This family story is about how the first Barnet Bonar happened to come to America. It seems that he, his widowed mother, and 2 brothers were living on a rented piece of land a short way from Endinborough. It seems on a day while walking back from Edinborough, Barnet met an English tax collector leading the only thing the Bonars really owned, namely a heifer cow. It seem the English landlord who owned the property refused to pay the taxes so the tax collector took the only thing he could off the farm. The result of this meeting between Barnet and the tax collector was Barnet by force somehow repossessed their cow. As a result Barnet took the heifer into Edinborough and sold it for enough money to get the first ship out. After he settled in Harve De Grace, Maryland he sent for his two brothers and mother to come over. |

Cecile Eva (Bonar) Grant died at Indianola, Nebraska age 24yrs. 4mos. 17days |
The story was passed down that Vernon Grant left his pragnant wife, Cecile and two small |
daughters, Helen and Francis with Cecile's mother, Minnie Bonar, while he went to look for work. |
Though she barely had enough to feed herself, Minnie took them in with open arms. Cecile, the |
mother she was, refused food so that her daughters would have more to eat. This left both Cecile |
and her unborn child so malnourished they both died when the baby girl was born. Dorothy Loux, |
sister of Cecile, found homes for Cecile's little girls. Frank and Sylvia Goddard adopted Helen, |
and Sel and Mary Smith adopted Francis. Sylvia and Mary were sisters. Dorothy requested they |
let the girls spend a lot of time together and to grow up knowing they were sisters. Helen and |
Francis spent a lot of time in the home of their aunt Dorothy and uncle Code, and Dorothy went to |
see them often. Though the adopted fathers told Vernon Grant he could see the girls anytime he |
wanted, in 1995 neither of the girls remembered ever having seen him. |
