Looking for information regarding the last years of life of my great-great grandfather, Conrad HETZEL, who appears in the 1900 census of Union County. In that census he was living at 809 S. Cherry with his daughter Mary, her husband, Clarence Jolly, and their son, Aubrey, who was born in May, 1898. I know the following about Conrad HETZEL: He was born in Wuerttemburg in November, 1833 and emigrated from Germany to the US in 1852. He was in Henry County, Iowa in 1860 and in Ringgold County in 1870 and 1880. He was a widower in 1900; his wife Mary passed away in April, 1881 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Poe Township, Ringgold County. The 1880 census shows 4 children; the 1860 census shows 5 different children. One of those 1880 children is my great-grandfather, also named Conrad HETZEL, who was born in 1866 and died in 1963. His obituary says that he lived all of his life in Ringgold County- except for a short time when he lived in Creston. I know he was married in Creston in 1892. There's an Aubrey JOLLY in the Social Security Master Death Index who was born in May, 1898 and died in November, 1990. The geography in his record is Washington State. Could the entire family have moved to the Pacific Northwest? I would like to find out when and where the senior Conrad HETZEL died and where he is buried. An obituary might answer a lot of the questions I have about him and his other children. Thanks- Jay Wight Hoffman Estates, IL Jaywight2@aol.com

PECK, Sylvia Alice - was supposed to have been born in Afton, Union Co., IA on 12 July, 1865. I am trying to find informaiton regarding her parents, siblings, other ancestors, etc. If you have any PECK family information, during this time-frame, please send me email. By 27 Sep., 1881 she was in Saline Co., KS where she married George Washington STOCKTON. Sylvia and George had only one son, Fred Alvin. After Sylvia and George divorced, Sylvia called Fred Alvin a Peck, which he went by for the rest of his life. All his descendants are surnamed Peck to this day. I am helping a cousin search for information about her ancestors. Thanks in advance for any help. Hello from Ottumwa, I am researching my husband's family, and have discovered he had relatives residing in Creston at one time. There was an Esther Swanson who attended the Larson/Swanson reunions in Ottumwa. I have a clipping for sure of 1954. However, in 1926, a clipping states: Mr. and Mrs. August Swanson, and children, Walton, Bernard, Eleanor and Esther Lorraine of Creston. Therefore, this family must have resided near Creston for several years. Do you have obits of any Swansons for this time period 1926-1950's? Also, any obits of my ancestors, Garrett? School will not be completed this year until June 9, then I would like to drive to Creston, Chariton, and maybe Mills County to do some research. Any suggestions of what is available, time availability, and where/how to research would certainly be appreciated. Thanks. Judi Swanson Ottumwa

BALLARD, Silas. Reportedly born in Afton. His children included Fred and Frank (twins), Will and Walter (twins), Martin who had a twin sister, and one set of twin sisters. Martin was born in 1870. Silas had a brother described as Captain Charles Ballard with an Iowa vounteer regiment, who died in the Civil War battle of Springfield and is buried in Springfield Missouri. Silas must have been an early settler, as family lore describes his home having a tunnel built for protection in event of Indian attack. Martin was my GGfather. Would appreciate any information on this family. Bob Bales. (bobbales@aol.com)

I am looking for information about TED WHITEHEAD & family, who lived at Lorimor, IA at the time of his death in October of 1983. I only know that he was my father's 1st cousin & was the son of Dr. Ellis & Ruth (Dowding) Whitehead. I don't know how long he lived in Lorimor or what he did there -- perhaps if anyone knew him or I could somehow locate his obituary, it would help in tracing his family. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am working on the surnames of MESKIL and SICKLES in Union County Iowa. I would like to find anyone that also has these surnames in their family lines. Michael MESKIL Sr. was b: Oct 1836 or 1837 in Ireland. I believe his parents were John Meskil and Hannorah? I have found him listed on the 1900 census in Creston IA. It lists him as being a section forman for the railroad, and as being widowed. His son: Michael MESKIL Jr. b:Sept 1 1856 in Iowa d:Aug 28 1919 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Creston IA. He was married abt 1883 to Udora Catherine SICKLES. On the 1900 Union Co. census it shows Michael as living on W. Union St. and his occupation is a railroad laborer. I would like to find a record of this marriage. Udora became ill at about the age of 21 and the their two boys were sent to St. Vincents Home in Davenport, Scott Co. RIDGWAY, OLIVER. My grandmother, Martha Rebecca Ridgway (or Ridgeway) was born in Afton, Union Co., Ia. in 1877. Her parents were Caleb William Ridgwayand Mary Cathrene Oliver Ridgway. They apparently moved to Illinois after 1877 since the next child, Franklin Brockman Ridgway, was born in Ill. and then back to Union Co., Ia. by 1888 since another child Clara Auguata Ridgway was born back in Union Co. Caleb's parents were Dr. John Ridgway and Martha. Mary Cathrene's parents were John Oliver and Rebekah Lloyd, but I don't know if they lived in Union Co. Would love to have any information about the family. Martha Walker mlwalker08@aol.com
