My name is Stephen Burgess, in Rogers, Arkansas, and I wanted to tell you how NICE volunteer lookup, Mary Lanigan is !! I recently aquired an image of a Civil War Veteran wearing his GAR badge,and the photo was taken by Townsend in Iowa City, Iowa. The name penciled on the back was Charles Birnbaum. I was able to find that he served in the 36th Iowa Infantry, and was in Arkansas during the war, and that was about all. After getting her email from your website, I wrote to Mary and asked if she could help me any further. Folks, she filled in all my blanks !! Discovered that Mr. Birnbaum had actually moved to Arkansas after the war, and was residing in Hot Springs, in 1880, and much more. I was totally thrilled, and that photograph has a special place in my Veteran Images collection now. To sum up, Mary Lanigan is SUPER !
