Miller, Mary Ann - ANOTHER AGED CITIZEN ANSWERS FINAL CALL

Mrs Mary Ann Miller, one of the old pioneers of New Market and vicinity, who has been in poor health for several months, passed away last Saturday, Feb 11, 1928, at her home in New Market.

Mrs Miller was another of those grand old mothers who reared a large family of children of whom she was always proud. She was one of the early settlers, being the first white baby born in Page county, and was also a charter member of the M.E. church of New Market. Her death is mourned by a large circle of the older settlers who knew her as a kind and loving neighbor and friend, always willing to extend a helping hand in times of sorrow and trouble.

Mary Ann, daughter of Jerry and Elizabeth Teeters, was born in Page county, Iowa, April 17, 1846. She was called to her final reward from her home in New Market Feb 11, 1928, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 24 days.

On September 18, 1865, she was united in marriage to Johnathan H. Miller. To this union were born eight children, six of whom are still living. Albert and Walter having died in infancy. Those living are Sadie E. Stearns of Gravity, Jerry of Blue Springs, Neb., Vida E. Owen of Coin, Dallas C., Semmer B. and Hazel G. Savage of New Market. She is also survived by one brother, Dan Teeters, of New Market.

About fifty years ago Mrs Miller united with the M.E. church in which she retained her membership until she answered the Master's call. She was a kind and loving mother, always looking for the good of her children. She has been a constant sufferer for about seven months.

Mrs Miller leaves to mourn their loss six children, one brother, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the M.E. church in New Market, conducted by Rev C.F. Smith, assisted by Rev Dewey, pastor of the Baptist church.

Burial was made in Memory cemetery.

 

Miller, Dallis Clyde, the son of John Henry and Mary Ann Miller, was born May 13, 1879, at New Market, Ia. He passed away at his home in New Market, Feb 19, 1941, at the age of 2 [sic] years 9 months and 6 days.

Mr Miller was united in marriage on July 11, 1906, to Lola Reynolds.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, and son Lowell; three sisters, Mrs Sadie Stearns of Gravity, Ia, Mrs Vida Owen of Coin, Ia, Mrs Hazel Savage of New Market, Ia; two brothers, Jerry Miller of Braddyville, Ia, Semmer Miller of New Market, Ia, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, Feb 20, 1941, from the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda, with Rev Rowe in charge.

 

Teeters, Daniel, son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Teeters, was born May 22, 1863 and departed this life July 8, 1936 at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 16 days.

He was united in marriage to Miriam Emmaline Raynor, December 27, 1891. To this union four children were born: John, Frank, Mrs Elva Hoffman and Lizzie, a daughter who preceded him in death. He is the last one of a family of 12 children and spent all of his life in or around New Market.

He leaves to mourn his departure his widow, three children, 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends.

Rites were held from the Baptist church in New Market, July 10, conducted by the Rev Shackelford.

Interment was in Memory cemetery.

 

Miller, Minnie Gertrude Sanders Coston - Minnie Gertrude Sanders, daughter of Thomas J. and Ida Sanders, was born July 8, 1880, in Holt County, Mo., in the Harmony neighborhood, where she grew to womanhood and departed this life at her home near New Market, Iowa, Jan 3, 1935, at the age of 54 years and 6 months.

She was married to Eugene Coston April 17, 1898. To this union seven children were born: Mrs Flossie Lockhart, Wetmore, Kans., Lester and Lloyd of Skidmore, Mo., Mrs Florence McGinness, Clarinda, Dallas of Maitland, Mo., Glen and Walter of New Market.

She lived near Maitland and Skidmore until 1929 when she moved to her home.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1920, and her father in 1932.

April 17, 1930, she was married to Semmer Miller of New Market. Besides her husband and children, she leaves her mother; two brothers, Charles Sanders of Giltner, Nebr., and Milbern Sanders of Rapid City, S.D.; one sister, Mrs Vernie Bartram, Skidmore, Mo., and ten grandchildren besides other relatives and friends.As a mother, no more self-sacrificing and devoted ever lived. As a neighbor none was more kind. She became a member of the Christian church in Skidmore, Mo., in 1921.

The funeral services were held at the Walker Funeral home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev B.F. Hall, pastor of the Church of Christ at Clarinda. Interment was in Old Memory cemetery. Pallbearers were Carl Wells, Dennis McAlpin, Ed Ruck-[obit cut off]

 
Stearns, Alonzo Lewis, son of Otis and Malissa Stearns, was born in Berrien county, Mich, February 13, 1861, and died at his home south of New Market March 22, 1938, at the age of 77 years, 1 month, and 9 days. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth Miller April 10, 1888. He leaves to mourn his death his wife and six children, Iva Cunningham of Bedford, Glen of Arapahoe, Nebr, Ethyl McMahill of Gravity, Albert of Maryville, Mo, Russell of Gravity, Robert of New Market, and Charlie, who died in infancy, 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, one brother, Tom, of Buchanan, Mich, 2 half sisters and 3 half brothers a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at his home south of New Market Thursday, March 24, by the Rev C.K. Shackelford.
 

Stearns, Mamie S. Hamilton - Mrs Glen Stearns died at her home two miles south of Arapahoe [Nebraska] on Monday forenoon after an illness of three weeks. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereafed husband and three little children. On account of the family being quarantined for scarlet fever no funeral services were held. Short services were conducted at the cemetery by Rev M.C. Galloway of the Methodist Episcopal church and the Rebekahs, the Rebekah brothers acting as pall bearers.

Mamie S. Hamilton was born July 1, 1893 at Bedford, Adams Co [sic, Taylor Co], Iowa. She became a member of the Christian Church at Bedford, Iowa, when she was fifteen years old. She was graduated from the Bedford high school in 1911 and taught school one year. She was married to H.G. Stearns at Bedford, Iowa, August 4, 1912. To this union were born three children; Mahlon Dallas, age 8, Virginia Ruth, age 4, Sara Marie age 21 days. After an illness of three weeks she died at her home near Arapahoe, January 14, 1924 at the age of 31 years, [blank] months and 14 days. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, three children, her mother and three brothers, Howard S. Hamilton of Fairbault, Minn; Leon R. Hamilton of Bedford, Iowa; Mahlon S. Hamilton of Maryville, Mo; and four sisters Mrs C.C. Chapman of Arkansas City, Kans; Marilla Belle Hamilton of Omaha, Nebr; Mrs Harl Fuller of Conway, Iowa, and Violet Hamilton of Omaha, Nebraska.

A precious one from us has gone

Scott, Jane Hammond Jenks, was born October 22, 1843, in Piqua, Ohio and departed this life September 11, at her home in Blue Springs, Nebr at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 20 days. Her father died at the home when she was three years old.

When a girl of twelve years she moved with her mother and stepfather near Clarinda, in Page county, Ia., where she grew to womanhood.

On April 2, 1865 she was united in marriage to James Edward Scott. To this union were born four daughters and four sons. Her husband and two daughters and three sons preceeded her in death.Those left to mourn her passing are Mrs Lillie Irelan of Blue Springs, who cared for her in her declining years, Mrs Jerry Miller of New Market, Ia., and George W. Scott of Glenwood, Ia., twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren, one brother-in-law in Iowa, nieces and nephews and a host of friends to mourn her passing.

At an early age she became a christian and remained steadfast in her faith to the end. In complying with her wish funeral services were held from the home Friday afternoon September 13, at 2:30, Rev King her pastor in charge, assisted by Rev E. E. Powell. Interment was made in the Blue Springs cemetery by the side of her husband.

 

Scott, Martha Jane, daughter of Nelson D. and Mariah A. Crosby, was born in Brighton, Iowa, on Oct 31, 1873 and passed from this life into the life beyond, on Aug 26th, 1934, aged 60 years, 9 months and 25 days.

She was married to George W. Scott on Dec 6, 1891. To this union were born four children, Anna May, who died at the age of six years, Roy A. of Pacific Junction, Ray E. of Waterloo, Iowa and Ralph C. at home.

She leaves one sister, Mrs Anna Hook, of Grundy Center, Iowa, one brother, Frank Crosby, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and two half brothers, Chas A. Anderson of Shambaugh, Iowa, and Otto L. Davis of Blue Hill, Nebraska, also, two daughters-in-law and two grandchildren, and other relatives and many friends to mourn her departure.

She was converted in the year 1891 and sanctified wholly in the year 1923.

At the time of her going she was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Glenwood, Iowa. She was a teacher of a class of junior girls in the Sunday Bible school and often expressed her regret that she was not physically able to care for the work she so dearly loved. Since the latter part of November she has not been able to meet with her class.

Since Jan 10th she has been confined to her home.

The body was interred in the Memory cemetery at New Market, Iowa, by the side of the grave of the daughter who died many years ago.

The funeral service was held in the Raynor Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev Mrs D.W. Dobson, assisted by Rev D.W. Dobson, pastors of the Church of the Nazarene.

A brief service was held at the grave for the benefit of relatives and friends from that community.

 

Brown, Harry Bercaw, son of Benjamin Patterson and Margaret Alice Brown, was born in East River Township, Page County, Iowa, August 15, 1859; departed this life at Fremont, Nebr, June 22, 1940, aged 80 years, 10 months, and 7 days.

He received his education and grew to manhood in Page county, where he was united in marriage with Miss Lillie Rosetta Kelley on July 4th, 1885.

About 1894, Mr and Mrs Brown moved to Rushville, Nebr, where they made their home until the death of Mrs Brown, November 20, 1931.

Mr Brown was a faithful member of the Masonic Lodge in Rushville for a considerable period of time during their residence there. The Fremont Chapter of that organization conducted the Masonic ritual at a brief funeral service held in Fremont, Nebr.

Mr Brown is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his only sister, Mrs Eva Brown Wilfley, who was the wife of Henry Wilfley of East River township. He is survived by two nieces, Mrs Jessie Wilfley Bailey and Mrs Ida Beavers, and Mrs Jerry Miller of Braddyville, and a nephew, George Scott of Glenwood, Iowa, as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda Tuesday at 10 a.m. by the Reverend W. Frank Lister, pastor of the First Methodist church. Interment was made in Clarinda cemetery.

 

Wilfley, Henry, oldest son of David and Martha Ann Wilfley, was born January 23rd [1850] at Platte City, Missouri, 14 miles south of Saint Joseph. When he was a child of 2 years, he came to Page county, with his parents, to visit relatives; then in 1861, during the Civil War the family moved to Page county to establish their home here. With the exception of 3 years spent in California, where he worked as a young man in a sawmill, and a short period spent in Clarinda, Mr Wilfley spent all the remaining years of his life on the same farm in East River township, 3 1/2 miles southeast of Clarinda.

On January 31st, 1875, he was united in marriage to Eva H. Brown. Two daughters were born to them: Mrs Jessie (Frank) Bailey of East River township; and Gertrude Viola, who pased away on October 24th, 1918, at the age of 38 years. Mrs Wilfley also preceded her husband in death many years ago in 1888.

Mr Wilfley was greatly interested in his life-time occupation of truck-gardening and fruit growing. Strawberries were his specialty. He was also a lover of sports, especially hunting and fishing. Many years ago he united with the Baptist church in Clarinda, which was located where the St John's Lutheran church now stands. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge in Clarinda for a period of years.

About a week before his death, Mr Wilfley became ill with influenza. He was taken to the Clarinda Municipal hospital, and passed away there on Sunday afternoon, April 6th, 1947, at 1:10 o'clock. He had reached the advanced age of 97 years, 2 months and 14 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing his daughter, Jessie; his brother, Tom, of Clarinda; one niece and four nephews, and many neighbors and friends.

Funeral service was held April 8th at the Foster-Harmon mortuary, Clarinda, burial in the Clarinda cemetery. The Reverend W.W. Bentzinger of the Clarinda Methodist church officiated. Hymns: "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "In the Garden", by Aletha Hutchings and Doris Forbes. Pall-bearers were Paul Hughes, Elmore Ferguson, Oliver Krouch, Orville Ferguson, Herb Hamm and Don Hartman.

Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs Eva Hughes and Mrs Ollie Ferguson.

 

Wilfley, Henry - Clarinda's oldest citizen, Henry Wilfley, who was 97 years of age last January 23, died at the municipal hospital Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock.

Being much younger in activity that his age would indicate, Mr Wilfley has continued his truck farming, working with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Frank Bailey. Things he touched seemed to grow better than for others, and he continually had choice fruits, berries and vegetables to sell [----ly] every summer.

Henry has been [a] resident in this vicinity since Civil War times. The family lived at Platt City, Mo, where Henry was born, and in 1862 or 63 they came to Iowa because of war conditions. Tom Wilfley of Clarinda is a surviving brother.

Funeral service will be Tuesday for the pioneer, to be at 2:30 at Foster-Harmon Funeral home in charge of Dr W. W. Bentzinger. Burial will be in Clarinda cemetery.
