Earl "Whitey" White was born 12 Dec 1895 in West Union, IA, the son of Elmer and Cora White. Whitey’s siblings were: Gladys (Woods), Hazel (Kipp), Anna (Fortney) and Charles. Whitey died of cancer May 1963 and is buried in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah.

Mabel White

Mabel “Mabe” (Thornton) White was born 11 Jun 1904 in Clayton Co., IA. Her parents were William Orlando and Jane (Gordanier) Thornton who are both buried in Phelps Cemetery. Mabe’s siblings were: Bessie (m. Andy Kessel), Eva (m. Elmer Holt), Roy (m. Josie Pederson), Andrew (m. Pearl Ruth), Gladys (m. John Ammondson), Richard (m. Lorna Dundee) and Dorothy (m. Jim Reitenour).

Whitey and Mabe were married 27 Dec 1926 in Decorah. Whitey was a veteran of the Canadian Army. He enlisted in 1917 and was stationed overseas for 2 years. He was a German prisoner of war when the Armistice was signed. Whitey worked for the Coca-Cola Co. in Decorah. He was a member of the volunteer fire department and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mabe started “Mabe's Pizza” in the 1950's in a small building on the corner of College and Leif Erickson Drives. After a few years she moved to West Water Street across from Vesterheim Museum. When that building burned, Mabe and her son, Donnie, built a new building at their present location at 110 East Water Street. Mabe is an active member of the Methodist Church and the Rebekah

Lodge. She travels often, crochets endlessly and is a whiz at cards and crossword puzzles.

Whitey and Mabe’s children are: Ervin (m. Donna Erogan, 1 son), Gerald (m. Darlene Benson, 3 children), Richard (m. Shirley Thousand, 1 daughter; divorced, m. Marie Sue Stratmas, 3 children) and Donald (m. Marion ‘‘Mamie’’ Ott, 5 children).

Henry Winters White was born 21 Feb 1831 in Canada to Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Winter) White. Nathaniel was born 26 Jun 1796 and Elizabeth was born 14 Jan 1788 in Lancaster, PA. Henry’s brothers and sisters were: Winters, Ann, David and Nancy. Henry married his second wife Amanda Jane (Christman) Baumwart who was born 22 Dec 1833 in Tonawanda, NY This was Amanda’s second marriage as well. (See Henry Baumwart family history.)

Henry and Amanda were married 9 Apr 1870 at the Winneshiek House in Decorah, IA. They had one child Robert Everett born 22 Apr 1871 in Vernon, IA. Robert married Mary Katrina Einwalter 12 Mar 1894 in Winneshiek Co. Their children were: Margaret, Robert, Grant, Lester and Richard Charles. Richard Charles, fifth child to Robert and Mary, was born 26 Oct 1914 in Walker, IA. He married Ruby Laurel Hodson 3 Nov 1945 in Ackworth, IA. Their children are: Geoffrey Thomas and Richard Everett. Geoffrey Thomas, first child to Richard and Ruby, was born in Waukon, IA. He married Vicki Ann Poindexter 9 Jun 1968 in Indianola, IA. They have one child Cindy. Richard Everett, second child to Richard and Ruby, was born in Indianola. He married Martha Ellen Bailey 19 May 1979. Their children are: Sarah Ellen, Ellen Bailey and Grant Richard. Richard and Ruby are retired and live in Indianola. Robert died 3 Feb 1949 and is buried in Tipton, IA. Mary died 7 May 1960 in Cedar Rapids, IA and is also buried in Tipton.

Henry and Amanda were divorced around 1876. Henry took his nine children from his previous marriage and moved to Canistota. Amanda kept her five remaining children (one died) and they continued to live around Ossian and West Union.

Henry died 1 Aug 1907 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery. Amanda died 2 Jan 1897 in West Union and is buried in Centennial Cemetery near Ossian, IA.
