FAMILY
Wendell (Gene) Beavers, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Cloyd Beavers married Virginia Houston, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Houston of Allerton, June 16,
1951 at the United Presbyterian Church in Allerton.
Gene graduated from Allerton High School with
the Class of 1948.
Worked in Webster City and after marriage was
drafted and served in “Love” Co. 7th
Regiment, 3rd Division of the Army during
the Korean conflict.
He came home with rank of Master Sergeant and
was proud recipient of the Korean Campaign medal
with a Silver Star denoting five major campaigns, a
Japanese Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantry Award
and a Bronze Star for valor accompanied by a plaque
signed by the President of the U. S. Gene is
assistant Wayne County Engineer and has been
employed by Wayne County 20 years.
Virginia was born and raised in Allerton and
graduated with the class of 1951 from Allerton High
School. After
graduation was married and moved to Webster City. Lived a
short time in Colorado Springs, Colo. Gene and
Virginia have lived in Allerton on an acreage for 20
years. She
now is employed by the Times-Republican Newspaper at
Corydon. They
have taught square and round western square dance
lessons for twelve years. Gene has
called all over the state and in several other
states.
The couple have lived most of their life in
Allerton and are the proud parents of three sons –
Sammie, Randy and Billy all of which have been
active in the community. All
started school in Allerton and attended there until
consolidation with Cambria-Corydon. All
are members of the Christian Church. Sam was
awarded the Eagle Scout Award in Boy Scouts.
Sam married Cyndi Hays, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Howard Hays of Corydon. The couple
have one son, Sammie Jr. and they make their home in
Shenandoah where Sam is Swing Assistant Manager of
Hy-Vee Food Store.
