WILLIAM RUCKMAN

The above picture represents the aged veteran, William Ruckman, thirty three years after the close of the war. With his estimable wife and gifted family he is enjoying the blessings of a free country he valiantly defended. As a soldier and as a citizen Wm. Ruckman has lead a life and set an example worthy of imitation. He resides on a farm near Afton and is honored and respected by his fellow men. William Ruckman was born in Richmond Co., Ohio, in 1839. Was a farmer boy. In 1861 he enlisted in the 32nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private. On August 10th the regiment was sent to Wheeling, West Virginia. From there they cleaned the valley up to Cheat Mountain the first fall. They were on the mountain all winter. In '62 they went over the Alleghany and up the Shenandoah to Fort Republic, there they were sent back to Winchester, Va. to build fortifications from there to Harper's Ferry. Were surrendered by Col. Miles in '62, paroled and sent back home.
