born in Cleveland on 21 Apr 1919. They were married on 8 Sep 1951 in Cleveland. Chris was the oldest of five children. Her siblings were: Charlene Marie, James Charles, Connie Jean and Jean Marie. As of 1995, Christine Ann was single.

Christine Ann obtained her Bachelor of Science in Education from Bowling Green State University in 1973, a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon in 1984 and an Educational Specialist from the University of Wyoming in 1991. She spent eighteen years as an elementary teacher prior to her acceptance of an elementary principalship in Decorah, IA in 1994. Her responsibilities included both the East Side and West Side Elementary Schools, the gifted and talented program, Title 1 and various other committee work.

Christine, in all her public and private life, has the reputation of an honest and dependable person. She is a person of strong Christian convictions.

Recently, Christine purchased a home off Locust Road. She plays the violin and enjoys music and the Arts thoroughly. She remains close to her family, even though they are now only twelve hours away!

Stee, Harlan and Hazel (Tatro)

Harlan Adrian Stee, Sr. was born 14 Apr 1910 2 miles west of Castalia, Winneshiek Co. His parents were Melvin H.M. and Ellen (Hegland) Stee. He was christened at the Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, IA. Melvin H. Stee was born 13 Feb 1876. He farmed and later served as rural mail carrier for Castalia for many years. Ellen Hegland was born 15 Jul 1875.

Harlan learned farming from his father. He attended rural school and graduated from the 10th grade at Castalia High School. He then attended Postville High School where he graduated in 1929. He served in the U.S. Army for 3 years during World War II. He served in the European operation in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

On 15 Nov 1941 he married Hazel Lenore Tatro at West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, Fayette Co., IA. Hazel was born 1 Jul 1914 at Clermont. Her parents were Roy Russel Tatro (b. 26 Sep 1880) and Bertha Marie Anderson (b. 7 Jul 1881). Hazel graduated from Clermont High School in 1932.

Harlan A. Stee, Sr. worked for the Rock Island Railroad. Then he was a carpenter for 16 years. For 26 years he worked for the Winneshiek Co. Highway Dept. Harlan was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Helof/ Holm Post #1977 beginning in 1952. Hazel is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. As a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, Harlan served on the church council and taught Sunday School for many years. Hazel has taught Sunday School and served as an officer in the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA) organization. Harlan served as city clerk for the town of Castalia for 30 years. He was also township clerk for 20 years, township assessor and served on the Board of Education when Castalia had a school. Harlan and Hazel were both active in the

Bloomfield Twp. Historical Society and Kew’s (the Senior Citizen Club of Castalia).

Harlan and Hazel had 2 children: Ellen Marie and Harlan Adrian Stee, Jr.. Both children were born in Postville, IA. Harlan. Jr. married Ann Lizabeth Christofferson on 30 Mar 1968 at Postville Presbyterian Church, Postville, IA. Ann was was the daughter of Harold and Gladys (Munger) Christofferson. Harlan, Jr. and Ann have 2 children: Kristin and Greg. Both children were born in Cedar Rapids, IA. Kristin has a son, Cory Robert. She is married to Barry Schwartz. They live in Arkansas. Greg married Tresithney Taylor on 11 Aug 1990 in Burlington, IA. They have 2 children: Jerad Adrian and Alyssa Cheryl. The family lives in Utah.

Harlan Stee, Sr. died 18 Feb 1990 at the Good Samaritan Home, Postville (Allamakee Co.). He was buried at Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia.

Stee, Melvin and Ellen (Hegland)

Melvin H. Stee, son of Norwegian immigrant parents Halvor A. and Marguerite (Danielson) Stee, was born 13 Feb 1876 north of Freeport, Winneshiek Co. He started school at the old Drake school. The family moved to a farm east of Ossian about 1888 and Melvin then attended the old Ossian school for several terms.

On 17 Oct 1900 Melvin married Ellen M. Hegland, daughter of immigrant parents Ole and Cecil (Knudtsen) Hegland. Six children were born to this union: Herbert O., Clifford M., Merle E., AnnaG. (m. E.H. Engelhardt), Harlan A. and Morton A.

Melvin farmed in the Castalia and Ossian area for many years. While farming he and his brother, Arthur owned and operated a steam threshing rig. In 1918 Melvin started carrying mail out of Castalia on Route No. 1. His route covered 32 miles and the mail went through regardless
