War Veterans

The list below is primarily based on cemetery records, including the WPA and further verified by cemetery survey documents and photographs. Work is in progress to add pictures to the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project and obituaries to the Obituary Board. Many of the names were identified in newspaper articles published around Decoration Day, including "Honoring the Dead - Old Soldiers Buried in Woodlawn and Elm Grove Cemeteries," published in Washington Democrat 1917and 1919, and others regarding soldiers buried in the Ainsworth and Brighton Cemeteries. Land and military records were also used to verify this information.

Remembrance

This flag commemorates the 1812 military service of Lot Hayden who lived in Ainsworth and is buried in the Campground Cemetery. This flag is in the Washington County Historical Society Collection at the Conger House. The flag in 1812 had 15 stars, so it is assumed that this 48 star flag may have been made circa 1912 to mark the 100th anniversary of the war. Click on photo to enlarge the picture.
