Andrew Herald and Anastasia (Bouska) Herald

The story is told when two-year old Eleanora died of croup her father Andrew drove to Spillville for a coffin with three or four big timber wolves racing alongside his horses. Andrew died 2 Feb 1917 and Anastasia died 5 Dec 1937. They are buried in St. Clement Cemetery near Spillville.

Bernard and Mary (Leopold) Herold

Bernard Herold the fifth son of Nick and Dorothy Herold was born 14 Mar 1819 in Birkenfeld, Germany. His wife Mary Leopold Herold was born 18 Mar 1823 in Germany. They were married in Germany and their first children were born there.

When Bernard was 30 years old he and Mary came to America and lived for a short time near Buffalo, New York. Their fourth child Andrew was born while they lived there. They were the parents of 12 children: Regina married John (Nick) Ludwig; Hank wife unknown; Clement (died as an infant and was buried at seal: Andrew married Anastasia (Stella) Bouska; Elizabeth married Jacob Backel; John married Evangeline Wingard; Catherine (Katief married Jake Gerstner; Wilhelmina married Jake Meuller; George married Mary Phillips; Joseph married Margaret Baker; and Fred married Margaret Heiser.

When Andrew was 4 Bernard and Mary moved with their family from New York to a farm in Sumner Twp., Winneshiek Co. where they built a log cabin and farmed the rest of their lives. Bernard died 26 May 1904 and Mary died 22 Mar 1900. They are buried in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville, IA.

Herold, Martin and Mayme (Baker)

Martin Herold was born 17 Sep 1883 in Jackson Twp. west of Fort Atkinson the son of Andrew and Anastasia (Bouska) Herold. (See Andrew Herold History). He married Mayme Baker who was born 14 Nov 1887 the daughter of Mary and Jacob Baker. The wedding took place 27 Nov 1917 in St. Joseph's Church, Cresco, IA.

Martin Herold family

Cletus Herold, Ambrose Herold, Mayme Herold, Martin Herold, Anastasia Herold, Valeria Herold and Rosemary Herold, about 1942.

Martin was taught by Kate Demming at the public school in Fort Atkinson and later attended Valders College in Decorah. He earned his teaching certificate there and taught in rural schools for several years. Mayme was educated in the New Oregon rural school in Howard Co. and in the St. Lucas Catholic School.

In 1917 Martin and Mayme purchased a farm one half mile south of his parental home. (The present farm of Matt and Lori Herold). They were the parents of 5 children: Ambrose married Evelyn Lewis and they live in Dallas, TX; Valeria of Fort Atkinson; Cletus married Anita Stammeyer and they live on a farm west of Fort Atkinson; Anastasia married Cyril Kriener and they live on a farm southwest of Fort Atkinson: Rosemary married Leo Kriener and they also live on a farm southwest of Fort Atkinson. Martin died 17 Sep 1955 and Mayme died 25 Nov 1967. They are buried in St. John’s Cemetery, Fort Atkinson.
