ALLERTON PUBLIC LIBRARY

In 1920 Allerton felt the need of a library and many expressed a desire for it.  Early in 1921, the Town Council appointed the first Board of Library Trustees.  Officers: Roxy Troster, Pres.; Meda Bracewell, Vice Pres.; and Nellie Galford, Sec.  Board members:  Mrs. Bullis, Mayme Rogers and Eva Brunet.

From donations by business houses, banks, clubs, and white elephant sales, money was raised to clean the upper floor of the Town Hall, buy  stove and shelves or books donated to be loaned out to others.  The town gave some tax money.

Miss Winifred Conklin served as the first librarian.  She was followed by Mrs. Clarice Boston, Gladys Liggett, Dosia Dyer, Marietta Wolf and Edith Snodgrass who is the present librarian.

There are some 5900 books besides magazines and paper-backed books on the shelves.  Many good books have been donated for which the library is always grateful.  Many books were donated from the libraries of Bullis and Condit and Eva Neill.  In 1972, 52 adult books, 23 juvenile books and 7 monthly magazines were purchased.

The library is open from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays and an average of 10 to 15 books go out on each of these days.

Today the library board consists of Mrs. Kermit Niday, Pres.; Mrs. Pearl Bracewell, Vice Pres.; Mrs. Cloyd Bryan, Sec.; Mrs. Edith McDaniel, Treas.; Mrs. Jim Russell, Advisor; and Mrs. LeRoy Lunsford who is a new member.
