Death of Rev Edward Otis

Died, on Friday, September 1st, 1882, at the residence of Mr Beauchamp, four miles and a half north east of Hopkins, Mo., Rev. Edward Otis, the the 66th year of his age. Elder Otis was born on the 28th of September, 1816, at Sanderville, Tuscarawas county, Ohio, where he grew to man's estate and was married to Miss Kitty Ann Gatrell, on the 19th of May, 1836, some time after which he removed there about three years and then removed to Hayden Grove, Taylor county,Iowa, we believe, about the year 1856, and continued to live there until his death. He was converted when only sixteen years of age and it is related of him that he received his baptism at the hands of his grandfather, Rev Edward Otis, in a mill pond on which the ice was so thick that it bore the entire congregation which had assembled to witness the ordination. He was ordained a minister in the Regular Baptist church in 1861 and has ever since been engaged in the work, preaching to one congregation, the Union church at Ball's school house in Taylor county, for seventeen successive years. For a number of years past he has been suffering from the disease of which he died and about a year ago had an unusually severe attack which well-nigh proved fatal. He however did not permit his ill health to interfere with the performance of duty, and on Saturday, August 26th, went down to the Union church to fill an appointment there. He was taken ill while preaching but continued his task and completed it. A little later in the day, while at Mr. Beauchamp's for dinner the attack became so serious that he was obliged to lie down and never rose again, but died on the following Friday, at twelve o'clock. He leaves surviving him a wife and nine children, all of the latter being grown and a number of them married and having families in this county. The funeral took place on Saturday last at Hayden Grove, where he had so long lived, the services being conducted by Elder Cloud of Corning. His remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of friends who mourn him as a father and among whom he had labored for twenty-two years. The East Nodaway Baptist Association, of which he was a member, was in session at the time of his death and passed appropriate resolutions relative thereto, which will be found in the proceedings of the association in another column.
