1953 History of Hartford School

Log House
Provisions were made for the Hartford school when the town was laid out in 1848. Exactly when the school was established is not known, but records show that first school being held in a log house and the first teacher being John Embree. The log house was made into a dwelling about 1870, at which time a new building had been built for the school.  This building was located almost in the center of the town and to the east of Main Street. The building was two stories high, white frame and had two rooms below and one large room above.  In 1908 the attendance was 67 and the average tuition was $12.56 per year for an eight month term for eight grades.

High School Courses
By 1912 and 1913 there was a movement on foot to consolidate some of the subdistricts and to build a new building and offer high school courses.  Oustanding leaders of this movement were: L. W. Gibbons, H. C. McIntyre, W. W. Gwinn, Bert Pierce, A. P. Myrick, Jim Brown, George Patterson and Otis Shetterly.  Other outstanding community leaders supported the movement.  The districts coming into the consolidation were Brown, Freel, Parsons, Mapleside and Mason.  Switzer district came in later.  The consolidated school opened in 1914 in the old two-story frame building. The two lower rooms were both used and the large room above was divided with a temporary partition to make an extra classroom.  The first year one year of high school was offered; the second, two years; the third, three years; and the fourth year the high school was expanded to a full four-year course of nine months.  From 1914 to 1918 during the building and organization of this consolidation, C. E. Shephard, Carl Millslagle and Robert Ballard were superintendents and Faye Gwinn and Avis McAdoo were principals.

New Building 1917
In 1917 a new brick building was started, being built on a five-acre tract in the north part of town.  It was well-equipped with classrooms for grades, manual training room, domestic science room and large basement gymnasium. The building was furnished and ready to be occupied in January 1918, in time for the first four-year class to attend classes in it. The following years were years of advancement for the Hartford school.  It was well organized and had a high standing in education and athletics.

Addition to Building 1951
In 1951 an addition was necessary to meet the ever-growing demands for education in the Hartford district.  A new brick building adjoining the 1917 building was erected. The average yearly tuition [in 1953] for high school pupils is $283.50 per pupil, and for grade school pupils, $162.50 per pupil.
