Powers, Bartholomew Thomas (Brother Herbert Adrian, FSC)

Bartholomew Thomas Powers was born 1 Apr 1917 in Ossian, IA, the 7th child of Edward and Bertha (Hangartner) Powers. He graduated in 1934 from De Sales Catholic High School in Ossian. After graduation Bart worked on a C.C.C. Project for youth in the Volga River area of Fayette Co. He met a priest there and confided his wish to become a teacher and priest. Bart was encouraged to visit De LaSalle in St. Louis, MO where the Christian Brothers had a school. After a month's visit Bart decided he wanted to become a Christian Brother. He entered Novitiate 6 Jun 1939; Reception of Habit 30 Aug 1939; First Vows 31 Aug 1940; and Perpetual Vows 14 Aug 1945. He received a B.S. degree from St. Mary’s in Winona, MN and his M.A. degree from DePaul University in Chicago, IL.

As Brother Herbert Adrian he taught social studies and religion. He became a principal in 1958 and a superintendent in his chosen field. He supervised the opening of the Walnut Grove location of the Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, TN in 1965. He continued as superintendent there until he retired in 1987.

Although retired Brother Adrian continued to be active in the Christian Brothers, having spent 55 years in his commitment to Catholic Education. On 14 May 1994 the Christian Brothers University bestowed the degree of Doctor of Pedagogy (teaching) on Brother Adrian. He continues to live in Memphis.

Powers, Edward and Bertha (Hangartner)

Edward Matthew Powers was born 18 Oct 1869. He married Bertha Hangartner 27 Jan 1903 at Ossian, IA. Edward died in 1917. Bertha worked very hard to support her family alone. She sold her small farm near Ossian and bought a home on the south edge of town. She raised a large garden, took in laundry and did other jobs, keeping her family of 7 children, ages 8 months to 13 years, together. Bertha continued to live in the same house until she died of cancer in 1941.

Bertha and Edward's 7 children were: Ruby Mary (b. 8 May 1904); Nellie (b. 25 Oct 1905); Catherine Joan (b. 7 Sep 1907); Joseph Harold (b. 3 Dec 1909); Elizabeth Jean (b. 30 Jan 1912); Ann Marie (b. 27 Aug 1914); and Bartholomew Thomas (b. 1 Apr 1917).

Powers, James and Ellen (Lardner)

James Powers was born in Ireland 26 Jan 1841. Ellen Lardner was born in 1851 at Lockport, NY James and Ellen were married in 1866 and had 2 children: Edward and Catherine.

Edward (b. 18 Oct 1869) married Bertha Hangartner 27 Jan 1903 in Ossian, IA. They had 7 children: Ruby (m. Murphy); Nellie (m. Horan); Catherine (m. Bray); Joseph; Elizabeth (m. Becker); Ann (m. Hoisington); and

Bartholomew. Catherine married Robert McKernan. She died in 1931. Catherine and Robert had 7 children: Joseph; Mary (m. McCulloch); Ambrose, died 22 Aug 1975; Helen (m. Looney); Monica; Margaret; and Charles.

Powers, Joseph and Hilda (Zweibohmer)

Joseph Harold Powers was born 3 Dec 1909, the 4th child of Bertha and Edward Powers. He grew up in Ossian, IA and married Hilda Zweibohmer at Stephen’s Church, Plymouth Rock, IA 30 Apr 1934. Hilda was born 22 Nov 1911. Joseph worked at the quarry near Ossian and then worked at the elevator until 1947. The family moved to Monticello, IA where Joe farmed and later worked for Franklin Manufacturing until retirement in 1974. Joe died 1 Jun 1975. Hilda continues to live in Monticello.

Joe and Hilda had 5 children: Fred, Colleen, Cloy, Clayton and Aletha. Fred Edward married Patricia Dunne, They live at Bennett, IA and have 4 children. Colleen Mary married Delbert Weber. They live at Monticello and had 6 children. Clov Leonard and Clayton Joseph are twins. Cloy married Marilyn Sagmeister. They live in Chicago, IL and have 5 children. Clavton Joseph married Francis Rose Dinino. They live in Clifton, NJ and have 3 children including an adopted Korean boy. Aletha Catherine mar-ried Norbert P Panek. They had 5 children. Aletha lives in Marion, IA.

Debra Cline was born at Decorah, IA to Robert T and Vernetta (Bolson) Cline. She was baptized at Decorah Lutheran Church 16 Dec 1951 by Pastor I. M. Gjellstad. Her sponsors were her uncles and aunts, Ransome and Constance Bolson and Harry Leslie and Marlys Cline. Debra was confirmed 24 Sep 1967 by Pastor Alden Hovda. She attended the Clay Hill rural school, West and East Side schools and Junior and Senior High
