Coal Mining Fatalities in Warren County

State Archives Indexes at the State Historical Society of Iowa, Des Moines, now include a mining fatalities index for all of Iowa. With this index, biennial reports of the state mine inspectors were searched at their Research Center to compile the following coal mining fatalities for Warren County. FRANK RASPOTNIK – Apr 3, 1957
Cororner’s Report & Record, Carlisle, Warren County, Iowa, April 3, 1957, Frank Raspotnik who has been removed from the S & R mine following a slate fall. Coroner, R. C. McGeehon, M.D., Frank Raspotnik, age 65, address - 2717 Logan, Des Moines, IA, nativity – German, naturalized, spouse – Antonizo Raspotnik. Having heard testimony as hereto appended we are of the opinion that Frank Rasotnik died of accidental means. A contributing factor may have been his own negligence in placing and maintaining adequate props in the area in which he was working. We find no evidence of negligence on the part of the owner, operator or others.

David Shearer, killed January 15, 1885, the said jurors upon their oath do say that David Shearer came to his death by the accidental falling of a trap door, at the Indianola Mining Company’s coal shaft, of Jan 15, 1884, and that said accident was not owing to the criminal negligence of any one, so far as we can determine. CHARLES WINCHELL – Sep 30, 1903
Charles Winchell, a driver in the employ of the Black Diamond Coal Company, was instantly killed on Sep 30, 1903. He was blasting coal when slate fell, crushing him and killing him instantly, source – 12th Biennial Report of the State Mine Inspectors for the Two years ending June 30, 1905 to the Governor of the State of Iowa, p. 62

ENOCH WIGHTHOUSE – Dec 27, 1882
Enoch Wighthouse – The jurors, upon their oaths, do say that the said Enoch Wighthouse came to his death by a fall of slate, in a room worked by himself, in the Watson Coal Company’s mine at Ford, Iowa, on Dec 27, 1882; and that, in our opinion, that same was accidental and not caused by the negligence, carelessness, or fault of any one.
