B. T. NIX
B. T. Nix, the subject of this sketch was born in Ohio county,
Kentucky, September 15, 1840 and is 58 years old. When the Civil war
broke out, he being a native of Kentucky, was forced to take sides
for there was no neutral ground to occupy. On the 3~d day of August,
1862, he enlisted in Co. B, 32nd Ky. vol. inf. as a recruit for nine
months. On the organization of the company was elected captain. This
regiment operated principally in Kentucky, guarding railroads against
Gorilla Bands participating in several engagements in Kentucky, with
John Morgan, Zollicoffer, Kerby Smith and others. At the expiration
of his term of service was mustered out with his Co., but immediately
re-enlisted the company, filled it to one hundred and one men
re-entered the army as Co. D. 53rd Ky, Mounted Inf., and continued in
the service until the war was over in the fall of 1865. Served with
this regiment in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee was on the famous
Saltville Raid and other numerous engagements. Much ot the time
fighting Gorilla Bands, the most dangerous and hazardous kind of
warfare. In October, 1868 he came west to Iowa locating in Clarke
County, near Woodburn in 1870. In 1875 moved to Platte Township,
Union County and in January, 1881 moved to Afton where he now resides
on a beautiful farm adjoining the city. As a soldier and as a
citizen, Capt. B. T. Nix has ever been a typical American. No captain
was ever more beloved by his company; no citizen was ever more
respected by his fellow citizens.
