Washington County Century Farms

The Century Farms Program began in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial Celebration. It was sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. To qualify there must be consecutive ownership within the same family for 100 years or more of at least 40 acres of the original holding of Iowa farmland, and the present owner must be related to a person who owned the land 100 years ago.
Applications may be submitted by June 1st each year to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. An awards ceremony is held annually during the Iowa State Fair.
As of 2016, there are 202 Century Farms in Washington County.
