Adkins, Charles "Ed"

Charles "Ed" Adkins, 80, died October 1, 1997 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center. He was born October 17, 1916 in Davenport to Charles and Evie (Taylor) Adkins. He was married to Alice Louise Brown December 23, 1935 in Mexico, Mo. Survivors include a son, Chuck Adkins, two daughters Jill Roberts and Jo Dee Cotrell, two sisters, Ruth Williams, and Margarete Orcutt. AESCHLIMAN

Aeschliman, Patricia (nee Farrell)

Patricia Aeschliman, 51, Port Byron, Ill. died December 13, 1997 at Geneseo West in Davenport.

Patricia Farrell was born April 4, 1946 in Sioux Rapids to Walter Farrell, Jr. and Lalia Zane Parks Farrell . She married Dvid Aeshliman on August 14, 1983 in LeClaire and attended northeast Louisiana State University and the University of Iowa. Patricia began her advertising career in Cedar Rapids at CMF & Z where she worked primarily on the Pioneer Hi-Bred Seed account. She later became the manager of Public relations for DeKalb-Pfizer Genetics in De Kalb, Ill.

Upon her marriage in 1983, she moved to the Quad Cities area and continued working in the advertising industry until 1988, when she pursued her interior design degree. She receved a degree in 19990 and since then, Mrs. Aeschliman has operated her own firm, Lifestyles Interiors of Port Byron.

Survivors include: her husband, David of Port Byron; a son, Adrian WOods of Moline, Ill; her parents Walter Farrell, Jr. and Lalia Zane Farrell; two sisters, Pamella Shelman of Washington, and Deborah Manning of Alton; a brother Walter "{Wally" Farrell III of Washington; and five nieces and five nephews. Allen, Lucy

Lucy Allen, 95 died September 18, 1997 at Maplewood Manor at Keota, Iowa. She was born August 11, 1902 in Bangor, Iowa to William E. and Amanda (Davis) Ross. She married Raymond F. Allen on December 15, 1925. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, two sisters and a half brother.(Washington Evening Journal, Sept. 22, 1997, P. 10)

ALLEN, Ruth

Ruth Allen, 77, died November 5, 1997 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa city. Ruth Gram ws born September 29, 1920 in Dickinson, N.D., to John and Versa (Jarvis) Gram.  On November 26,1944, she married Harvey Lee Allen in Kahoka, Mo. Survivors include: five daughters, Sally Allen, Bonnie Crawley, Joyce Phillips, Karen Henderson, and Kathy Nisly; a son John Allen; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a brother, Robert Gram. Andrew, Martha (Nee Howard)

Martha Andrew, 91, died October 1, 1997 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, Iowa. SHe was born February 21, 1906 in St. Louis, Mo. to Arthur and Laura (Jolly) Howard. She was married to Lowell Andrew, August 1, 1930 in Popular Bluff, Mo. Survivors include her husband Lowell, of Washington, two sons Arthur and James; two daughters Julia Gamon and Lucy Butterworth. BAIRD, FLORENCE M.

Florence M. Baird, 93, died October 25, 1997 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. She was born August 1, 1901 in Ainsworth to George F. and Cora E. (Lord) Baird.  Survivors include an adopted son, Bryce Lord, and a cousin Alice Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents. Washington Evening Journal, October 28,1997, page 7)

Bates, Marion M.

Marion M. Bates, 93, died October 18,1997 at the UP Home in Washington. She was born September 15, 1904 in Louisa County to Howard and Lucia (Nichols) Bates. Survivors include two cousins Robert Bates of Washington and Betty Bayne of Fairfax; two nieces and two nephews. BANKS, Glenn

Glenn Banks, 52, died November 17, 1997 at the Burlington Medical Center. Mr. Banks was born May 15, 1945 in Washington County to Davis George and Helen Lenore (Willis) Banks. He married Rosemary Rita Koehler on June 17,1966 in Ainsworth. He suffered a brain aneurysm in 1981 and was unable to work full time after that. SUrvivors include: his wife, Rosemary Banks; three daughters, Tara S. Dillard and Holly J. Banks and Brandy L. FOster; four grandchildren; a sister, Carole A. Loeffler ; three brothers, David L. Bauer, Walter

Walter Bauer, 93, died October 14, 1997. He was born February 23, 1904 in Washington County to Ernest and Ethel (Hopkinson) Bauer. He married Florence C. Gardner on May 29,1926. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Paul, a son, Fred Bauer of Upland, Calif; two brothers David and E. Theodore Buaer, seven grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. Beachy, Elsie Malinda (nee Glick)

Elsie Malinda  Beachy, 64,  died  September 27, 1997.  Shewas born July 27, 1933 to Daniel and Malinda (Yoder) Glick. She was married to John Beachy near Kalona on November 24, 1955. Suvivors include her husband John; two sons Daniel Omer Beachy and Marvin Jonas Beachy; three brothers Harley Glick, Enos Glick and John Glick; one sister Elva and 18 grandchildren. Bower, Edith L.(Nee Johnston)

Edith L. Bower, 81, Keota died October 4, 1997 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Edith Johnston was born October 26, 19115 in Kinross to Merrill and Elizath (Powers) Johnston. She married to Frederick E. Bower on January 18, 1938. Survivors include two daughters: Patricia Wade and Rita Barnett; four sons, Charles, Ed, Bernard and Bruce.; 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren,; two sisters, Mabel O'Brien and Ethel. She was preceded in death by her husband on September 10, 1995, parents, six brothers and one infant sister. (Washington Evening Journal)

BENNETT, DANIEL

Daniel Lee Bennett, 63, Keota, died November 27, 1997 at University Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness. He was born February 17, 1934 in Keota to Walter R. and Esther Marie (Baker) Bennett. He married Lois Elaine Nornberg on April 28, 1953 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. Survivors include: his wife, Lois; six children: Jacque Sieren of SIgourney, Scott Bennett of Mesa, Ariz; Kelly Bennett of Keota, David Bennett of Lancaster, CA; Judy Berg, of Sigourney, and James Bennett of Lancaster, Calif; a brother Richard Bennett of Lancaster, Calif; a sister Beatrice Vogel of Lancaster, 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. CAMERON

CAMERON, BEATRICE Ethelbert

Beatrice Ethelbert Cameron, 93, Washington, died November 27,1997 at the Halcyon House in Washington. Beatrice Riley was born June 30, 1904 in Escanaha, Mich. to Edward F. and Rose Riley. She married Oliver Gene Cameron in 1922. Mr. Cameron died in 1958. The couple owned the North Side Cleaners and Dryers in Chicago until he died. At one point, the Camerons cleaned the uniforms of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. Mrs. Cameron had lived in Washington since 1981. Survivors include: a son, Gene Cameron, Jr. of Wilmett, Ill and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a daughter. CHODY, Joseph R.

Joseph R. Chody, 71, Kalona, died October 9, 1997. Joseph Chody was born August 2, 1926 in Iowa City to Harry and Sylvia (Niffenegger) Chody. He married Mary Ellen Bermel in September 1955 in Muscatien. Survivors include: a son, Joseph "Randy" Chody II, a daughter Oma Rose Selle and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen in 1969 and his parents. (Wash. Even. CHUCK

CHUCK, Eleanor Marie (nee Stevens)

Eleanor Marie Stevens Chuck, 80, Houston, Texas, died Nov. 30, 1997 after four months confinement to bed.

Eleanor Stevens was born Dec. 12, 1916 to Ray and Susan (Grant) Stevens on the Stevens farm near Charlotte, Mich. That farm is now a Michigan Centennial Farm.

She graduated from Western Michigan State Tech, now Western Michigan University at Kalamazoo, Mich. Whe went to Venezuela in 1945 to teach in the oil companies' American Schools.

Frank Chuck went to Venezuela in 1947. The couple met in the La Salina camp in 1949 and married in New Orleans in 1952. They continued to live in Venezuela until 1974 when Frank was transferred to Houston. 

Survivors include: her husband; a nephew and sister-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. (Wash. Even. Journ., Dec. 2, 1997, p. 8)

Colby, Marion (nee Reader)

Marion Colby, 102, died Oct. 23, 1997, Washington. She was born Sept. 8, 1895 in Pipestone, Minn. to Edward L. and Nell (Kepner) Reader. She married William Davis Colby in 1923. Survivors include two sons, Richard Reader Colby of Washignton and Charles Reader Colby of Penn Valley, Calif; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two nephews. CONANT, PRESTON S.

Former Washington and Keota Resident Preston S. Conant, 88, died October 28,1 997. He was born November 6, 1908 in West Burlington to Rev. Preston and Ida (Wise) Conant. Downs, Verna Belle

Verna Belle Downs, 93, died Sept. 21, 1997 at Washington County Hospital after a short illness. She was born April 11, 1904 in Keota to John L. and Mary Edna (Morgan) Smith. On July 17, 1946, she married John Downs in Kansas City, Mo. Survivors include a niece and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989, three sisters, a brother and her parents. DUNBAR, Anna Ruth (nee SORRELL)

Anna Ruth Dunbar, 75, died November 1, 1997 at the Washington County Hospital. She was born June 29, 1922 in Washington to Sherman N. and Maye (Kumm) Sorrell. She married Kenneth Armstrong in 1944. After that marriage ended, he married Robert C. Dunbar on May 28,1 949. Survivors include: two sons, Ron Armstrong and RIck Dunbar; a daughter Randi Dunbar; a brother Bob Sorrell; three grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. ECHRICH, Peter E.

Peter E. Echrich, 86, died November 3, 1997 at the Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield. He was born March 26, 1911 near Iowa City to Joseph and Theresa (Miller) Eckrich. He married Loretta Moore on August 21, 1930 in Iowa City. Survivors include: two sons, Cletus and Everette Eckrich; a daughter, Karla Widmer; two brothers, Joseph Eckrich and Louis P. Eckrich; four sisters, Sister Theresa (Kathryn) Miller, Theresa Eckrich, Agnes Rocca, and Magdalena Parrizek; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. EDMONDSON

Edmondson, Willard "Bill"

Willard "Bill" Edmondson, 78, Mesa, Ariz. died August 26, 1997 in Gilbert, Ariz. Mr. Edmondson was born and raised in Washington, Iowa. No birth date given. He served in the U.S. Army during World War ii, was awarded the Bronze Star and was part of the liveration of concentration camps. He retired in 1978 from employment with the federal government at the Rock Island Arsenal Island, Rock Island, Ill. Survivors include: nephews, James K. Edmondson and Larry J. Edmondson; nieces Pam Larsen and Judy Marshall and sister-in-law, Pat Abram.

FOSS, Orville Edward

Edward Orville Foss, 86, Mount Pleasant, died November 19, 1997 at the Henry County Health Center from complications following a ship fracture. He was born Feb. 28,1911 in the Pleasant Hill area southeast of Washington to Leroy Augustus and Clarabell (Stiles) Foss. He married Alcidene Spencer of Ainsworth on December 14, 1932 in Washington. The couple moved to Mount Pleasant in 1935. Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Vera Holm of Stockport and Eva Rathemell of Washington; three children, Delbert Foss, Beverly Wood, and Sandra Huff; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. GAUTHIER, Frank Joseph

Frank Joseph Gauthier, 93, died November 30, 1997 at his rural Keota home after a sudden illness. He was born March 10, 1904 in Monico, Wis., to Vincent Joseph and Martha (Winchell) Gauthier. He married Estelle Keelong on September 27, 1927 in Chicago. Survivors include: a daughter Mable Dunning, of Keota; five sons, Clyde D. Guathier of Shell Lake, Wis., Glen R. Guathier of Lindenhurst, Ill.; Christopher D. Guathier of Lindenhurst, Il; Arhtur B. Guathier of Georgia, and Richard A. Guathier of Bayfield, Wis; a sister Mary Louise Zwicki of Stens Point, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Chris A. Gingerich, 93, died Novmeber 10, 1997. He was born September 12, 1904 in Johnson County, the son of Amos and Elizabeth (Brenneman) Gingerich. Survivors include: four children, Clara Miller, Mary Swantz, Ray and Esther Yoder; 24 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Miller, and Edna Beachy; a brother Willard Gingerich. GREEN

Green, Ernest

Ernest E. Green, 84, died Saturday, October 2, 1997 at the Washington Care Center. He was born May 7, 1913 to Edward and Josephine (Birks) Green in Louisa County. Mr. Green was a longtime Washington resident and a farmer in Marion Townshop. He married Irene Violet Havel on October 2, 1935 in Louisa County. She died in 1962. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a former member of I.O.O.F. Survivors include two daughters Marie See and Mary Ann Pacha of Washington, a half brother, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1962 and twin daughters in 1945, and his parents. (Wash. Even. Journal, Fri., October 3, 1997, page 10)

GREINER, Cyril Frank

Cyril Frank Greiner, 82, Keota, died November 24, 1997 at Maplewood Manor in Keota following a long illness. Mr. Greiner was born July 30, 1915 near Tallyrand in rural Keokuk County to John W. and Mary (Lahr) Greiner. On September 24,1940, he married Loretta G. Britten at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. Survivors include: his wife, Loretta, of Keota; three sons, Jerome Greiner of Cedar Rapids, Gary Greiner of WIlliamsburg and Marvin Greiner of Keota; a daughter Kathy Brinning of Keota; a sister Helen Peiffer of Washington; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. GUENTHER, EDITH MAE

Edith Mae Guenther, 91, died October 1, 1997 at the Washington Care Center. She was born September 16, 1906, the daughter of John and Myrtle (Gray) Miller in Trenton, Iowa. She married Adolph Guenther , September 17, 1929 in Washington. Survivors include a daughter Rita E. Stout of Washington and a brother Harold C. Miler, Mesa, Ariz.; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, four step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren. Adolph Guenther died in 1990. (Wash. Even. Allen J. Haberman, 55, died November 9, 197 in Iowa City. He was born May 29, 1942 in Iowa City to Arch and Maurine (Nosbish) Haberman. Michael Wayne Hall, 20, died November 17, 1997 of injuries suffered in a car-semi accident near Lowden. Michael was born June 9, 1977 in Omaha, Neb. to Gary Long and Julia Hall. He lived in Washington since 1987. Survivors include: his mother and step-father Julia and Anthony Batchelor of Lake View; his father Gary Long; additional father, Steve Fall; step sister, Karra Batcheller; grandparents, Larry and Cherryl Hall; and step-grandparents, Vern and Anna Lou Batchellor. Carl Harbison, 75, died October 11, 1997. He was born August 31, 1922 in Schyler County, Mo. to James and Calla (McCloskey) Harbison. He married 2 February 1946 to Wilma ?. Survivors include his wife Wilma, four sons, Jerry, Don, Wayne and Dennis Harbison; a daughter Linda Snyder; a brother,  Eugene Harbison; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Hauter, Andy

Andy Hauter, 65 died Thursday, September 25, 1997. He was born September 28,1931 to Andrew and Emily (McKinstry) Hauter. He was raised in the Washington area. He worked for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids for 32 years. He was Director of Reliabiltiy and Engineering, and Support Analysis for the company. Survivors include his wife Audrey (Coons) Hauter; a son Steve Hauter and two daughters Sonja Hauter, and Lisa Deyem. and a sister, Julia Hauter Triplett and two half brothers Elliott McKinstry and John McKinstry. 


HARTZLER

Hartzler, F. Eugene "Gene"

Eugene Hartzler, 75, died October 3, 1997. Mr. Hartzler was born December 12, 1921 in rural Johnson County to Herbert and Emma (Swartzendruber). On June 15, 1950 he married Irene Mettitt in Independence, Iowa. Survivors include: his wife, Irene of Kalona; a daughter Connie Becker and a son Jerry Hartzler of Parnell; three grandchildren; four brothers, Ron, Herb, Larry and Robert Harzler; four sisters Marietta "Betts" Yoder, Judy Wise; Rugh Southwick, and Wilma Hankins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

HERDLICKA, FERN V. (nee Plecker)

Fern V. Herdlicka, 79, Pea Ridge, Arkansas, died December 30, 1997. She was born November 17, 1918 in Wellman, to William Russell and Lottie Ann (Miller) Plecker. She attended Sharon High School and married Dale Herdlicka on Feb. 5. 1943 in Evanston, Wyo. Mrs. Herdlicka lived in Ainsworth, was a homemaker, and worked at the Ainsworth State Bank.

Survivors include: her husband, Dale Herdlicka, of Pea Ridge, Ark.; a daughter, Wilma Lee Roach of Muscatine; two sons, Wayne Russell Herdlicka of Fort Lauderdale, Fla, and James Walter Herdlicka of Houston, Texas; a brother, Everette Leroy Plecker of RIvrside, two sisters, Dora May Van Winkle and lila Jean Sass, both of Iowa City; four grandchildren; four step-granddaughters; one step-grandson; six great grandchildren; three foster great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren. Corrine S. Herrick, 74, Fairfax, died November 23, 1997 in Columbia, Mo., from injuries suffered in an auto accident. She was born December 28,1922 in Harper to Victor and Mary Peiffer. She married Melvin Herrick on June 4, 1946 in Washington. The couple lived in the SIgourney area for several years. Survivors include her husband, Melvin; two sons, Ron Herrick of Cedar Rapids and Don Herrick of Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Patricia McClure and Marilyn Wikoff, both of Washington; a brother, Edwin Peiffer of Washington; five grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, brother and a grandson. (Washington Evening Journal, Nov. 25, 1997, page 11.)

Mary E. Hochstetler, 92 died October 26,1997 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona. Mary Hochstetler was born March 12, 1905 in Fairview, Mich. to Emanuel and Mary (Zook) Hochstetler. Ruby I. Holladay died October 19,1997. She was born July 7, 1902 in Randolph to Ralph R. and Kate E. (Weihler) Armstrong. She married Theodore Holladay in Randolph on June 24, 1925. Etta M. Jenkins, 60, died October 14, 1997. She was born May 25, 1937 in Missouri to Lesley and Lawanda Kinkade. She was married to William J. Jenkins. Survivors include two daughters, Coralee Harrison of Lone Tree and Alice Higgonbotham of Greenwood, Miss. and a son Ben Seaton of Tennessee and three grandchildren. Johnson, Carl Ted

Carl Ted Johnson, 88, died October 16, 1997 in Grand Rapids. He was born in Exline (no parents or date given). He married Ann McConville in Centerville on Feb 7 1931. He served as president of the Washington Industrial Board for seven years. Survivors include his wife Ann, a daughter Anne (Max) Fulton, Grand Rapids, Minn. and two sisters, Jeanette Liley, Beloit, Wisc. and Virginia Smith, Bellevista Ark; seven grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson.

JONES, David E. Jones, 75, Kismet, Kan., died December 13, 1997 following a lengthy illness. Mr. Jones was born April 8, 1922 in Washington to Hiram R. and Hattie M. (Riley) Jacobs. He was adopted and raised by Harry and Hazel (Fisher) Jones.

Mr. Jones married Betty E. Hiller on November 29, 1941. He later married Maxine BUck Wall in September 1958. He was atruck driver for National By-Products for 15 years. Later, Mr. Jones worked in plumbing and heating in Muscatine and Columbus Junction while living in those communities. He was a member of the Marion Avenue Baptist Church and the Moose Lodge in Muscatine.

Carol D. Loeffler, 65, died at his home in Washington Monday, September 15, 1997. He ws born June 24, 1932 near Fairfield to Lloyd and Beddie (Hinkle) Loeffler. He attended school in Brighton. He married Carole Ann Banks, December 23, 1954 in Brighton. Rachel H. Longwell, 90, died October 14, 1997 in Bloomington. She was born February 20, 1907 in Wayland and married Frank Longwell March 19, 1927. She lived most of her life in Washington, was a nurse at Washington County Hospital. Survivors include a daughter Patricia Bruswitz; two grandsons and many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and three brothers. Lovick, Karl A.

Karl A. Lovick, 34, died September 25, 1997 at the University Hospitals in Iowa City. He died from complications of diabetes and kidney disease. He was born July 19,1963 in New Hampton to Ardie and Juanita (Badger) Lovick. He graduated from Washington High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. He was a salesperson in Iowa City for several years. Survivors include his parents Ardie and Juanita Lovick, a brother Steve Lovick, two sisters, Debbie Rees and Robyn Feik, and a grandfather R. J. David Lowe, 71, died unexpectedly at his residence Dec. 4, 1997.

Mr. Lowe was born September 10, 1926 in Cranston to LaFayette and Edith (Chance) Lowe. He graduated from Farson High School and served in the military during World War II. Mr. Lowe lived and farmed northeast of Ottumwa from 1937 until his retirement in 1972. For the past 25 years, he lived in Washington. He was a member of the Marion Avenue Church and the VFW. Eda O. McAvoy, 77, Washington, died November 27,1997 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a lengthy illness. She was born January 25, 1920 in Amory, Miss. to Neely and Lera (Folkes) Nash. She attended school in Hatley , Miss. and graduated from school in Lepanto, Ark. She married Robert McAvoy on July 10, 1943, in Amory, Miss. She had been a Washington resident since 1956, working for the Washington Manufacturing Company. Survivors include: her husband, Robert of Washington; three sons, Don McAvoy of Washington; Ron McAboy of Iowa City; and Tom McAboy of Grandview, Iowa; two sisters, Nesbit Kimbrough of Amory, Miss., and Loui Chism of Battle Creek, Mich. Francis Eugene McDonald, 68,died September 15, 1997 at his Cedar Rapids home following a sudden illness.  He was born April 12, 1929 in Keota to Sydney and Clara (Vogel) McDonald. Maxwell, E. Maurice

E. Maurice Maxwell , 86, Rock Island,Ill., died September 9, 1997 in East Moline, Ill. Mr. Maxwell, a former area resident was once mayor of Crawfordsville. He was born November 17, 1910 in Crawfordsville to Thomas E. and Florence (Johnson) Maxwell. He was mayor of Crawfordsville in the 1930s and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was also a teller at the former First Trust and Savings Bank in Davenport, Iowa for 20 years before retiring in 1975. Survivors include one brother Ted Maxwell of San Antonio, Tx and two nieces. MILLANE, Cecilia

Cecilia Millane, 97, a resident of the Long term care Unit of the Jefferson county Hospital, Fairfield, died Dec. 3, 1997 at the hospital.

Cecilia Arndt was born Feb. 3, 1900 in rural Jefferson County near Brighton to Willaim and Elizabeth (Franzen) Arndt. On June 18, 1924 she married John Francis Millane at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain. Mrs. Millane, who lived her entire life in Jefferson County, was a homemaker and worked at the bank in East Pleasant Plain and at the Jefferson County Hospitla. 

Survivors include: nine children; James Millane, Joseph Millane, Leo Millane, John Millane, and Rita Hammes, all of Fairfield, Sister Jane Francis of Papau, New Guinea, Edward Millane of Davenport, Sister Pacelli of Quebec, Canada and Kathryn Greiner of Keota; a sister Matilda Murrain of Liberty, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. MILLER, Marjorie

Marjorie Miller, 86, Wellman, died Dec. 3, 1997 at Mercy Hosptial in Iowa City after a lengthy illness.

Marjorie Blumenstein was born Aug. 1, 1911 in rural Wellman to Edward and MInnie (Perrin) Blumenstein. She attended rural schools and graduated from Wellman High School in 1929. 

On Sept. 19,1929, she married Melvin L. Miller in Sigourney.

Mrs. Miller worked as a cook at Wellman Hight School in 1954 and then worked at Mid-Prairie High School until 1976. She cooked for Congregate Meals and the Rotary in Wellman from 1976 to 1996.

Survivors include: four sons, E. Duane Miller and R. Dean Miller, both of Wellman, Donald Miller of Iowa City and William Miller of Washington; one daughter Sharleen Freel of Wellman; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildrne; and two sisters, Vonetta Brannon and Irene Groff, both of Wellman.

Mary Morgan, 103, Richland, died November 16, 1997 at Maplewood Manor in Keota. Mary Verle Balderson was born Augut 14, 1894 near Veo to George and Olive (Gowery) Balderson. She married Orville Morgan on September 15, 1915. He died May 26, 1950. Survivors include: three sons, Charles, John, and Bill Morgan; six grandchildren; 11 grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Mary I Novotny, 76, Cedar Rapids, died Oct. 19, 1997.  She was born February 4, 1921 in Atlanta to Edgar Sr. and Bessie (Allen) Brown. She married Edwin Novotny Sept. 4, 1949 in Tampa, Fla. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 1952 and then in 1958 moved to Washington. They bouth Guther Photo Studio which they owned and operated for 21 years until their retirement in 1979. Survivors include: her husband and three nephews. RADDA, Olive Blanche (nee Peterson)

Olive Blanche Peterson, 92, was born Feb. 12, 1905 to Andrew Peter and Jospehine (Hanson) Peterson in Dublin, Iowa. She graduated from Washington High School in 1923.

On Nov. 4, 1924, she married Jesse Radda in Washington.

Mrs. Radda, who was a lifelong resident of Washington, was a homemaker. In her earlier years, she was a school teacher at Living Lake Country School. She also helped farm with her husband northwest of Washington.

The couple also owned and operated the Christian Book Stroe in Washington for 20 years.

Mrs. Radda was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and also taught Sunday School. Survivors include: her husband, Jesse, of Washington.

Clarence Elmer Roberts was born west of Pleasant Plain to Ralph and Bertha (Roberts) Roberts. He attended area country school and lived most of his life in the Brighton area. He married Frances Drish on March 3,1930 in Bloomfiled. She died Feb 23,1985. The sister of a Washington resident has died in Nebraska. Dorothy Rude, 77, died Dec. 4, 1997 at her home in Kearney, Neb.

Dorothy Morlan was born in Mystic, Iowa on Nov. 11, 1920 to Arthur G. and Mae Marguerite (Luce) Morlan. She graduated from Mystic High School in 1938 and married Gilbert O. Rude on Sept. 21, 1946 in Mystic. THe couple lived in Auburn, Coloumbus and Omaha, Neb., before moving to Kearney 25 yrs. ago. Survivors include: her husband, Gilbert Rude of Kearney; a son, Dr. Gilbert A. Rude of Kearney; a daughter, Randi Bohr of Holdredge; a sister Patricia C. Minneman of Washington; and five grandchildren.

Former Washington Mayor, William H. Smart, 88, Mount Pleasant, died October 31, 1997 at the Maple Leaf Health Care Center in Mount Pleasant. He was born September 30, 1909 to Charles H. and Marie (Troyer) Smart. He married Vera Voss in 1937.  After her death, he married Helen Carson on January 9,1947. She died September 26,1995. SMITH

SMITH, Rev. Azel

Rev. Azel Leroy Smith, 91, died Dec. 15, 1997, at the Halcyon House in Washington.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 11, 1906, in Marion County to William C. and Bertha E. (Adams) Smith. He graduated from high school in Melcher and from Simpson College in 1942. He later attended the Garrett Biblical Institute in Evanston, Ill., and drake University.

In 1929, he married Myrtle Severn. She died on Feb. 2, 1948. On June 10, 1951, he married Ruby Forbis in Des Moines.

In his early adult years, Mr. Smith was a butcher in the Model Meat Market in Melcher. Later he was a teacher, serving in several Iowa schools. Mr. Smith was also a principal in Knoxville and Pleasantville.

After he was ordained as a deacon and received his elder's orders in 1948, the Rev. Smith served as pastor of local Methodist churches in Lacona, Pleasantville-Eden, Osceola-Lacelle, Creston and Nevada.

He retired in 1972 after taking disability leave the year before because of injuries suffered in a car accident. After his retirement, the Smiths became members of the staff at Wesley Acres Retirement Home in Des Moines. Mrs. Smith died Nov. 25, 1996. Survivors include: a son, James Smith of Des Moines; a grandson; a granddaughter; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first and second wives and a brother. (Wash. Maxine Pearle Smith, 82, died November 1, 1997 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She was born March 27, 1915 in Scotch Ridge to Austin and Pearle (Sones) Schouler. She married Marvin Smith on March 9,1951. Survivors include : a stepson Dwayne Smith; two sisters, Janet Tholen and Ruth Felton; three step grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. SPITZER

SPITZER, DELORES

Delores Jane Spitzer, 65, died of cancer Dec. 8, 1997 at her home in Kalona.

Delores Yoder was born March 14, 1932 in Kalona to Emma Luella Yoder. She attended Snake Hollow rural school and graduated from Kalona High School in 1950. She was married to Terry Spitzer on June 4, 1960 at the English River Church of the Brethren near South English. Mrs. Spitzer , who lived all her life in Kalona, worked at Farmers Savings Bank in Kalona for 47 years beginning soon after her high school graduation.

She was a member of the English River Church of the Brethren, present chairwoman of the church board, was church treasurer and a Deacon since 1965. Mrs. Spitzer was also a delegate to the annual conference and treasurer for the Northern Plains District, treasurer of the Boy Scouts and Kalona First Responders and a charter member and first president of the Kalona Lioness Club.

Survivors include: her husband, Terry; four sons, Anthony Spitzer of Kalona; Bruce Spitzer of Iola, Kans, Craig Spitzer and David Spitzer, both of Iowa City; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three aunts

Vaughn Irene Thompson, 92, died October 22, 1997. She was born Jan. 16, 1905 in Washington to William and Irene (Warfel) Darbyshire. She married Glen Thompson Feb. 15, 1928 in Washingon. Survivors include: three sons, Victor Thompson, of Columbia, S.C.; Duane Thompson of Cheney, Wash.; and Robert Thompson of Madison, Maine; a daughter Judy Barnaal of Plymouth, Minn; a brother Dale Darbyshire of Wayland; two sisters, Maxine Jarrard of Washington, and Pauline Ohden of Tucson, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 25 nieces and nephews. Evelyn H. Trask, 77, died Oct. 1977 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. She was born Dec. 30, 1919 in Washington County, Iowa to Charles Leslie and Alta (Hamsher) Eyestone. She married Eugene F. Trask on February 10, 1943 in Canton, Mo. Darwin Dale Vacha, 72, died Oct. 19, 1997 in Sun City, Arizona. He was born on February 27, 1925 in Wsashington to Melo and Myrtle Vacha. He married first to Shirley Carris. After her death he married Darlene (Stover) Woods. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; a sister, Kathryn Vacha; a brother, Dick Vacha; his children, Kathy Vacha Burris and Susan Vacha Snyder; Mike Vacha, Jan Vacha Caldwell; nine grandchildren and five stepchildren. Jocelyn "Joy" Wade, 57, died October 24, 1997. She was the daughter-in-law of Evelyn L. McCallister of Washington. She was born in State Center. Survivors include: her husband, Leland Wade; sons, Eric, Greg, and Brian Wade; brothers, Jerry Westphal, Bruce Westfall, Dennis Westphal, and Tim Westphal; and 14 nieces and nephews. WAGNER

WAGNER, Omer

Roy Omer Wagner, 77, Washington, died Dec. 1, 1997 at the Wash. Co. Hosp. after being seriously ill for the past two weeks. Mr. Wagner was born Jan. 25, 1920 in Washington to Lester and Mary (Swift) Wagner. He was raised by Carl and Ruth Schneider. He attended country school and graduated from Washington High School in 1938.

On Feb. 15, 1941 he married Margaret Ellen Lemley.

Mr. Wagner operated Wagner's Sevice Station in Washington from 1952 until his retirement in 1978.

Survivors include: his wife, Margaret Wagner of Washignotn; two daughters, Ruth Ellen Wikinson, of Atlanta, Ga. and M.J. Goff of Minneapolis, Minn.; a son, Ron Wagner of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren/

Weber, Bessie (nee Wingler)

Bessie Weber, 99, died Wednesday, September 24, 1997 at the Lone Tree Health Center following an extended illness. She was born August 25, 1898 in Washington County to James and barbara (Dolezal) Wingler. She married Albert Weber March 1, 1916 in Riverside. She is suvived by four daughters Blanche Prybil, Mame Hotz, LIly Garta, and Ella Kiefer; one sister, Elsie Steele, 17 Grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren.


WENGER

WENGER, Frederick

Frederick Jacob Wenger, 80, died November 21, 1997 in Spokane, Wash. He was born in Washington, served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived in Spokane for the last 45 years and was carpenter, doing primarily residential work. He was active in the Carpenters' Union in Spokane.

Survivors inclue: two sons, Doug Wenger of Seattle, Wash., and Chris Wenger of Port Hadlock, Wash.; three daughters, Susan Sheppard and Linda Kellenberger, both of Seattle, and Elaine Wenger of Spokane; a brother in law, Wilbur Schantz of Washington; a nephew; and four nieces, including Ruth Johnston of Ainsworth and Phyllis Wenger and Joann Love, both of Washington. WESTERMARK

WESTERMARK, Mildred

Longtime former Washington businesswoman and community leader Mildred LeNora Westermark, 83, died Dec. 18, 1997 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

Midred Brown was born Dec. 23, 1913 in Washington to Charles and Pearl (Ayers) Brown.

She attended Washington High School and married Nels B. "Bus" Westrmark in Washington on Jan. 1, 1936.

Mrs. Westermark, who lived in Washington most of her life, was the owner-operator of Brown Finance and Westermark Insurance Agency with her husband. She was recognized as the only woman owner-operator of a small loan office licensed under the state banking department in the state for many years. Survivors include: a son, Jerald Westermark of Washington; a daughter, Karen Myers of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Hilda Putman of Coralville, three grandchildren; a sister in -law and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987, parents and a brother.

WHETSTONE, Caroll

Caroll Whetstone, 62, died October 9, 1997. He was born September 24, 1935 in Wellman to Ervin"Barney" and Alta (Wertz) Whetston. He married Susan Miller, June 30,1957 in Wellman. He later married Lou Hood on October 17,1981 in Johnston County, Iowa. Survivors include his wife, Lou, three sons, Patrick, Jeffrey, and Thomas; a stepson, Bradley Turner; a stepdaughter, Tracy Fisher; a brother, Ervin Whetsone, Jr. and three grandchildren.


WHITTHOFT

WHITTHOFT, Brian W.

Brian W. Witthoft, 20, died November 16, 1997 of injuries suffered in a car-semi accident near Lowden. Mr. Witthoft was born November 20, 1976 in Washington to William and Rhonda (Zehr) Witthoft.

Survivors include: his mother Rhonda Witthoft and her husband Ken Martin of Washington; his father Bill Witthoft and his wife Kay of Washington; a sister, Sarah Witthoft of Washington; a half brother, Dean Clevenger of Richmond, Va.; four step-sisters, Jennifer Shindelar; Katherine Shindelar; Heather and Kendra Martin; two step-brothers, Robert Shindelar and Brent Martin; maternal grandparents Lawrence and Betty Zehr of Washington; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Martha Witthoft of Washington; and several aunts and uncles. WILCOX

WILCOX, Scott

William Scott Wilcox, 95, Washington, died Dec. 3, 1997 at the Halcyon House in Washington. Mr. Wilcox was born March 15, 1902 in Washington to Robert Carey and Carrie May (Portlock) Wilcox.

On June 15, 1927, he married Lorena M. Young in Washington . He later married Alice Hunter on Aug.4, 1962. in Washington.  Mr. Wilcox, who was a lifelong resident of Washington, farmed in the county all his life. He also served as director of Rural schools in the county. In 1954, he was named a Master Swine Producer.

Mr. Wilcox was a member of the United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir for over 50 years. He was also a founding member of the Singing Grandpas, a group that entertained throughout southeast Iowa in the 1970s and 80s.

Survivors include: a son, Robert Wilcox, of Dallas, Texas; abrother, Lyle Wilcox of Washington; a sister, Zoe Kleinbert of Washington; a graddaughter; a grandson; and many nieces and nephews. Wiles, Mae Louise (nee Davis)

Wiles, Mae Louise Wills, 97, died September 27, 1997 at Parkview Manor in Wellman after  along illness. Mae Davis was born May 1, 1900 in Eagle Grove to Jay and Jeanette (Sheriff) Davis She married May 1, 1918 to Henry Christensen in Goldfiels. She later married Israel Wiles on July 27, 1951 in Kahoka, Mo. Survivors include: two sons, Lincoln and Charles Christensen, a sister, Mildred Bascom, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. WOODS, Lucille Ross

Lucille Ross Woods died November 27, 1997 at the Illini Hospital in Silvis, Illinois. She was born February 23, 1911 in Washington to Silas G. and Marie (Ellis) Ross. She married C.H. "Duke" Woods on June 26, 1937 in Memphis, Mo. She taught elementary school for 30 years. Survivors include two daughters, Zilpha W. Grooms and Heather Monson; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on October 9,1993, parents and five brothers. YODER, Donald C.

Donald C. Yoder, 61, Wellman, died Dec. 16, 1997 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a long illness.

Mr. Yoder was born May 2, 1936 near Wellman to Cornelius H. and Eugena J. (Testroet) Yoder. He attended rural schol near Wellman. On July 3, 1958, he married Fern E. Kuhns at the Methodist Parsonage in Wellman. He lived in the Wellman area all his life, worked for Wade Ford Motors in Wellman, Sears and Roebuck in Iowa City for four years, then for the city of Wellman before retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Wellman Fire Department.

Survivors include: his wife, Fern; five children, Deanne Smith, Debra Bender, Kevin Dean Yoder, Kurt Yoder, and Kim A. Yoder, all of Wellman; 11 grandchildren; a brother Marvin Yoder of West Chester; six sisters, Bernice Darnold Malvern; Wilma Rhodebeck of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Leila Stroeh of La Crosse, Wis., Dessel Miller of Iowa City, Margaret Brogla of Coralville; and Janice Wenman of Coralville; and several nieces and nephews. YODER, DRUSILLA (nee Nisly)

Drusilla Yoder, 87, Stuarts Draft, Va. died Dec. 30, 1997 after a lengthy illness. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Kalona, Ia. Drusilla Nisly was born July 30, 1910 in Hutchinson, Kans. to Eli and Fannie (Troyer) Nisly. Mrs. Yoder married Daniel Yoder on Dec. 2, 1934 in Nowata, Okla. He died Dec. 14, 1963. she later married Ben Yoder on Aug. 3, 1972. He died Nov. 8, 1985.

Survivors include: two children, Esther Coblentz of Kalona and Alvin Yoder of Lebanon, Ky.; a brother Eli Nisly of Hutchinson, Kans; a sister Saloma Yoder, of Fisherville, Va.; nine step children; 11 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren sever step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first and second husbands, seven sisters, including her twin, three brothers, one adult son and three infant sons. (Washington Evening Journal, Dec. 31, 1997, p. 10)


YODER, E. Ferne

E. Ferne Yoder, 79,  Wellman, died October 24, 1997. She was born October 1, 1918 in rural Parnell to Christian Wilhelm and Mary (Yoder) Hauber. She married Wesley Yoder at the West Union Mennonite Church on December 25,1938. She is survived by: a son, Elwin Yoder, a daughter Audrey Hartzler, five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. ZILLMER

ZILLMER, Everett

Everett Zillmer, 96, Wellman, died Dec. 16, 1997 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Zillmer was born June 23, 1901 in rural Wellman to Carl R. and Lunde (McArtor) Zillmer. He attended rural schools and graduated from Wellman High School in 1921. He was a farmer and a member of the Dayton Masonic Lodge 149 since 1930 and the El Kahir Shrine.

Survivors include: longtime companion Gertrude Lahey of Wellman; a niece, Virginia Ann Olson of Spencer; and a nephew, Gary Mills of Lincoln, Neb.

ZWICKI

ZWICKI, EMIL J.

Emil J. Zwicki, 99, of Iowa City died October 30, 1997. He was born December 8, 1897 at Kinross to John and Elizabeth (Schwab) Zwicki.

He married Stella Jones on June 25, 1927 in Washington. Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Shaffer and Gladys Nugent, both of Iowa City; a son Jim Zwicki, two brothers Reno and Carl Zwicki, seven grandchildren, and five great, grandchildren.
