George O. Johnson



St. Sgt. George O. Johnson, son of Ole and Ode Johnson, was born June 21, 1919. He graduated from Scarville high school in May 1936 and entered the army on February 16, 1941. He died on April 18, 1945 and is buried in the U.S. Military cemetery, Margraten, Holland.

Hero Honored at Scarville - S. Sgt. George Johnson Gives Life in Germany

Scarville, Ia. - Memorial services were held Sunday for S/Sgt. George Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Johnson, of Lake Mills at the Lutheran church in Scarville with the Rev. Mr. Fretheim officiating.

S/Sgt. Johnson was a graduate of Scarville high school and entered service Feb. 16, 1941. He was a member of the 104th Timberwolf division of the 9th army and had been overseas 8 months, serving in France, Belgium and Germany. On Oct. 25, 1944, S/Sgt. Johnson was awarded the bronze star for meritorious achievement. On May 3 his parents received word that he was missing in action. One week later he was reported killed. He was buried in Breuna U.S. Military cemetery in Breuna, Germany. A Protestant chaplain officiated at the service. On the day he was killed his company was attacking enemy strong points in the vicinity of Thurlan, Germany. The enemy was concentrating heavy artillery and small arms fire on our troops.

Surviving are his parents, 2 brothers, Roy and Reuben, and 2 sisters, Marjorie and Doris.
