JOSEPH DEAVER

W. J. Deaver was a member of the signal corps under the command of Jesse Merrell, head signal officer. He enlisted December 12, 1862 at Morgan couniy, Ohio. For a long time he was stationed at Washington, D. C. but in February 1864 he was ordered to Hilton Head, South Carolina, from there to Charleston and witnessed the evacuation of that city. He remained at Charleston until August 21, 1865 being discharged at the close of the war. He is now a farmer residing near Afton and during the past year the Grim Messenger has entered his home three times taking a devoted wife and two children.
