the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. Alice is the granddaughter of Conrad Riehle, the fifth German settler of Spillville. She was born 3 Feb 1908 in Winneshiek Co, and also attended St. Wenceslaus School. James and Alice graduated from the eighth grade in the year 1923.

James and Alice became the parents of 8 children: Alice married Joseph Barloon; James married Marian Kuennen; Arthur married Dorothy Flaherty and after a divorce married Jeanne Mackenburg; Robert married Helen Kuennen; Gerald remained single; Richard married Rebecca Poshusta; Joanne married Ken Hageman; and Rita married Roger Fjelstul. All the children were baptized, received their first Holy Communion, were Confirmed, and all three daughters were married in the St. Wenceslaus Church. Alice A. and Joseph R. Barloon were the first couple to have their wedding reception in the new St. Wenceslaus School Gym which was built in 1953.

James and Alice farmed the family farm which has been in the Kuhn family since 1890 doing general farming of livestock and crops. The farm is located in Winneshiek Co, Sumner Twp, Section 34. James bought the farm in 1944 from his parents. In 1978, James sold the farm to his sons, Gerald and Richard. Besides farming, James also shredded fodder for himself and his neighbors, threshed oats, filled silos, baled hay and straw, shelled corn around a large territory for several years. Alice busied herself with general housework, the family, crocheting, sewing, gardening and choring around the family farm.

James belonged to the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus. Both belonged to the Catholic Workman. Alice belongs to the Rosary Society, St. Wenceslaus Guild and Funeral Circle. James and Alice celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1981 at which time they had 26 grandchildren.

James A. Kuhn lived all his life on the family farm and passed away 7 Aug 1983 at the age of 75. He is buried in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville. Alice still lives on the farm with her son Gerald in a mobile home. Richard and his family live in the house on the farm.

Kuhn, Joseph P. and Mary (Mikota)

Joseph Kuhn, son of George and Josephine (Novotny) Kuhn, married Mary Ludwig, daughter of John and Mary (Mikota) Ludwig, 22 Jul 1890 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA. Joseph and Mary grew up and attended school in Winneshiek Co. They bought a farm in 1890 which was located in Winneshiek Co, Sumner Twp, Section 34. In 1908 they built a new home on their farm. Along with general farming of livestock in early days, J.R as he was known, was a Winneshiek Co supervisor from 1914 to 1920. J.P also belonged to the threshing crew that covered a large area. Mary did general housework, family sewing, gardening, and chores around the family farm.

The Kuhn family attended St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville. Their 8 children attended St. Wenceslaus School.

Joseph and Mary belonged to a number of church organizations, such as Kotolicky Delnik (K.D.), Catholic Workman, St. Anne's Society, and the Rosary Society, holding a number of offices during the years. Their children were all baptized, received their First Communion and were Confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Church. All three girls were married at St. Wenceslaus Church.

In 1937, when Joseph and Mary moved to Spillville, their son James and his wife Alice rented the family farm which they purchased in 1944.

Joseph P and Mary celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in 1946 at the family farm. In 1947, they had 35 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mary died 22 Mar 1947 at the age of 82. Joseph P died 15 Jul 1949 at the age of 82.

The eight children of Joseph P and Mary Kuhn were: Joseph P Jr. married Anna Soukup; Frank married Otillia Soukup; Alois married Magdalene Martinek; Will married Otillia Barloon; Mary married Joseph Martinek; Agnes married John Tekippe; Lucy married Albert Soukup; and James married Alice Riehle.

Kurth, Dr. Steven L.

Dr. Steven L. Kurth was born in Waukon, IA. He grew up on an Allamakee Co farm and was educated in the Waukon schools. He attended the University of Northern Iowa from 1971 to 1975 receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree. He attended the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Iowa City, IA from 1975 to 1979.

He began his first dental office in Waukon that same year. Since then, five additional dentists joined Dr. Kurth at practices he founded in Waukon, Monona, IA, Prairie du Chien, Wl, and Decorah, IA.

Dr. Kurth and his wife Judy have three children: Blaine 15, Ross 13, and Brooke 12. Dr. Kurth appreciates the beauty of Northeast Iowa and enjoys farming as his major hobby.
