Florence Bucknell Jewell died 11 Jan 1991 and Walter William Jewell died Feb 1980. They are buried in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah.

Buddenberg, Davis and Gretchen (Gruhn)

Davis W. Buddenberg, was born  in Winneshiek Co. to Wilbur and Louella (Thorson) Buddenberg. His paternal grandparents were Henry W. and Bertha (Roth) Buddenberg. His maternal grandparents were Ole and Betsy Thorson. Davis attended rural school near his home in Bloomfield Twp. He learned to be a farmer from his father. On 28 Oct 1950 he married Gretchen Gruhn. Gretchen was born  near Postville to Fred and Elsie (Scharr) Gruhn. The Gruhn family came from Germany in 1919 with a family of 4 daughters. Five more children were born in the United States with Gretchen being the youngest.

Davis and Gretchen farmed on the home farm until their son Michael and his family moved onto the farm. At this time Davis followed the occupation of being a trucker. Fie also worked for Riley Construction of Ossian. Davis and Gretchen built a new home in Castalia. They are active members of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, the church that Davis's grandfather H. W. Buddenberg helped to organize.

Davis and Gretchen are the parents of 5 children: Deborah Jean, (b. 2 Aug 952) Natalie Ann, Michael W., Catherine Louella and Matthew Davis. Deborah  married James D. Bouska, son of Frances and Paulene (Frana) Bouska. Debbie and Jim were the parents of 2 daughters: Rachel Lea  and Kerree Michelle (b. 3 Mar 1980). Debbie died in a car accident 27 Sep 1984.    Jim died in a car accident 1 Dec 1984. Natalie  had complications from meningitis and red measles leaving her with some brain damage. She is a very happy and family oriented person and is a part of Opportunity Homes and Spectrum Industries of Decorah. Michael  is the 4th generation Buddenberg to live on the home farm. He married Ann Juen 14 Sep 1985.    They have 2 children: Derek Michael  and Lindsey Ann . Ann is the daughter of William and Helen (Gerleman) Juen. Her paternal grandparents are Dr. J. A. and Lila (Flesch) Juen. Her maternal grandparents are Albert and Catherine (Zweibohmer) Gerleman. Catherine  graduated from Ossian High School and attended a business school in Cedar Falls. She was employed at John Deere Credit Co. in Des Moines, IA. She married John Holdsworth 26 Nov 1988 in Newton, IA. They have 2 children: Miranda Catherine  and Dylan William . They live on an acreage near Monroe, IA. John is employed at Maytag Co. in Newton. Matthew was born  in LaCrosse, Wl. After graduation from high School he attended Hawkeye Tech, at Waterloo, IA for 1 1/2 years. He began working at Decorah Auto after the completion of his schooling. He has an avid interest in racing, receiving many Champion Trophies in go-cart racing. He lives in Calmar.

Buddenberg, Henry and Bertha (Roth)

Henry William Buddenberg was born in 1865 in the Province of Westphalen, Germany. He was a butcher apprentice in German in the town of Destel. At age 17 he emigrated to America. For a time he worked in St. Louis, Mo driving mules for a street car. Then he traveled to Garnavillo, IA where he worked as a well driller for Louis Schroeder. He attended school at National, IA, Clayton Co. where he learned to read and write English. He spoke often of attending class with the first graders.

At age 27 he married Bertha Roth aged 17. Her mother was Mary Catherine Sass who came from Mecklenburg/ Schwerine Germany. After Henry and Bertha’s marriage they farmed in the Postville area until 1900 when they purchased 80 acres in Bloomfield Twp. They later added another 80 acres. Henry was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. Henry and Bertha were parents of 5 children: Harvey, Elmer, Wilbur, Melvin and Ruby.

Harvey was born 27 Oct 1897 on a farm near Postville. He entered the U.S. Navy in World War I. He married Amy Moen 1 Sep 1920. They farmed in various places near Postville and in Bloomfield Twp. They were parents of 3 children: Ronald, Margaret and Audrey. In 1958 they retired and moved to Mesa, AZ. Harvey died 31 Aug 1961.

Elmer was born 6 May 1900 in the vicinity of Postville. A short time later the family moved to Bloomfield Twp. where Elmer lived the rest of his life. On 1 May 1923 he married Ruth Boyle. Elmer worked for 35 years for the Iowa Highway Commission. Ruth taught for many years. They had one son Rodney. Rodney married Irene Kamp. They live in Des Moines. Elmer died 13 Jan 1969.

Wilbur was born 12 Oct 1903 in Bloomfield Twp. Wilbur graduated from the Castalia High School. He married Louella Thorson 19 Aug 1928 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, IA. Louella was the daughter of Ole and Betsy (Johnson) Thorson. After various occupations the couple made their home on the Buddenberg farm where they continued to live the rest of their lives. They were the parents of Davis, Janet and Bonita.

Melvin was born 19 Jul 1906. He married Vera Meyer 23 Mar 1930 at Waukon, IA. They farmed on one of the farms owned by Melvin's parents. Melvin and Vera shared the farm home with Henry W. and Bertha Buddenberg. Henry W. died in 1931 and Bertha died in 1936. Melvin and Vera were the parents of Lolita, Beverly and Bill. Vera died in 1957 and Melvin died in 1982.

Ruby was born 12 Jan 1915. She married Dale Reeves. They live in California. Their children are Judith and Connie.

Henry and Bertha also adopted a daughter, Amelia Frey, who was 8 years old when adopted, thus making her the oldest of their 6 children.
