Warren County soldiers who served in Iowa Regiments during the
Spanish American War

HISTORY - The Spanish American War between Spain and the United States, lasted 10 weeks in 1898. It was over Cuba's independence from Spain and was fought in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean. On April 25, 1898 the U.S. declared war on Spain after the sinking of the battleship Maine in Havana's harbor. Both Philippines and Cubans fought against Spanish control. On July 16, 1898 Spain agreed to unconditional surrender. The Treaty of Paris was signed Dec 10, 1898 which established independence in Cuba, ceded Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States and allowed the U.S. to purchase the Philippine Islands from Spain for 20 million dollars. 3,000 United States soldiers lost their lives during this war, 90% of them dying from diseases.

IOWA'S TROUPS - The U.S. Secretary of War called upon Iowa for the following units: 49th, 50th, 51st, and 52nd Regiments Iowa Volunteer Infantry; 5th and 6th Iowa Batteries of Light Artillery; 12th Company U.S. Signal Corps; Company M, 7th U.S. Infantry Immunes.
