ALLEN TOWNSHIP

Section 17, Scotch Ridge School House
Land for Scotch Ridge School House No. 2, was purchased on August 10, 1872 from William Smith by School District No. 2, Allen Township. The price was $30.00 and the area of land was 1 ½ acres.

Know all men by these presents that John Wood, attorney for William Smith of Warren County and State of Iowa in consideration of the sum of Thirty dollars in hand and paid by School District No. 2, Allen Township of Warren County and State of Iowa do hereby sell and convey unto the said School District No. 2, Allen Township the following described premises situated in the county of Warren and State of Iowa to wit:
Beginning twenty rods west of the eighth corner between the NW ¼ and SW quarter of [section] seventeen, thence north twenty rods, thence west twenty rods, thence south twenty rods, thence to the place of beginning.  Containing two and one half acres more or less being in Township (77), Range 23 West of the 5 P.M. [Principal Meridian], Iowa. 
And I hereby covenant with the said School District No. 2 that I hold said premises by good and perfect title, that I have good right and lawful authority to sell and convey the same, that they are free and clear of all liens and incumberances whatsoever, and I covenant to warrant and defend the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever.

BELMONT TOWNSHIP

Section 4, North Center School House
Land for North Center School House No. 2 was purchased on April 16, 1873 from Volney H. Freeman & Sarah Freeman by the Independent District of North Center, Belmont Township. The price was $40.00 and the area of land was one acre.The property was to be used for school house purposes, after which time the property would revert back to the owners.

Freeman and Sarah Freeman, his wife, of the County of Peoria and State of Illinois in consideration of the sum of forty dollars, in hand paid by the Independent  District of North Center, Belmont Township of Warren County, and State of Iowa do hereby sell and convey unto the said Independent District North Center the following described premises, situated in the County of Warren and State of Iowa to wit:
Commencing at the south east corner of section four (4), township seventy-five (75) north of range twenty-two (22) west of the 5th Principal Meridian of Iowa, thence west ten (10) rods, thence north sixteen (16) rods, thence east ten (10) rods, then south sixteen (16) rods to the place of beginning being one acre.  The said described land to be used for school purposes and when it ceases to be used for this then to revert to the original owners.
And we hereby covenant with the said Independent District North Center, Belmont Township that we hold said premises by good and perfect title; that we have good right and lawful authority to sell and convey the same; that they are free and clear of all liens and incumbrances whatsoever.  And we covenant to warrant and defend the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever.  And the said Sarah Freeman hereby relinquishes her right of dower in and to the above described premises.

Land for Pleasant View School House was purchased on December 31, 1867 from Elijah O. Lyon & Mary E. Lyon by the District Township of Belmont.  The price was $5.00 and the area of land was one-half acre.The property was to be used for school house purposes, after which time it would revert back to the owners.

Commencing at the south west corner of the south west quarter of section No. Five (5) in Township No. Seventy-five (75) North of Range No. twenty-two (22) west of the 5th P.M. [Principal Meridian] Iowa, thence running east nine (9) rods, thence north nine (9) rods, thence west nine (9) rods, thence south nine (9) rods to the place of beginning containing one half acre more or less, to revert back to Elijah O. Lyon or his assigns when it ceases to be used for school purposes.  And we do hereby covenant with the said District Township that we are lawfully seized of said premises, that they are free from encumbrances, that we have good right and lawful authority to sell the same and we do hereby covenant to warrant and defend the title to the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever.

Land for McMillen School House (later, Motor School House) was purchased on March 24, 1877 from William Adam Wright & Amy M. Wright by the Independent School District of McMillen. The price was $40.00 and the area of land was one acre.

Section 17, temporary School House
An area 64 square rods (about 1/3 acre) was purchased on February 21, 1868 from Archibald N. Henry & Elizabeth E. Henry by the District Township of Belmont to be used for school house purposes for not more than twelve years.  No money was exchanged for the use of this property. This school house was probably used for a short time because the District bought property nearby (in section 18) in 1872 for a school house.

Henry, of Warren County, and State of Iowa in consideration of the same being used as a school house lot by the District township of Belmont of Warren County, and State of Iowa do hereby sell and convey unto the said District township of Belmont the following described premises, situated in the County of Warren and State of Iowa to wit:
Commencing at the south west corner of the south east quarter of the south west quarter of section seventeen, township seventy-five (75) , range twenty-two (22) west, thence running east eight rods, thence north eight rods, thence west eight rods, then south eight rods to the place of beginning, containing sixty four square rods, so long as the same shall be used of said District township for school house purposes by said District township keeping and maintaining on said lot ground a school house the property of the township District of Belmont which shall not exceed twelve years from this date.
And we hereby covenant with the said District Township of Belmont that we hold said premises by good and perfect title; that we have good right and lawful authority to sell and convey the same; that they are free and clear of all liens and incumbrances whatsoever.  And we covenant to warrant and defend the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever.  Signed this twenty-first day of February A. Land for Bethel School House was purchased on June 5, 1872 from John R. Dunn by the District Township of Belmont…. most likely to replace land in section 17 which was used temporarily for school purposes. The price was $40.00 and the area of land was one acre.

 commencing at the north east corner of section twenty-three(23) running thence south with the section line nine (9)rods thence west parallel with the section line eighteen(18) rods, thence north parallel with the first line nine(9) rods east with the section line to the place of beginning, the same being situated in the north east corner of section twenty-three (23) of township seventy-five (75) of range twenty-two (22)west of the fifth 5th P.M. of Iowa.  Said lot to be fenced by said district and we do hereby covenant with the said district township that we are lawfully seized of said premises, that we have good right and lawful authority to sell the same and we do hereby covenant to warrant and defend the title to the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever.

Monfore & Lottie Monfore by the Independent District of McNeer, Belmont Township.  The price was $20.00 and the area of land was one acre. Section 34, school house, replaced with Fairview School in section 33.
An area 6 rods by 40 rods (1 ½ acres) was purchased on November 20, 1866 from James F. Cox & Sidney Cox and James M. Shelly & Louisa J. Shelly by the School Directors of  Belmont Township for one dollar.  This school location was shown on the 1875 map of Belmont Township, Warren County, but replaced by the Fairview School House in section 33 on the 1887 map of Belmont Township, Warren County.

For the consideration of one dollar, we, James F. Cox and Sidney, his wife, and James M. Shelly and Louisa  J., his wife, hereby convey to the school Directors of Belmont township, Warren County, Iowa and their successors in office the following tract of land to wit:
 commencing at the south-west corner of the north-east quarter of the north-west quarter of section thirty-four (34) township seventy-five (75) range twenty-two (22) west, thence east forty rods thence north six (6) rods thence west forty (40)rods thence south six (6) rods to the place of beginning for the purpose of using same for school purposes and if at any future time it should cease to be used for such purposes, the said land to revert to us.  In the county of Warren and state of Iowa and we the said James F. Cox & wife and James M. Shelly & Wife warrant the title against all persons whomsoever.
 In witness whereof we have hereunto signed our names this twentieth day of November, eighteen hundred and sixty-six.

GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP

Section 5, Willis School House
Land for Willis School House was purchased on February 14, 1876 from Eleazar Andrews and Sarah Andrews by the District Township of Greenfield.  The price was $10.00 and the area of land was ¾ of an acre, to be used for school house purposes, after which time the deed would be null and void. This school was named after Thomas Willis whose house was across the road, west of the school house, owning 80 acres of land in section 6 in 1897.

Know all men by these presents that we, Eleazar Andrews [and] Sarah Andrews, his wife, of Warren County and State of Iowa in consideration of the sum of ten dollars in hand paid by the District Township of Greenfield of Warren County and State of Iowa do hereby sell and convey unto the said District Township of Greenfield the following described premises situated in Warren County and State of Iowa to wit:
Beginning at the south west corner of section five  (5), Township seventy-seven (77), Range twenty-four, thence north eleven (11) rods, thence east eleven (11)rods, thence south eleven rods, thence west eleven (11) rods to the place of beginning. Containing three quarters of an acre more or less, provided as follows that as soon as said plat of ground shall cease to be occupied for a District school, then in that case this deed shall be null and void.
And we hereby covenant with the said District Township of Greenfield that we hold said premises by good and perfect title, that we have good right and lawful authority to sell and convey the same, that they are free and clear of all liens and incumbrances whatsoever, and we covenant to warrant and defend the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever. And the said Sarah Andrews hereby relinquishes her right of dower in and to the above described premise.

Section 17, Lowe School House
Land for Lowe School House was purchased on November 14, 1871 from Abram N. Good & Rebecca Good by the District Township of Greenfield.  The price was $50.00 and the area of land was one acre. “These premises to revert back to the owner whenever not used for school purposes by his paying fifty dollars without interest and paying for the improvement.”  This school was named after Thomas Lowe who owned 79 acres of land on the east and north sides of the school in 1897.

One acre of land in the south west corner of section seventeen (17) Township seventy seven (77) range twenty four (24) west.  Commencing at the section corner, running east sixteen (16) rods, thence north ten (10) rods, thence west sixteen (16) rods, thence south ten (10) rods, to the place of beginning.  And we do hereby covenant with said district township that we are lawfully seized of said premises, that they are free from encumbrances, that we have good right and lawful authority to sell the same, and we do hereby covenant to warrant and defend the title to the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever, these premises to revert back to the owner whenever not used for school purposes by his paying fifty dollars without interest and paying for the improvement.

Know all men by these presents that we, I. S. [Isaac S.] Surber and Margaret Surber of Warren County and State of Iowa in consideration of the sum of Twenty-five dollars in hand paid by School board of the Township of Greenfield of Warren County and State of Iowa do hereby sell and convey unto the said Township board the following described premises situated in Warren County and State of Iowa to wit:
Three quarters of an acre being eleven rods square in the north east corner of the east half of the south west quarter of section twenty-six, township seventy-seven, range twenty-four west, when not used for school purposes it is to fall back to the original, also it is expressly understood that the said J. S. Surber and his successors is always to have the full privilege of adjoining to said fence around said lot. 
And we hereby covenant with the said School board that we hold said premises by good and perfect title, that we have good right and lawful authority to sell and convey the same, that they are free and clear of all liens and incumbrances whatsoever, and we convenant to warrant and defend the said premises against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever, and the said Margaret Surber hereby relinquishes her right of dower in deed to the above described premises.

Kaufman & Louisa "Lou" Kaufman from the District Township of Greenfield.  The price was twenty five dollars and the area of land was still ¼ of an acre, so long as it was used for school house purposes and afterwards revert back to these grantors.

Commencing in the middle of the Indianola and Knoxville road on a line running north and south through the middle of the S. E. quarter of the N. E. quarter of sec. 29 of township 76 north of range twenty three (23) west of the 5th P.M. [Principal Meridian] Iowa.  And running thence north twenty (20) rods, thence east eight (8) rods, thence south parallel with the west line of said tract, to the center of said road, to the place of beginning and containing one (1) acre more or less.  The conditions of this lease are such that the said District township shall erect and keep in good repair a good and lawful fence around the said premises and shall have and hold the said premises so long as the said District Township shall use the same for the special purposes above named.  And when the said District township shall cease to use said land for special purposes aforesaid, they shall forfeit all right and title to the same to the above named grantors and to his heirs and assigns.

Later the school was moved south, across the road.  At that time land for Hewitt School House was purchased on November 24, 1884 from the estate of  Moses H. Hewitt (deceased, to complete a contract made by Moses H. Hewitt in his true life) by the District Township of White Oak.  The price was $1.00 and the area of land was still one half acre.
