Van Syoc Cemetery

VAN SYOC CEMETERY is located in the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 14 of Belmont Township. It is four miles east of Milo, Iowa, on paved road G58. The pavement turns south, but continue east one-half mile on the gravel road. The exact address is 23497 Nixon Street.

Aaron Van Syoc and his family lived in Belmont Township. During the late summer and early fall of 1861, Aaron, his son Simeon, and his daughter-in-law Mary J. Cook and her infant, died. The family gave one acre of ground to be used for a cemetery. The four graves are marked by one monument.

After the deaths, Mrs. Van Syoc moved her family to Knoxville and later to Henry County, Iowa. No one else was buried at Van Syoc Cemetery. Eventually the cemetery was fenced, and the ground around it was farmed. The cemetery is cared for by the descendents of Aaron Van Syoc.
