tweten
is quite poorly.
Sunday, December 24, 1905--Zero. Nice day. We went to Meeting in the forenoon
and to SS and Methodist Meeting in the afternoon.
Monday, December 25, 1905--Nice, clear, pleasant day. We went to Oscar’s for
Christmas dinner. Roe White’s and Ruddie White’s and the minister and wife and
little
girl and Mary & Myrtle Tweten & Josiah Casterton all were there. We had a very
pleasant
time. Stone & Rose thought their boy (Alton) too poorly to take out.
Tuesday, December 26, 1905--26 a. A lovely day. Melted some. Bailey made a
hog rack. I have sore throat.
Wednesday, December 27, 1905--22 a. A nice warm day. Bailey took our hog to
Mabel. He got 4.60 per hundred. I did some baking & called on Rose.
Thursday, December 28, 1905--26 a. Nice day, only it snowed all day and was
still
snowing this eve. We went to Meeting. Had a good one. We renewed our
subscription to
Endeavor World & Decorah Republican & Homestead.
Friday, December 29, 1905--16 a. Big wind all day, snow drifting badly. We did
not do much except chores. Sent an order to Maher & Grosh.
Saturday, December 30, 1905--Zero. Nice day. We prepared for Sunday. Stone is
looking at a farm.
Sunday, December 31, 1905--Zero. Nice day, clear and pleasant. We went to
eleven o’clock Meeting and Sunday School at 2 and Endeavor at half past six and
staid
for Methodist Meeting.
Monday, January 1, 1906--Zero. Wind east, then northeast. Cloudy pleasant day,
but looks like storming. This afternoon we called on Elijah Johnson’s & Roe
White’s. We
also called on Mrs. Plunkett. All are better.
Tuesday, January 2, 1906--20 a. Snowed all day. Bailey went to Mabel and got
Bennett & Mary Haines and we spent the rest of the day visiting. Had a nice
time.
Wednesday, January 3, 1906--25 a. Snowed all night and all day today. Oscar
came and got Bennett’s and us and we spent the day with them. Had a pleasant
day. Snow
is getting deep.
Thursday, January 4, 1906--20 a. Cleared off this afternoon. Some colder. Bailey
made paths and chored around. I don’t feel well.
Friday, January 5, 1906--16 a. A very blustery day. This afternoon is almost a
blizzard. The air is full of snow and drifting badly. I have been sick at my
stomach today.
Rose’s baby is sick. Oscar and Ruddie are both poorly today. Mr. and Mrs. Carter
went to
Decorah today.
Saturday, January 6, 1906--8 a. Nice day, only quite a bit of wind, but nothing
like
yesterday. Bailey was all about today, at home very little. I did quite a lot of
baking.
Mopped and ironed some. Am not well and am very tired.
Sunday, January 7, 1906--2 a. Nice overhead but bad getting around. Getting
colder, 2 below at dark. I did not go to SS or Meeting. Did not feel like
walking there the
way the roads are. C. Camp and family took dinner here.
Monday, January 8, 1906--28 b. A cold day, clear, not much wind. Bailey hauled
2 loads of wood. Roads are very bad. I don’t feel well.
Tuesday, January 9, 1906--Nice day, only big wind. Bailey went to Mabel to see
Dr. Cady. I have been poorly for a week or two and seem to get worse all the
time.
Bennett and Mary went to see Elijah Johnson today.
Wednesday, January 10, 1906--Nice day. Men had a wood hauling for
Meetinghouse and Parsonage. I feel better today.
Thursday, January 11, 1906--Cloudy, bleak day. I am not so well and feel very
lonely and somewhat discouraged. Meeting was here today. Bailey got some chicken
feed.
Friday, January 12, 1906--16 a. Mostly cloudy, wind east. Pleasant. C. Camp’s
and Bailey and I visited at Stone Tweten’s today. I have a bad cold. T. Humphrey
is
worse. Florence White is better. Bailey worked some at hen house.
Saturday, January 13, 1906--26 a. Pleasant but cloudy and snowed a little in the
afternoon. Bailey finished papering the inside of henhouse and got ready for
Sunday.
Sunday, January 14, 1906--26 a. Cloudy, dark day. Sleeted some. We went to SS
and Meeting. Had a good sermon. Gertie Johnson (it use to be) buried her last
child here
(in) our cemetery today.
Monday, January 15, 1906--28 a. Very dark stormy day. Wind east til in the
afternoon, then it turned to the NW. Big wind, not cold. The house committee met
today.
Bailey started money to Amy W. Sherman today.
Tuesday, January 16, 1906--5 a. Cleared off before noon and the wind quit
blowing so hard. We have quite a bit more snow and it is badly drifted. It is
nice this
evening. Mary T. staid here last night.
Wednesday, January 17, 1906--7 a. Stormy. Quite a blizzard for several hours,
then partly cleared off, but quite a stiff wind yet this eve, drifting badly.
Oscar visited
here today. We had a nice time together.
Thursday, January 18, 1906--11 a. Pleasant, mostly cloudy. Bailey shoveled snow

Carter to the train. He is going to Valton, Wis., for Quarterly Meeting. Pa took

White’s & Oscar Street’s visited with Ruddie and Florence White. We had a real
nice
time and a good dinner.
Saturday, February 3, 1906--High wind all last night and til after nine o’clock

morning, from SW. Getting warmer. We drove down to Roe White’s and E. Johnson’s
awhile, then came home and I did some baking.
Sunday, February 4, 1906--2 b. Quite a cold day, getting colder. We went to SS
and Meeting. Had good ones. Then we went to Stone’s for dinner and spent the
afternoon
there. Mrs. Tweten and Theodore was there.
Monday, February 5, 1906--24 b. Clear and nice, only cold. Not much wind. Our
mercury records 24 below; others all the way from 14 to 20 below. Bailey fixed
up his
sled and did odd jobs. I made lye hominy.
Tuesday, February 6, 1906--16 b. Cold day, clear, not much wind. We washed in
forenoon. In the afternoon he worked at the Wiles place. Oscar’s left their
children here while they went and fixed the papers making them land owners. They bought 40
acres of
land of G. R. Taber for 12 hundred dollars. Stone takes Pike’s place. We sold
our house
and one acre of land to Mrs. Richert for 500 dollars.

forenoon Bailey put a roof on shed at Wiles place. Stone’s children were here
awhile.

Friday, February 9, 1906--12 b. Cold day. Bennett & Mary staid til after dinner
today. They buried Olie’s remains today. Bailey went to the cemetery. I did not

cold. Mary Tweten staid here last night.
Saturday, February 10, 1906--23 b. Cold day. Last night seemed like the coldest
night we have had. Our mercury stood at 23 below this morning, but others stood
at from
14 to 19 below. Bailey and Harlan cut down a couple of trees at the churchyard
for fuel.

Saturday, February 24, 1906--26 a. Pleasant. Not quite as warm as for several
days
past. C. Camp’s staid here last night and til the middle of this afternoon. We
had a
pleasant visit, only I am so poorly. We got our deed from Amy Sherman today, and
gave
Mrs. Richert a deed to our house and about an acre of land, and Bailey and
Robert Mc.
fixed up the deed to the lots they traded. We expect to move next week, if well
enough,
and weather will permit.

today. Bailey went to Mabel this a.m. to get our incubator lamp fixed, then we

Men worked in timber this forenoon. Our cow got in the manger last night and she

planted potatoes this P.M. We took off nearly 100 chicks today. We now have about

little ones. Set the incubators today for the children. We got 24 chicks out of

Friday, May 11, 1906--Nice day, the warmest yet. Quite a wind. We went to Burr
Oak this forenoon and made some more garden this afternoon. We got a new spotted
granite wash basin, Bailey 2 shirts, sack of flour, oyster shells, ???.
Saturday, May 12, 1906--Big wind. Quite warm. We planted some more and
Bailey did several odd jobs. We let our little biddies out today. Found 7 mashed
in the
different coops. Rose was here a little while.
Sunday, May 13, 1906--Rained hard most all night and a little today. Cloudy all
day. We went to SS and Meeting. Bailey went to Norris Wilson’s funeral this
afternoon.
Monday, May 14, 1906--Clear part of the day. Between 3 & 4 o’clock we had a
big storm, rain, hail and terrible thunder & lightning. Lots of water fell and
the ground
was already soaked. Bailey hauled out some manure and dug some blackberry roots
before rain.

around most of forenoon. He hauled out some manure this afternoon. He raked his
nursery and harrowed his potato patch and dug some blackberries.

plowed and harrowed some patches and cleared off the corn stalks and burned them

Wednesday, May 23, 1906--Bailey finished putting out raspberry plants this
forenoon, and he put out a few strawberry plants and we put out a few early
cabbage
plants and planted our squash seed. Very close warm day. I have been poorly all
day.

went to Meeting. This afternoon Bailey cultivated the garden and I replanted

corn and Lima beans. Then it rained.

Bailey went to Mabel. He got me some stomach medicine. He cut dead wood out of

of the time very hard. Bailey plowed in the rain quite a while, the piece south

Wednesday, June 6, 1906--Very hot. Had a big rain. Some hail, and lots of
thunder & lightning. Big loud thunder about 4 o’clock, then at nearly night we
had a
tremendously big rain. Big wind and some hail and tremendous loud thunder, and a
cyclone struck Ed Torsen and tore down all his buildings and hurt one of his
boys badly
and it tore up all of G. Fawcett’s barn and outbuildings on his farm and many
others, also
timber. First day without making a fire in the heater.
Thursday, June 7, 1906--Clear nice day. The roads are about as hard as bricks.
We
went to Meeting and in the afternoon we went to see the destruction the cyclone
had
wrought, and it is awful. In the evening we went to commencement. It was good.
There
were 4 graduates, R. Newcomer, Nellie Roe, Geneva Rolfsus and Miss Halseth.

exercises. Called on Stone’s awhile. I have been poorly with indigestion.
Monday, June 11, 1906--Nice day, cool. Clouded up toward evening. Bailey
washed, then he & Alfred finished raking the strawberry bed. In afternoon he

corn, & Alfred went to help Rose. Josie & Alfred staid here last night & she all

about 5 o’clock. We got some butter of Minnie. Had our first 4 boxes of ripe
strawberries.
Tuesday, June 12, 1906--Nice day, not quite so cool. The ground is packed about
as hard as a board. Bailey and Alfred hoed our garden and hilled our potatoes.
Oscar
planted his yesterday. We had 4 more boxes of strawberries. Oscar put out his

plants, also raspberry plants today. Bailey got a stand of bees of Si Burt
today.

Stone’s today, and our men came down for dinner and supper. Alfred spent the

with us, and plastered some for them. Bailey mowed grass and cultivated his

for home today. They get home about 5 this p.m. We will be lonely without them.
Bailey
hauled home a jag of wood and cultivated some raspberry plants.
Sunday, September 9, 1906--Nice, only very warm. We went to SS and Meeting.
Bailey is not very well today.
Monday, September 10, 1906--Rainy awhile this morning, then cleared off with
high wind from SW. Bailey was sick last night, seems to be all right today. He
washed
and took off a case of nice honey.
Tuesday, September 11, 1906--Nice, only very hot til about 6 o’clock, when we
had a very hard rain. It came up very suddenly. Lots of electricity, some hail.
Bailey
pulled some onions and cleaned out the barn and hen house and sprayed with Lee’s
Lice
Killer for mites.
Wednesday, September 12, 1906--Rained last night and most of today, til
afternoon. Bailey went to Oscar’s this forenoon and he cleaned the mud off
Alfred’s
buggy and put more lice killer on the perches. Stone brought us a big pail full
of
tomatoes.
Thursday, September 13, 1906--Nice cool day. We went to Meeting. In afternoon
we went to Mabel. Took a few onions over. Got 65 & 75 cts. Got me a dress.
Friday, September 14, 1906--Quite cool. Big wind from SE. Bailey worked in the
mill at J. Mc’s. I baked bread and canned some plums and made some plum jelly.
This
afternoon I called on Kate and her mother and Harriet Taber and Fanny D. and
Mary
Cameron.
Saturday, September 15, 1906--Rained last night and some this forenoon. Bailey
worked this forenoon for John Mc. In afternoon he pulled onions. I went to
Newhouse
with Oscar’s. I got a new milk pail and small dishpan, 50 & 10 cts.
Sunday, September 16, 1906--Cloudy and rainy in forenoon. Very warm. Rained
very hard last night & lots of electricity. We went to SS and Meeting. Had good
ones.
Bailey went to Methodist Church.
Monday, September 17, 1906--Cloudy all day. Very warm. We washed in
forenoon and in the afternoon Bailey cut up corn. We churned today. Minnie and
children
were here awhile.
Tuesday, September 18, 1906--Cloudy all day. Very warm. Bailey cut more corn.
We called on Stone’s and Oscar’s & Bailey called on T. Bryant. I called on H.
Carter’s a
while.
Wednesday, September 19, 1906--Clear til toward evening, then it clouded up and
began to thunder. Bailey cut corn and I did a big ironing. Then we took a ride
and went to
Ruddie’s.
Thursday, September 20, 1906--Rained hard again last evening and all clear today. Bailey cut corn. This afternoon he and Oscar moved our cook
stove into
the dining room. We took a ride, took W. Darrington’s onions to them. We took
Mrs.
Ried and Painter’s wife some.
Friday, September 21, 1906--Nice most of the day. Rained a while this afternoon.
It rained some last night. Bailey worked at John Mc.’s today. I baked bread and
did
various things.
Saturday, September 22, 1906--Cool & cloudy, misted some. We went to Monthly
Meeting and this afternoon we went to Mabel and I called on Em Johnson after we
got
back. She has a cancer. B. Burrison has a very sick child.
Sunday, September 23, 1906--Cool and cloudy. We went to SS and Meeting. Had
good ones. Had a powerful sermon by our pastor, and a big crowd to listen to it.
Oscar’s
came here to dinner. Moeller and wife were here in the afternoon.
Monday, September 24, 1906--A nice day, clear and cool, except a while in the
middle of the day. I made some gell out of wild grapes, and picked some hops and
picked
and fried a chicken. Bailey finished cutting up corn.
Tuesday, September 25, 1906--Nice day. High wind from SW. Bailey got in the
rest of our onions and dug one row of potatoes.
Wednesday, September 26, 1906--Rained hard last night. Nice clear day, cooler.
We washed this forenoon, and Bailey went to Mabel this afternoon and got some
bran
and I went to a rag B. at Halsey’s.
Thursday, September 27, 1906--Nice day. We went to Meeting, then we and Mr.
White’s and Mrs. Tavener went to Oscar’s for dinner. Came home a little before 4
o’clock and found Rose here, and she and family were here for supper. Then we
went to
Prof. Moeller’s and spent the evening.
Friday, September 28, 1906--Nice part of the day, then threatened rain. Bailey
worked at John Mc.’s. I did a big ironing & kept Grace and Merrill. Oscar &
Minnie went
to La Crosse.
Saturday, September 29, 1906--Clear mostly. Bailey got some barley and plowed
some. I have been poorly all day, have eat nothing. I baked bread. Guilford and
Granville
staid here since school was out yesterday. Their folks will be home tonight.
Sunday, September 30, 1906--Nice cool day. We went to SS & Meeting. Had
another splendid sermon by our pastor. At home til Endeavor time.
Monday, October 1, 1906--A lovely day. Bailey hauled up a little jag of wood and
I went to the Prof. and got some Hyslop crabs to make sauce and sweet pickles.
Bailey
one more hops. (?) He worked for Oscar in his cane this p.m. I picked up some
apples.
Tuesday, October 2, 1906--A beautiful day. Bailey helped Oscar in his cane and I
visited at Rose Tweten’s. Their boy (Henry Alton Tweten) has whooping cough. I
had to
walk home to feed chickens.
Wednesday, October 3, 1906--Nice day, warmer. Bailey gathered some seed corn
and hauled some manure. I was sick all day with my stomach and pain in my side.
We
went for a ride this eve.
Thursday, October 4, 1906--Nice day, only very warm. We went to Meeting, then
Bailey hauled out more manure. I wrote to John. I am weak yet.
Friday, October 5, 1906--Bailey worked at John Mc.’s. I have been sick all day.
Some cooler. High wind from NW.
Saturday, October 6, 1906--I have been sick all day. Bailey worked about home.
Some warmer.
Sunday, October 7, 1906--We both were so poorly that we both stayed at home all
day. Felt better in evening.
Monday, October 8, 1906--Very high wind from NW. Quite cool. (We) are better
this eve. Dug some potatoes.
Tuesday, October 9, 1906--Cold cloudy day. Spit snow quite a bit. Ice formed on
water in a pail out by the well last night. Bailey finished getting in our
potatoes today,
except a few in the garden, and got in our squashes. I am better today. He also
got our
molasses home.
Wednesday, October 10, 1906--Still cold, northeast wind. Snowed a little last
night and spit snow about all day. We hear they have six inches of snow in
Dakota. Mary
was very sick today, but is better this eve. I hauled a few loads of manure and
finished
getting in garden stuff.
Thursday, October 11, 1906--Getting some warmer. Sun shone part of today.
Bailey worked in the house this forenoon and hauled up wood in the afternoon. I
am
much better today. L. Hiatt’s baby died. (I believe this was Russell, who died
August 1.)
Friday, October 12, 1906--Nice day, quite warm. Bailey worked at John Mc.’s
part of the day. I felt quite comfortable, and part of the day suffered quite a
bit. Some men
and the road grader spoiled our road.
Saturday, October 13, 1906--A beautiful day. Bailey picked up some corn at
Oscar’s, and I went along as far as Stone’s, and stopped at B. Burrison’s store
and got me
some winter shoes and woolen underwear. Paid 1.35 for shoes and 2 dollars per
suit for
underwear. Sold 5 dozen eggs at 20 cts. per doz. In afternoon we went to Mabel.
Got me
overshoes, paid 1.00. Got sack meal, 25 cts.; sack graham, 30 cts; sweet
potatoes, 25 cts.;
grapes, 25 cts.; medicine for me. Oscar & Ruddie went to see Nettie Mae Tavener
today.
Stone’s went to Decorah today. Had our windows cleaned today.
Sunday, October 14, 1906--Nice warm day. We went to SS and Meeting, but I got
very tired. I am so weak. Oscar’s 2 boys came home with us, to stay till their
folks get
home from Nettie May’s.
Monday, October 15, 1906--Cloudy, looks like rain. Bailey worked most of the
time on our place, pulling mangels and plowing some. I am better. Bailey sold 2
old
stoves. He got himself an undersuit.
Tuesday, October 16, 1906--A lovely day. Bailey got some ground ready to put
out trees and plants and he went to Mabel & took 2 sacks of onions. We were at
Stone’s a
few minutes and at Oscar’s awhile.
Wednesday, October 17, 1906--Mostly cloudy, looks like rain. Bailey helped
Oscar on his kitchen and I went along and visited. We had a pleasant time.
Thursday, October 18, 1906--Rained last night and a good part of today, but very
moderately. We washed and churned today and Bailey run over his accounts today,
or
part of them.
Friday, October 19, 1906--Lovely day, clear & warm. Bailey worked at John
Mc.’s. I went to Select Meeting and then called on F. Dillingham and H. Taber
and Kate
and her mother.
Saturday, October 20, 1906--Cloudy and threatened rain. We went to Monthly
Meeting and this afternoon we went to Mabel. Got 2 shirts for Bailey and several
notions,
among them a pen holder.
Sunday, October 21, 1906--Cloudy and rained during the night and for a while
this morning. We went to SS and Meeting. In afternoon we called on Oscar’s.
Monday, October 22, 1906--Cloudy and looks like rain. Bailey chored around this
forenoon and moved some plum & apple trees from this place up on our own place,
also
some currants.
Tuesday, October 23, 1906--Cloudy most of the day. Toward evening it began to
rain. This forenoon Bailey finished moving the currants that was on this place
and this
afternoon we went to Newhouse. We took 4 bushel of onions, 75 cts. Got Bailey
felt
shoes & rubbers and a cap.
Wednesday, October 24, 1906--Seemed like clearing off this a.m., but this
afternoon it clouded up and rained. I visited at Stone’s today. Pa grubbed out
some
raspberry bushes.
Thursday, October 25, 1906--Partly clear. Bailey took H. C. Carter’s to Mabel
this
morning to take the train for Quarterly Meeting at Sawyer. Then we went to
Meeting. In
the afternoon Bailed hauled some manure and I wrote 2 letters.
Friday, October 26, 1906--Cloudy most of the day. Rained quite a shower. Bailey
worked at John Mc.’s this forenoon and went uptown and to Will Welch’s this
afternoon.
I called at Harlan Carter’s awhile. Bailey had neuralgia some.
Saturday, October 27, 1906--Cloudy and blustery all day. Spit snow some. Bailey
got some ground feed and let Lorena Carter have Topsy this afternoon to go to
Mabel.
Kate went with her and Bailey went to Oscar’s. His neuralgia is bad today. I did
some
baking.
Sunday, October 28, 1906--Nice til toward evening. We went to Meeting, then
went to Oscar’s for dinner. Stone’s were there and Mr. and Mrs. White and Ruddie
and
Florence & her Pa. Had a pleasant time.
Monday, October 29, 1906--Cloudy and rainy all day and it snowed some last
night and a little today. Bailey’s neuralgia has been bad today & I have felt
miserable.
Mrs. H. C. Carter was here this afternoon.
Tuesday, October 30, 1906--Froze quite a bit last night. Nice clear day.
Everything looks so bright. Bailey is lots better. I hope he will soon be well
as ever. I feel
better today. Oscar is sick, too. (Sick headache.)
Wednesday, October 31, 1906--Clear and bright. Cold wind from SW. Froze the
hardest last night it has this fall. Bailey has not been so well again today. He
feels some
better this eve. I went to the store, got 2 handkerchiefs. Sent one to Eva and
got one for
Oscar. Sold one lb. of butter for 22 cts. Old Mrs. Meader was buried today.
Thursday, November 1, 1906--Clear til toward evening, then clouded up. Bailey
went to Dr. Haines this forenoon and got his gum lanced and now he is much
better. This
afternoon he got up some feed. I went to Meeting and called on Rose this
afternoon.
Friday, November 2, 1906--Mostly cloudy, warmer. Bailey plowed old raspberry
patch and potato patch today. He is about well. Looks like rain.
Saturday, November 3, 1906--Cloudy and threatening rain. Oscar’s came here this
morning and he and Pa took up and healed in a few strawberry plants, and this
afternoon
they all went to Oscar’s to haul in fodder. I am alone.
Sunday, November 4, 1906--Cloudy and looked like rain, but cleared off before
ten. Warm for this time of year. We went to School and Meeting. Called on
Stone’s
awhile this afternoon.
Monday, November 5, 1906--Mostly clear. Pleasant day. Bailey worked at Oscar’s
today and I visited at H. Carter’s and her and I looked over the cemetery.
Tuesday, November 6, 1906--Clear and warm til toward evening, then it clouded
up and sprinkled a little. We washed in forenoon. In the afternoon Bailey put
down Kate’s
grape vines and I mopped and did other things.
Wednesday, November 7, 1906--Cloudy and dark all day. Rained a little and
misted a good deal. This morning Bailey went to Oscar’s and then he worked some
up
home. This afternoon he moved some gooseberry bushes from Pete’s lot up to our
place.
We went and looked at Harlan Carter’s chickens. We think of getting a half dozen
of
them.
Thursday, November 8, 1906--Cloudy and dark all day. Real damp. We went to
Meeting. Had a good one. In afternoon Bailey took some grain to the mill & I
wrote to
Alfred.
Friday, November 9, 1906--Mostly cloudy. Some cooler. Bailey worked for John
Mc. Rose & children visited here today, and Stone was here for dinner.
Saturday, November 10, 1906--Partly clear a little while, then clouded up thick
and spit snow some. Getting colder. Bailey took some chickens to Mabel. He got 7
cts. a
lb. for them. They averaged about 40 cts. apiece. This afternoon he hauled up a
jag of
wood & fixed fence for chicken pen. I ironed & baked some. Sold 2 lbs. of
butter.

worked at chicken lot and house. We got 3 letters, from A.B.S., Eva and Bertie
Appleby.
Oscar was here awhile. So was Mary & Myrtle Tweten.

Ruddie White’s. Had a splendid time and a good dinner.
Monday, November 19, 1906--Nice day, only cold. Clear part of the time. Bailey
worked around home part of the time, or til noon. Then he worked at Oscar’s. I
was
poorly last night.
Tuesday, November 20, 1906--Cold and cloudy. Spit snow some. Bailey helped
Oscar on his cow barn. I went along, and he had to bring me home awhile, for Flo
Nelson
came to fix my dress. Then we went back and staid til eve.
Wednesday, November 21, 1906--Snowed all day and is still snowing this eve.
There is 5 or 6 inches of snow now. Bailey sold 3 of Oscar’s shoats to Will
Hutch for
fifteen dollars. Around home today.
Thursday, November 22, 1906--A beautiful day. We went to Meeting, and this
afternoon Bailey took 2 shoats to Mabel. They weighed 390 lbs. He got 5.55 per
lb. (?)
We sold our runt to Will Hutch for 3.00. We got our black chickens home from H.
C.
Carter’s. There will be 14 of them. Then we got some pullets of him for Rose &
Stone
paid 7 cts. per lb.

callers. It is bright moonlight tonight. Some of the folks had a wood B. for Ida

In forenoon Bailey fixed his wagon and settled up with B. Burrison and Lucy

Meeting and had exercises by some of the school children. It was good. Then
friends and
some others went to the Parsonage with our victuals and eat together. Had a nice

Friday, November 30, 1906--32 a. Nice part of the day. The roads are very muddy.
Bailey worked at John Mc.’s today. Mrs. White called here today. I am making me

out some. Bailey and Oscar hauled straw and I went along to Oscar’s. Minnie is

Ground thawed quite a bit. Bailey and Oscar hauled 2 loads of straw, one for us
and one
for Oscar. Then Oscar went to Ole Selnes’, took a swine, and Bailey hauled a jag
of wood
and got some more ground feed. We got a can of oil.
Wednesday, December 5, 1906--30 a. Sleeting all day and part of last night. The
trees are heavy laden with ice and the ground is slick as glass. Bailey around
home all
day. It did seem good to have him here in the house. We got a letter from John
today.
Thursday, December 6, 1906--20 a. Had almost a blizzard this forenoon. Cleared
off this afternoon. It is getting colder, only 5 a. this eve. Bailey worked
around home. It
seems good to have him around home. We did not go to Meeting, it was so stormy &
blustery. We got a letter from Alfred’s. We started orders for Endeavor World,
The
Strawberry & Commercial Poultry.

clouded up and has been a dark day. Bailey worked for John Mc. Oscar was here
awhile.

snaps and a
pumkin (sp) pie. I feel better than I did yesterday.

Monday, December 10, 1906--22 a. Dark cloudy day. Bailey went to old man Tals
(?) this forenoon and got a one-horse sled that he bought of him. This afternoon
he hauled
a load of wood. Roads are poor.
Tuesday, December 11, 1906--20 a. Some colder, wind south east. Bailey and
Oscar changed us over on their telephone line. The one Oscar is on, No. 12.We
have been
on No. 13. It took them nearly all day. I am not well.
Wednesday, December 12, 1906--27 a. Very dark cloudy day. Misted this
afternoon. Warmer. Mercury got above 32. We washed this forenoon. This afternoon
Bailey did odd jobs and I wrote to John & Maggie. Started John’s book back to
him.

time. Bailey worked around home, only he helped Oscar load a load of straw. I am

up a load of wood today, and we went to Mabel. We got some oyster shells and a
fountain
syringe. Pd. 1.50 for it. We got a few other things. I got Bailey a Christmas

good ones. Our quartette sang a song for us. It was fine.

Bailey made a wood rack this forenoon and got a load of wood this afternoon. I
don’t feel
good.
Tuesday, December 18, 1906--4 b. Cold morning, but is warming up. Wind has
got to the south again. Clear and bright. Bailey hauled up a load of wood this
forenoon
and went to see Mary Cameron this afternoon. Then he sawed wood. We got 50 cts.
worth of buckwheat flour today of Charley Nelson. Pd. 4 cts. a lb.
Wednesday, December 19, 1906--7 a. Pleasant day. Partly cloudy and quite a
wind. Bailey helped Oscar load some straw this forenoon and he and Oscar worked
in the
timber this afternoon, getting their wood chopped. Rose was here awhile. We
expect to
dine with them Christmas, if the day will permit.
Thursday, December 20, 1906--20 a. Cloudy and snowed quite a good part of the
day, but little snow fell, maybe an inch or two. Bailey did not do much, only
saw some
wood to do while he is away tomorrow & Sat.

little like clearing off this eve. Oscar’s were here a little while. Bailey

Bailey went to Mabel this forenoon. He got me a book for a Christmas present. I

him a woolen muffler. He has chored around home this p.m.

when it cleared off. We went to Stone’s today. Had a very pleasant time and
splendid
dinner. We got a box of C. presents from John & Maggie this morn & they are
nice. Rose
gave us a nice dish. Alfred & Josie sent us a nice Christmas card. So did
John’s. We have
been well remembered.
Wednesday, December 26, 1906--22 a. Mostly cloudy. Bailey took his sow to
Mabel. She brought about 15 dollars. He settled up with Dennis Wiles. We packed
a few
of our things today. I have not felt well today. We got 2 eggs today.

much except chores. A pleasant day. We went to Meeting. Had a good one. Oscar
butchered a beef and hog today. We got an egg today. Julia blacked my stove.

quite a bit. Bailey worked for John Mc. today. Oscar was here a while. I feel

Bailey worked at John Mc.’s today. I made a few calls. We got one egg. Oscar eat
dinner
here. He was helping Moeller move.
Sunday, December 30, 1906--30 a. A stormy day. Sleet and snow. We went to SS
and Meeting. Had a splendid review lesson and a good sermon by our pastor.
Monday, December 31, 1906--28 a. Pleasant. We moved out of Wiles’ house into
Mary Cameron’s house today. Oscar and Stone brought their teams and helped us,
and we
got Julia Rygg to help us too. I am almost sick.
Tuesday, January 1, 1907--30 a. Pleasant day. We went to a dinner at Oscar’s
today. We had a fine dinner and good time. Carter’s, White’s, Stone’s and we
were there.
I feel better.
Wednesday, January 2, 1907--32 a. Snowed some last night and has rained and
sleeted most of day today. Bailey got just a few more of our things over. It
rained too
much to be out much. I have felt real poorly today.
Thursday, January 3, 1907--16 a. Nice day. We went to Meeting. Bailey hauled a
load of wood and we did a small washing and churned. I am not well.
Friday, January 4, 1907--4 a. Some colder this morning. Getting warmer. High
wind from south. Bailey worked for John Mc. today. I ironed. I have suffered a
good deal
today. I wrote to Mary Haines and Eva Cather today.
Saturday, January 5, 1907--A lovely day. Clear, warm and bright. Bailey worked
for John Mc. today. Oscar called here and Rose was here about 2 hours. I feel
better.
Sunday, January 6, 1907--Cloudy and foggy & damp. We were to SS & Meeting.
They were small. We had a fine sermon. Oscar is sick with his stomach, and mine
is out
of fix, too.
Monday, January 7, 1907--28 a. Cloudy and foggy and misty all day. It did not
mist all the time. Dark. We washed, then Bailey went to Wiles’ place & got some
window
panes. Charley Nelson & Mary parted yesterday. It sleeted a big sleet last
night, so
everything has a heavy coat of ice.
Tuesday, January 8, 1907--28 a. Clear and bright. Getting colder all day. Bailey
has been moving our things that were in the cellar at Wiles’ place over here. A
big job.
Oscar ate dinner with us today. I feel better.
Wednesday, January 9, 1907--5 b. A beautiful winter day, clear and bright. Quite
cold for this winter. Got some warmer during the day. Everything is loaded down
with
ice. Bailey put on more storm windows and hauled a load of wood. We sent to
Decorah
by mail carrier for Lactipepsin. He got it in liquid form. I got two mottoes of
Myrtle
Halsey for 30 cts.
Thursday, January 10, 1907--21 a. Partly clean and partly cloudy. We went to
Meeting and Bailey fixed the windows of hen house some and cut wood and got a
load of
fodder, getting ready to be away tomorrow and next day. How I do dread to be
alone.
Friday, January 11, 1907--Cold and stormy. Bailey worked for John Mc.’s. I have
not suffered today as I did yesterday. Oscar was here awhile. He went to Alvin
Hawks’.
Saturday, January 12, 1907--9 a. Nice day, getting some cooler. Bailey worked
about 2 hours for John Mc., then came home. No more grain came in. I did some
baking,
and not very well.
Sunday, January 13, 1907--16 a. Cloudy and real damp. We went to School &
Meeting. Had a good sermon on gleaning. I have been poorly all day. Will Camp’s
and
Ruddie’s went to Oscar’s today.
Monday, January 14, 1907--9 a. Mostly cloudy, getting colder. Bailey cleaned the
Wiles’ house this forenoon and brought home the trunk and a few things. This
afternoon
we went to see Dr. Cady and get some medicine. I was real poorly last night. Did
not
sleep much & feel poorly today.
Tuesday, January 15, 1907--5 b. Clear some of the time and cloudy some. Bailey
hauled wood in the forenoon and some fodder this afternoon. I feel better today.
Wednesday, January 16, 1907--13 a. Cloudy, looks like storming. Bailey hauled
over more of our things this forenoon and this afternoon he has been working at
his
telephone line. I am better, but am weak.
Thursday, January 17, 1907--23 a. Thick cloudy. Bailey went to Mabel to
Farmer’s Institute. He put in our phone yesterday. I have been alone all day.
Oscar called in to get fruit.
Friday, January 18, 1907--32 a. Cloudy dark, looks like a storm. Bailey worked
at
John Mc.’s. I feel some better. I went to Select Meeting.
Saturday, January 19, 1907--35 a. A stormy day. Rained in the forenoon and
snowed in the afternoon. Bailey worked at John Mc.’s. I went to Monthly Meeting.
Mr.
White’s took me.
Sunday, January 20, 1907--7 b. Cold. A big wind last evening & last night was
almost a blizzard. Cleared off today before noon, but the wind blew pretty hard
til toward
evening it ceased blowing. We had no Meeting.
Monday, January 21, 1907--5 a. It is quite cold yet, but not so cold as
yesterday.
Bailey went to J. Mc.’s to work this morning, but some of their water pipes had
busted, so
they could not grind. He got home about 9 o’clock. Then we washed.
Tuesday, January 22, 1907--12 b. Very cold, but not so much wind as Sat. eve &
Sunday. Bailey sawed some wood at home today and fixed up fence gap on our
place. I
have been comfortable today. I ironed.
Wednesday, January 23, 1907--2 b. Cloudy. Spit snow some. Mercury went up to
10 a. today. Bailey hauled 2 loads of wood. I have not felt so comfortable
today. Several
men went to the hauling B., hauling wood for the Meetinghouse and for our
Pastor, H. C.
Carter. I have been piecing at a quilt today, a worsted one.
Thursday, January 24, 1907--5 a. Cold raw wind, getting colder. Bailey worked at
home sawing wood this forenoon and he helped Oscar haul wood in afternoon. I
walked
down to see Maggie Ried. She is more comfortable now. She had her leg broke six
inches
above the knee last Monday. She fell. Pa came after me & we drove out to J.
Mc.’s.
Friday, January 25, 1907--5 b. Cold today. 5 below at noon today, with a stiff
wind from north west. Bailey worked at J. Mc.’s today. It looks like storming. I
tolerable
comfortable.
Saturday, January 26, 1907--No entry.
Sunday, January 27, 1907--10 b. Quite cold. We went to Meeting and School.
Bailey gave quite a good talk on faith. Oscar’s came here for dinner. We had a
good sized
School.
Monday, January 28, 1907--10 b. Not very cold. Began snowing in the afternoon
some. Oscar had his wood sawed today. Pa helped, and I went along, although
about sick.
I had headache all night & could not eat breakfast, and my dinner today
disagreed with
me. Oscar had F. Johnson saw for him.
Tuesday, January 29, 1907--7 a. Stormed last night and all day today, so they
could not saw for Stone. There is several inches of snow now. I ate a little
breakfast, and
it soured, so I have had headache again. I am getting real weak.
Wednesday, January 30, 1907--16 b. Cold morning and clear, but soon began to
warm up, and this afternoon it was 9 a. and cloudy. They sawed at Stone’s today.
We did
not go. I did not feel able to go. Pa sawed and split a lot of wood and we each
wrote to
John & Maggie.
Thursday, January 31, 1907--25 a. Warm pleasant day. Sun shone a little while.
We went to Meeting and in the afternoon we went to Mabel. Took our turkey and
sold
him. He weighed 17 lbs. We got 11 cts. per lb. He brought 1.97 in cash. He was
hatched
the 29th of May, 1906.
Friday, February 1, 1907--Pleasant, only dark and damp cloudy. Bailey worked at
J. Mc.’s. Oscar took his turkey away today. I don’t feel as well as I did
yesterday.
Saturday, February 2, 1907--8 b. Cold blizzardy day. Bailey worked at John
Mc.’s. Oscar came this eve and shoveled the snow away from hen house door.
Sunday, February 3, 1907--21 b. Cold. Some wind. Clear. We went to Meeting &
School. Had good ones. I am taking cold, have been for a day or two. Don’t feel
very bad
yet.
