Daniel Phillip (7 Jan 1912-27 Jul 1980) never married. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He lived in Castalia and then made his home in Davenport, IA.

Donald Elmo (14 Nov 1913-21 Dec 1975) married Gladys Olson 20 Apr 1940. They were the parents of seven children: Sharrol, Mary, Donald, George, Susan Janet, Rebecca and Rosalee. They lived in Waterloo, IA. Donald served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mildred Luella (11 May 1917-19 Oct 1973) married Arnold Tieskotter on 26 Dec 1942. They farmed near Castalia and then near Harmony, MN. They were the parents of five children: Richard, Clair, William, James and Jean.

Kobriger, Phillip and Eva (Doliard)

Phillip Kobriger and Eva (Dollard) Kobriger were both born in Bavaria, Germany - Phillip on 8 Jan 1833 and Eva on 21 Nov 1833. They were married there and two of their eleven children were born in Germany. In 1858 they emigrated to the United States landing at New York on the first of December. They lived in Wisconsin for several years where three more of their children were born. They then came to Festina, IA. A son, George John was born there. Five more children were born when they lived near Ossian, IA. By the 1880 census, they were listed as farmers in Bloomfield Twp. Phillip became a naturalized citizen on 14 Oct 1868. He died 11 Oct 1909. Eva died 23 May 1922.

Margaret Josephine (12 Aug 1863-18 Sep 1937) married Stewart Oxley. Phillip (3 Sep 1864-14 Mar 1940) married Frances Schmitz. George John (16 Oct 1867-4 Aug 1929) married Elsie McMartin. Barbara (22 Feb 1870-17 Aug 1947) married Fred Allen. Elizabeth (6 Jul 1872-1 Sep 1964) married Clarence Hawkins. Christina HOJun 1874-

Koenig, Earl and Bernice (Bachelder)

Earl Leon Rueben Koenig was born on a farm near Castalia, IA. He is a son of Fred H. and Alma (Schlie) Koenig.

He grew up on the family farm in Bloomfield Twp, east of Castalia. He enjoyed playing baseball and was a left-handed pitcher for the Castalia Town Team. His greatest achievement came in Sep 1947, when the Castalia Cubs were invited to and played in the Julien Dubuque Days baseball tournament in Dubuque, IA. Earl pitched, and with the help of his team mates, defeated a strong Prairie du Chien, Wl club, 4 to 2 in the first round of the tournament. In the second round, Castalia battled a highly rated Dubuque White Sox team for 18 innings before Dubuque won 2 to 1.

Earl pitched the entire 18 innings, the game going until nearly 2 o’clock the next morning. He was named to the All Star team, having hurled 27 innings and allowing only 4 runs.

Earl married Bernice Eva Bachelder on 24 Oct 1947 in Postville, IA. She is the daughter of Earl and Hattie (Brandt) Bachelder. Bernice was born at Castalia. She attended school at Castalia until it closed in 1944. She graduated from Postville High School in 1946. For a time she worked as bookkeeper at Schutte’s Furniture Store in Postville, IA. She is active in St. Paul Church WELCA at Postville and bookkeeper for the farm and Koenig Equipment, and a volunteer at the Postville School Library. Earl worked at the Carnation Milk Plant in Castalia and later bought a milk route and hauled can milk. He sold the milk route and began farming in Nov 1950. In 1964 he began selling, installing and servicing barn and silo equipment for Acorn, Rochester Silo and VanDale. He continued to farm. He served a term as president of St. Paul Lutheran Church council in Postville and is still very active there. He was on the Frankville Cheese Factory Board for a number of years and served as president of the board for awhile. He also served as assistant Fire Chief for the Frankville Fire Dept, and was a volunteer fireman for 35 years. He enjoys Bluegrass music and had a Bluegrass program on station KDEC, Decorah, IA for six years.

Children of Earl and Bernice are: Steven married Betty Nuss 4 Sep 1971. They live in Elwood, NE where Steve is Marketing Consultant for Progressive Marketing Strategies, Inc. Dale married Sandra Handeland 8 Dec 1984. Their children are: Jonathan and Christopher. Dale is operations manager for Midwestern Power Division, Cummins Great Plains in Des Moines, IA. David  married Cynthia Singleton 23 Mar 1985. Their children are: Benjamin and Nichoias. David is Regional Claims Manager of Principal Health Care of Iowa, Inc. in West Des Moines. Frederick William (Bill) married Lynn Krotz 9 Oct 1993. Bill is an Agricultural Experiment Engineer at Iowa State University in Ames, IA.

Koenig, Fred H. and Alma (Schlie)

Fred Henry Koenig was born 8 May 1886 on a farm three miles east of Castalia. IA. He lived his entire life of 81 years on this same farm. He was a son of Wilhelm and Charlotte (Meier) Koenig.

Fred was married to Alma Schlie 24 Jan 1917. Alma was a daughter of Christ and Anna (Mohs) Schlie. She was born 14 Nov 1894 near Postville, IA. Fred farmed all his life and purchased the farm he was born on from his father in 1912. This land became an Iowa Century Farm
