Plainville or Goode's Chapel Cemetery

PLAINVILLE OR GOODE'S CHAPEL CEMETERY is located in the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 32 of Belmont Township. Go out of Milo, Iowa, south for three miles, then turn east for one and three-quarters mile.

John F. Goode and his wife, Elizabeth Walton Goode, came from Ohio to Iowa in 1854. They lived on a farm just west of where the Goode Cemetery is now located. Mr. Goode ran a general store in Milo. Two of their young children died and were buried in the family garden. Since John grieved so much, his father, Rev. Joseph Goode, said he would see that a cemetery was laid out if John would donate the land.

John Goode donated four acres of land for the cemetery. The two children were moved to the new location. Three other members of the Goode family were also moved to the cemetery. They were Louisa Kimzey Goode, deceased wife of Frank Goods, her two-day-old child, and an older child. They had perviously been buried in a field on their farm. Two children of a family passing through the area had also been buried in the field. The graves of these children were left in the field and are now lost.

John F. Goode deeded the land for Goode Cemetery and it was started for family and friends. Upkeep was through donation. Now the Cemetery is under the jurisdiction of the Belmont Township.

Goode Cemetery is the churchyard cemetery for the Goode Christian Union Church which was organized in 1863. The church building was erected in 1867 at a cost of $1,500. The church is often referred to as Goode's Chapel.

A small stone marked R.P. lies in Goode Cemetery. It marks the grave of Ruben Proctor, who was originally buried, according to Legend, at Lacy Cemetery in Belmont Township.

An interesting fact is that the Rev. Joseph Goode was a Circuit Rider.
