"Mrs Mary Erickson was born in Årdal, Norway. She came to this country
at the age of 13, crossing the Atlantic in a sailing vessel which took six weeks
to reach Quebec, Canada. Upon arrival to this country she made her home in Champaign
County, Ill. She was united in Marriage to Ole Erickson, who died 13 years ago.
Mrs Erickson though quiet by nature, was a great reader, spending every leisure
moment throughtout her life with her books and papers. Her favorite book was the
bible, Goszner’s Treasury and the works of Martin Luther. She was always anxious
to receive her copies of the church publications, which helped her sustain her faith
in missions, a field in which she was entensely interested. Though her main interests
were always along religious lines she was still eager to learn more and more about
every good cause and to do her share in furthering the same.
Her keen interest in the government of her country maybe known from the fact that she never failed to cast her vote
if it were possible to reach the polls at election time. Being very ancious to vote
at the coming election and urging all other with whom she met to do likewise. She
will be much missed by those who enjoyed her humble self sacrificing nature.
Nine children are left to mourn the loss of a Christian mother whose faith in her savior remained steadfast to the
end. The children are: Peter, Ira, Henry, Rasmus, Martn, Anna Poldervaart, Obi,
and Edward all of whom live in or near Fort Dodge. And Susanna who discontinued
her research work in the field of education three years ago in order to care for
her mother, who had suffered more or less during that time from Cardiac-Asthma.
The illness which resulted n her death. Twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren,
one sister, Mrs Anna Hatland of Humboldt and one brother Henry Peterson of East
Orwell, Ohio also survive." |
