John married Lena Koppen and farmed near his home place for awhile, then near Canton, MN, until retiring to Harmony. Two sons, Raymond, a farmer and salesman; Irvin, pump business in Harmony; Mildred, a nurse; and Alice (Mrs. Elder Hoiness, Harmony).

Maggie - married to Henry Barth who was a brother of Jacob’s second wife Mary; they farmed in Hesper Twp. Henry loved to play horseshoe. Six sons and all farmed. Willard also had a tavern in Mabel, MN, and Frankie a carpenter. Willard (two wives - Viola Matter and Adeline Severide), Frankie (Bessie Bender), Arthur (Anna Vick), Walter (Wilma Darrington), Raymond (Myrtle Bender), who farmed his home place, and Howard (Leila Itse), after farming for awhile, moved to Illinois, in the monument business. Lyle Barth, Raymond’s son, succeeded his father on the farm.

Dick Young married Alberta Larson (name in Norway was Jamerdal). Dick’s real name was “Diebold.” Alberta was an aunt of L.C. Bolson who married Violet Young. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Young farmed on the Koppen Place on the Middle Hesper Rd., and then on the Canoe Ridge Rd. Arthur, the oldest son, married Olga Haga. Harry fell in a basin of hot water and died. Marguerite became Mrs. Spencer Haga. Milton married Arleen Fadness. All were farmers. Before retiring, Arthur was custodian at the Decorah West Side School and lived at 210 Iowa Avenue. Milton worked at K & S Super Value. Arleen, an accomplished violinist, played with other musicians who were in much demand as entertainers.

Phillip married Clara Barth and farmed between Alfred Young and Henry Barth’s farm. One son and four daughters: Leila (m. Stanley Matter), Lester (Helen Blagen), Laverne (m. Cyrus Nordsving), Edna (m. Lloyd Gjere), lone (m. Dean Price), all lived on farms. After moving to town, Lloyd Gjere drove the school bus for North Winneshiek and Decorah Schools.

The Young (Jung) family in Winneshiek Co., IA began with the arrival of Jacob ’Jake” Jung who came from Alsace, France about 1880. He was the first and eldest son of a family of 7 children to seek a new life in America from a war torn land. Jacob worked for about 2 years in the Locust, Pleasant Twp. area and sent money back to his parents so that his parents, brothers, and sister could come to America also. They arrived about 1882. Jacob’s first marriage was to Katherine Pfister 10 May 1887. Jacob bought his father-in-law, Phillip Pfister’s farm just east of Locust. Jacob and Katherine had two children, Emma and Alfred. Katherine died 28 Jul 1898 at the age of 41. Jacob’s second marriage was to Mary Barth 17 Dec 1902. To this marriage Jacob had 6 more children: Lydia, Clara, Amelia, Lenna, Roy, and Julia. the age of 72. Mary died 23 Jul 1956. They are buried at the Locust Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Alfred Jacob Young was born 21 Jan 1890 in Pleasant Twp. Alfred married Emma Grindeland 5 Mar 1913 and bought a farm in Hesper Twp. Emma was born 20 Oct 1891 in Highland Twp., the daughter of Willie Olaf Colbeinson and Sophia Grindeland. Alfred and Emma had two children, Evelyn and Jesse. Emma died 24 Jul 1924 at the age of 32. Alfred died on 13 Sep 1975. They are buried at the Locust Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Jesse Willet Alfred Young was born 29 Aug 1918 on his father's farm. Jesse was raised on that farm, farmed it, and still resides there. Jesse married LaVonne Winnefred Safford on 14 Feb 1942. LaVonne was born in Fremont Twp., the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Entsminger) Safford. Jesse and LaVonne had four children: Robert, Emma, Phillip, and Willet.

1) Robert Jesse Young was born in Hesper Twp., and married Sandra Brainard 23 Aug 1969. Sandra was born in Waukon, IA, the daughter of Adelbert and Nellie Brainard. They farmed in Hesper Twp. and had three children: Bobbie Kay, Ronald, and Nancy. Robert died 8 Dec 1976 and is buried at the Locust Lutheran Church cemetery. Sandra remarried to Vern Gavle and farms near Sattre. Bobbie Kay Young married Jamie Anderson 3 Jun 1989. They have 2 children: Robert and Jesse. Ronald Jesse Young, married Angela Smith 26 Aug 1995. Nancy Lou Young was born.
