Allerton, Iowa Centennial, PARKER HOSPITAL
Dr. B. B. Parker came to Allerton in 1912 to
practice medicine, in Allerton and Wayne County. Parker
Hospital was first developed from a two room
“rooming house” for the sick. It was
started in 1922.
Later one of the rooms was equipped as an
operating room.
As demands increased, the hospital was moved
to an eight room house which is now the Nichol’s
Custodial Home.
Six patients could be cared for and a
permanent operating room was established.
In 1927, he bought the Merritt home at the
corner of Elm and Wayne Streets and ten hospital
rooms and modern operating room were equipped. A full
time registered nurse, Miss Mae Kragenbrink, was in
charge. Mrs.
Winnie Beavers was hospital assistant. Dr.
Parker’s office was in the lower part of the Masonic
building at this time.
Jan. 1, 1936, the hospital was closed, torn
down, and Dr. Parker moved to Centerville to
continue his practice.
Mrs. Elisa Miskimmins lives in the home built
on the corner lot where the hospital once stood. Around
1955 Leona Calif opened a Rest Home in Allerton
which is located on Elm Street.
Nichol’s Custodial Home which is located on
Pine Street, and operated by Nichols for 2 years,
was formerly Pauline’s Nursing Home and in the early
1920’s was Dr. Parker’s Hospital.
