Gustava (Erickson) Moore

John Lewis (b. 1877) married Martha Persse in 1901 in Decorah and lived there. John Lewis was a rural mail carrier in the Decorah area. John and Martha had 5 children: Emma, Charles, Violet, Richard and Betty Moore.

Donald E. Moore was born 22 Feb 1921 at Decorah, IA. He graduated from Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1945.

On 21 Apr 1946 Donald married llene A. Meyer at Latimer, IA. llene graduated from Iowa State University in 1944. She was Winneshiek Co. Home Economist from 1945 to 1947.

Donald and llene are the parents of five children: Elizabeth A., David S., Martha A., Janet K., and Donald M. (d. 23 Feb 1954). Elizabeth (ISU ’69) married Dan Porter (ISU ’69). They live in Leon, IA. Liz is a lecturer, writer, fabric designer and producer of videos on quilting. Dan is a bank vice president. Dan and Liz have three children: Katie (Yale ’96), Jacob (US Naval Academy ’98), and Emily at home in school. David (ISU ’78) married Nancy Poss (U of MN ’92). David and Nancy live in Edina, MN. David is a senior principal information technology engineer at Alliant Techsystems. Nancy is an entrepreneur. Martha (U of IA 78) married Kurt Aschim (U of IA 79). They live in Marinette, Wl. Martha is a nurse and a volunteer. Kurt is a family dentist. Kurt and Martha have three children: Ellen, Annie, and Hans - all living at home and attending school. Janet (U of IA ’80) married Greg Evans (ISU 78 and U of I ’80). They live in Scottsdale, AZ. Janet is a nurse practitioner. Greg is an insurance representative. They have two children: Natalie and Scott - both at home and attending school.

Donald practiced veterinary medicine with the Decorah Veterinary Clinic along with Drs. Robert N. Overland (ISU ’52), Rulan C. Hansen (ISU ’57), and Gordon Gelo (ISU 76). He retired from the practice of veterinary medicine in 1977. Donald and llene then ran the Ben Franklin Store in Decorah for fifteen years.

Donald is a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medicine Association, the American Veterinary Medicine Association, and the Security Bank and Trust board of directors.

Donald and llene have lived in Decorah for fifty years. They are members of the First Lutheran Church where Donald has served on the church council. Donald belongs to the Masons, Shrine, and Elks. He also belongs to Decorah Betterment Association and the Decorah Chamber of Commerce. Donald also served on the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital Board, S.C.O.R.E., Winneshiek County Unit of the American Cancer Society and the Iowa Unit of the American Cancer Society board of directors. He helped produce the video “Cancer Facts for Men and the Women Who Love Them" and is an educator and presenter at continuing education seminars on cancer to both professional and lay people. Donald was chosen the 1994 Outstanding Volunteer of the American Cancer Society of Iowa.

George F. Moore, son of James F. and Golden Moore, was born 28 Sep 1849 in Wisconsin. James F was the eldest son of James R. and Lucia (Morse) Moore of Decorah. James F had 3 brothers and 2 sisters: Amanda Malvina, William W., Robert B., Isabelle Marian and Charles O. (See Charles 0. Moore history.) James F was born in NY and ran for sheriff in 1851 in the first election held in Winneshiek Co. He was defeated and served as deputy sheriff until 1853 when he was elected sheriff.
