G. D. NEWCOMB

G. D. Newcomb was born of English parentage who settled near Boston Mass. about the year 1663, he is of the eighth generation born in this county. His grandfather William Newcomb was in the war of 1812 and he served in the army of the Rebellion three years and nine months. G. D. Newcomb was in Co. I, 62d Ohio Vol. Inf., was promoted to corporal in 1862, was promoted to first sergeant in October, 1862, was discharged and re-enlisted as a veteran Jan. 1st 1864 was promoted to orderly sergeant in October 1864 and had command o the company seven months before being mustered out August 25, 1865. He participated in the following named battles: Winchester, Va., March 23, 1862. Harrison's Landing, July 4 1862, Black Water, Va., December 13, 1863, Siege Morris Island, July 18, 1863, where he was severely wounded in the left shoulder, Petersburg, Va., June 9, 1864, Watthall Junction, June 17, 1864, Strawberry Plains, Va., August 15, 1864, Deep Bottom, Va., August 18, 1864, Chaperis Farm, October 7, 1864, Deep Run, August 9, 1864, Darbey Town Roads, October 13, 1864, Hatches Run, November 18, 1864, Fort Gregg, April 6, 1865. He lead the company on the skirmish line at Appamattox Court House, April 9, 1865. Had a musket ball shot through his pant's leg near the right ankle and through the skirt of his coat at Lee's surrender. He enlisted December 11, 1861, and was discharged August 21, 1865. He resides at Creston, Iowa, 608 West Montgomery St., and is a member of T. J. Potter Post, 440 G.A.R.
