Wayne County
The Wayne County mines work what is
known as the Appanoose or Mystic seam of coal,
which has a thickness of about thirty (30)
inches, but it has a clay band from one-half to
three inches thick in the middle
This seam, as with the Nodaway
seam, is mined long wall where the fire clay is
removed from under the coal, then the coal
breaks of its own weight or wedges are sometimes
used to break it.
Only a few mines are operating
here, and then only a limited output is had as
there is no mechanization except the gasoline
hoists, and miners are hard to employ.
