South Tier Democrat was established at Corydon in 1858 by D. S. Butler and A. O. Binckley.  In 1861, the firm became Binckley and Estes, and later Binckley and Morrett.  The last named partners were said not to agree very well, and during one quarrel, Binckley hid a part of the press to prevent publication of the next issue.  Binckley finally secured possession and moved the press to Missouri in 1864.

Corydon Monitor was begun by a Republican stock company organized at Corydon.  The members obtained the material from an impoverished Chariton paper and from the same town they imported Charles H. Austin, printer.  With William Hartshorn in charge, publication was begun in 1863.  Hartshorn died in 1867, and the paper was owned for some time by his widow, who employed George Albertson through 1870 as editor.

Lineville Index was established early in 1870 by H. M. Bevel.  He moved the office to Corydon and published the Index there as a Republican paper through that year.
