Henry, Doyle Richard was born to Robert and Alice Webb Henry on May 6, 1913, on the family farm near Bedford, Iowa. He died at the Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on July 29, 1995 at the age of 82 years, two months and 23 days. Doyle grew up on the farm where he was born, attended country school, and graduated from Bedford High School in 1932, where he excelled at football. He also liked to play baseball and was a member of the Cockleburr Ridge Baseball Team. His love of sports continued throughout his life. He was married to Phyllis Mae Thompson on January 12, 1941, at the Methodist parsonage in Maryville, Missouri. They lived in Doyle's boyhood home until it was destroyed by fire in 1954 and another house built on the site. To this union two daughters and three sons were born: Julia Marie, Phillip David, Sharon Kay, Clifford Allen, and Kenneth Eugene. Doyle farmed all of his life on the family farm near Bedford which has been in his family for over 100 years and to which he was deeply attached. He delighted in the out of doors. He was an ardent hunter and fisherman and a member of the Conservation Club. He raised thousands of game birds and waterfowl, releasing many of them to the wild. Articles about his conservation activities appeared in Outdoor Life and The Des Moines Register. Among Doyle's many interests was identifying and raising wildflowers, especially native wildflowers. He was also a dedicated gardener and was able to enjoy gardening until the last few days of his life. During the winter months he practiced taxidermy, at which he became quite skilled. Doyle enjoyed flying and qualified for a private pilot's license in the mid-1940's. He passed on his love of the out of doors to his sons and inspired one of them, Clifford, to become a pilot. Surviving to honor his memory are his loving wife, Phyllis Henry of Bedford, Iowa; two sons, David and his wife Dorothy of Sturgis, South Dakota, and Clifford and his wife Jackie of Cambridge, Iowa; two daughters, Julia Johnson and husband Timothy of Los Angeles, California, and Sharon Wiseman and husband Larry of Bedford, Iowa; one sister, Arlene Tyner of Salt Lake City, Utah; two grandchildren, Robert and Stephanie; and one great grandchild, Seth. Preceding Doyle in death are his parents; a son, Kenneth, on June 19, 1995; two sisters, Lola Eckles and Dorothy John; and four brothers, Elvon, Beryl, Carroll and Hubert. Doyle will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. A memorial service was held August 4, 1995 at the United Methodist Church in Bedford, Iowa with the Rev Paul Evans officiating. Thompson, Sarah Geneva - Mrs Geneva Thompson, 84, of Clarinda, died Thursday morning, August 10th, at Community Care of Clarinda. She was born January 22, 1911, in Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Mattie Wilson Bordner. In 1929 she was married to Paul Gorton. Later she married Bernhard Johnson who preceded her in death in 1961. She married Charles Thompson and he died in 1987. Mrs Thompson worked at Berry Seed Co and later operated the State Line Cafe and Junction Cafe in Bedford with her husband, Bernhard (Jug) Johnson. In Clarinda she worked for Crouch Trucking and was manager before the terminal was closed. She was a longtime member of the Clarinda First Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Charles Gorton, and wife, Saundra, of Kensington, MD. Grandsons are Scott and Stuart Gorton and great grandchildren are Rebecca and Bradley. Also surviving is one sister, Eleanor Benjegerdes of Manley, Iowa. Margaret Beemer of Bedford is a cousin. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and one brother. Hawhee, Howard - Funeral services for Howard Henry Hawhee, 60, of New Market were held Mar 19 at the New Market Methodist Church conducted by Rev George White. Mr Hawhee died March 16 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Masonic service was given by Covenant Lodge A.F. and A.M. No 453 with interment at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Howard Henry Hawhee, son of Mr and Mrs Clem Hawhee, was born on a farm near New Market, Iowa, December 19, 1907. He attended rural school at Hawleyville and graduated from New Market High School. He was married to Mable Penwell, March 2, 1929. They were the parents of four sons; Gary of Denver, Colo., Rev Gale of Ocheydan, Iowa; Bill of Bedford, Ronald, who died in infancy. He was also preceded in death by his father and brother, Louis. Howard farmed in and around Page and Taylor counties all of his life. He joined the Methodist church during his youth. He was a member of the Masonic Covenant Lodge No 453 and the Order of Eastern Star. He always took great interest in his family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he was always interested in the young people of the neighborhood. He was a good neighbor and a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Mable; Gary, Gale, Bill and their families; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Hyldred Haarstick and Marjorie Chase; his mother, Martha Hawhee, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Hawhee, Louis - Funeral services for Louis Dillin Hawhee, 59, lifetime Taylor county resident were held Sept 20 at the Siam Church with Rev Carl Newquist officiating. Mr Hawhee died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital Sept 17, 1964 at the age of 59 years one month and nine days. He had been in failing health for a year and was hospitalized only five days prior to his death. Interment was at the Hawleyville Cemetery. The following obituary as included in the services. Louis Dillin Hawhee, son of Clem and Martha Dillin Hawhee, was born near New Market, Ia., August 8, 1905. He great up in the Hawleyville community; attended grade school there; attended New Market High school and graduated with the class of 1924. He taught school one year at "Old Memory." He attended church and Sunday school at Hawleyville where he joined the church at an early age. He attended church whenever he was able. He was united in marriage to Ruth Fleck at Red Oak in 1929. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; six children, Mrs Lloyd (Madylene) Huntsman, Mrs Lloyd (Joan) Compton, Earl Hawhee and Don Hawhee, all of Calif., Mrs Doyle (Janiece) Hamilton of Des Moines and Janet at home; his mother, Martha Hawhee; two sisters, Hydred Haarstick, Mrs Franklin (Marjorie) Chase; one brother, Howard Hawhee; 14 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. His father preceded him in death in 1945. Louis was a loving husband, father and brother; a kind neighbor and friend to all who knew him. Hawhee, Martha - Funeral services for Mrs Martha H. Hawhee, 92, of Clarinda were held at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda January 23 with Rev John Beebout and Rev George White in charge. Mrs Hawhee died at West Heights Manor in Clarinda January 21, 1970. Interment was at the Hawleyville Cemetery. Martha May Dillin was born near Ireland (Dubois Co.) Ind., January 11, 1878. She was the daughter of Thomas and Lucinda Greene Dillin who were pioneers of Dubois Co. She was the youngest of 12 children. She attended country school until she graduated then attended school at Ireland Normal School at Jasper, Ind., and Oakland City College at Oakland City, Ind. She taught six years in the county schools, was converted while young, joining the Cumberland Presbyterian Chuirch at Ireland. Later when it united with the Presbyterian Church she became a member of and become active in church work. On Oct 20, 1904 she was married to Clem Hawhee. Five children were born Louis Dillin, Hyldred Helen, Howard Henry, Marjorie Mildred, Duward Clem who never opened his eyes to this world. After coming to Iowa she joined the Methodist church at Hawleyville and became an ardent and devoted worker there as long as she lived in that community. She was superintendent of Sunday School for 16 years and Ladies Aid president for many years. She has been a kind and loving mother; her family always came first. Her parents, sister and brothers, husband, three sons, Louis, Howard and Duward preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Hyldred with whom she made her home and Marjorie Chase; 13 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren; son-in-law Franklin and daughters-in-law Mabel and Ruth; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Everything was done that was humanly possible during her illness, she was cared for in the home for five years, the last three months in the nursing home. Hawhee, Clem S. - Clem Sherman Hawhee was born July 2, 1880, and died at his home July 9, 1945, at the age of 65 years, 7 days. He was left an orphan when a baby and was cared for by his aunt and uncle, Will Hawhee until he was 13 years of age. From that time on, he made his own way in the world. He united with the Baptist church at New Market when a young man, later he joined the Methodist church at Hawleyville. He was married to Martha Dillin of Ireland, Indiana, October 20, 1904. To this union five children were born, one died in infancy. Besides his wife, four children survive; Louis Dillin of Hopkins, Mo, Hyldred Harrstick; Marjorie Chase of Clarinda, and Howard Henry of Bedford, and twelve grandchildren of whom he was very fond. The funeral was at the Walker Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev Warren W. Bentzinger, pastor of the Methodist church. Miss Letha Hutchings and Mrs Doris Forbes sang. Casket bearers were: Howard and Louis Hawhee, Franklin Chase, Walter Haarstick, Chas Boyd, Harold Hakes. Flower girls were Opal Noble, Chrystal Pratt and Ruby Doyle. Beck, Wilma Lorene - Funeral services for Wilma Lorene Beck were held Monday, Sept 19, at Larkin & Shelley Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev Al Rusk of the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church and Rev Tim Maxa of Lenox United Prebyterian Church officiating. Casket bearers were Bill Scott, Steve Basler, Alan Goodson, Lloyd Hamblin, Leonard Knott and Rollie Boltinghouse. Music was provided by Dave Brown and Norma Paymal. Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery, with Larkin & Shelley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials are to Green Valley Hospice. Wilma Lorene Beck, daughter of John and Millie Brown Cox, was born April 8, 1925 in Blockton. She passed away on Sept 16, 1994, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston at the age of 69 years, 4 months and 24 days. Lorene was raised in the Blockton area and graduated from Bedford High School in 1944. On July 9, 1945, she was united in marriage with Donald W. Beck in Blockton. They had one son, Donald E., and a daughter, Sheryl. Lorene was a full-time farm wife and homemaker. She was a member of the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church for over 40 years. Survivors include her husband, Donald W. Beck of Lenox; daughter Sheryl (husband Herb) Schroder of North Little Rock, Ark; son Donald E. (wife Connie) Beck of Lenox; grandchildren Heather and Bradie Schroder and Natasha Beck; brothers Lewis Cox of Bedford, James Cox of Bedford, Vernon Cox of Bedford and Clifford Cox in Lincoln, Neb. Larison, Beulah - Funeral services for Beulah Larison, (the aunt of Beverly Thornton), age 86 of Bedford, who died Thursday, May 11, 2000 at the Clearfield Nursing Home were held Monday, May 15, 2000 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Bedford with Pastor Jamie Mogler officiating. Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be directed to the Bedford Ambulance. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford. Beulah Bernice Larison was born September 12, 1913 in rural Taylor County, Iowa. She was the daughter of James Enoch Larison and Sarah Elizabeth Ulrich Larison. God called her home to glory on May 11, 2000 at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 29 days. She lived with her family on their farm near Bedford until 1941 and she attended the Helm Rural School in Taylor County. She graduated in 1929 from the Bedford High School. She furthered her education at the college in Maryville from 1929 to 1931. In 1946 Beulah granduated from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal State at Long Beach, California in 1960 and her Master's Degree from the same institute in 1963. Beulah taught rural schools in Iowa for seven years. In 1941 she moved to Galion, Ohio to live with her sister Ethel and family. She worked two years for North America Electric as a secretary and then taught Released Bible Time Classes in Ohio schools for two years. In 1948 Beulah relocated to California where she taught school from 1948 until her retirement in 1984. Beulah was a teacher for a total of forty-three years. From 1984 until 1994 she resided with her dear friend Millie Postiff in independent living at the Atherton Baptist Homes. Because of declining health she returned to Bedford in July 1994 and lived with her niece and husband John and Beverly Thornton for three years. She entered the Clearview Nursing Home in June of 1997 and remained there until her death. According to her written testimony she was a church member for many years before she understood the real meaning of trusting Christ for her salvation. In 1941 she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and from that time on was a faithful church member serving her Lord Jesus Christ. At the time of her death she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford. During her adult life she taught both children and adult Sunday school classes. She was a lifelong member of the P.T.A. in California and active in local and state teacher's organizations. Beulah always stated it was her desire in life to know Christ better. Beulah is survived by her brother, Wilbur D. Larison of Twin Falls, Idaho. In addition, Beulah's nieces and nephews and their families were her delight. She leaves James Larison and his wife Betty of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Dorothy Perry and her husband Cletus of St Marys, Kansas; Marian Fern Gines and her husband Evan of Tagna, Arizona; George W. Larison and Donna Beulah and her husband Al of Twin Falls, Idaho; Beverly Thornton of Bedford; Don Williams and his wife Brenda of Clarinda, Iowa. Also surviving are many great nieces and nephews as well as many friends in California. Preceding Beulah in death were her parents, sisters Ethel Wilson, Ina Fern Williams, infant sisters Eva May and Edith; brothers, Elmer and Wade Larison and infant brothers, Edmond and Evert. Her last words to her niece Beverly in the final hours of life on earth were "tell others ye must be born again" and "tell my loved ones to read John 3" to know what a wonderful God we have. Clarinda Herald-Journal, Nov 29, 1984 - Word came to Opal McDonald that Cloy L. Hicks died at his home Nov 1 after a brief illness. He was born Oct 22, 1896 at Gravity, the son of Alvinia and Berl Hicks. He graduated from the New Market School and married Jessie Ferguson on July 21, 1920 at Shambaugh. They moved to Iowa City in 1937 and he worked as a mechanic for the University of Iowa until he retired in 1966. He is survived by his wife Jessie, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A son and a granddaughter preceded him in death. Graveside services were held at the Memory Gardens at Iowa City. |
Francis M. Manley son of Jonathan and Mary Manley was born at Eddyville, Monroe county, Iowa, May 10, 1860, and departed this life at his home east of Siam Monday, May 15, at 8:45 am aged 79 years, and 5 days. At the age of 8 years he came with his parents to the Siam community where he has since resided. He was one of a family of nine children, viz: Andy, Eliza, Jasper, Alonzo, Mrs Mary Etta Clayton, Maggie Croshaw, Martha and Charles, all of whom have passed on except Charles who now lives at Barnard, Mo. On October 28th, 1880, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Sabina Ramsay at Hopkins, Mo. Mr and Mrs Manley established their home one half mile south of Siam and here their family of six children were born, Elza, Grover, Mary, Walter, Golda and Silas. The family later moved to their present home east of Siam. In early life Mr Manley was converted and placed his membership with the Church of Christ at Siam where for many years he was a loyal worker. In Nov 1918 the family circle was broken by the death of their son, Walter, and on October 13, 1923, the Death Angel again entered the home, taking the faithful wife and mother. On Oct 21, 1926, Mr Manley was united in marriage to Mrs Mary Crystal Clayton. Mr Manley was a home loving, honorable, upright man, a kind husband and father, a good citizen and a loyal friend. Orville Manley, a grandson, who was reared in the home of his grandparents since at the early age of about 4 years, was an inseparable companion of his grandfather and thru a long and serious illness he and his faithful grandmother and aunt, Mrs McNinch, kept loving watch over him and attended his every need. Those left to mourn their loss are his devoted wife, Crystal Manley, five children, Elza of Blockton, Iowa, Grover of Siam, Mrs Mary McNinch and Mrs Golda Catuska of Lincoln, Nebr., and Silas of Cherokee, Ia. 4 grandchildren are Mrs Pearl McGurk of Lincoln, Nebr., Francis Manley of Blockton, Wilbur Manley of Clarinda and Orville Manley at home; one brother, Charles Manley, of Barnard, Mo and a host of relatives and friends who are grieved by his passing. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm at the Church of Christ in Siam by the Rev Max Buck of Bedford. Interment in Siam cemetery. Pall-bearers were Frank Shields, Fred Melvin, Arthur Stickelman, Cecil Woldruff, Ira Roberts, and Floyd Sprague. Chauncey H. Webster, son of Joseph and Mary Webster, was born in Delaware, Ohio, Dec 25, 1852, and departed this life on January 22, 1943, at Municipal hospital in Clarinda, Iowa, at the age of 90 years and 28 days. He came to Iowa in 1875 and spent most of his life in Page and Adams counties. On Dec 25, 1877, he was married to Elizabeth Hutchison, who died on November 18, 1941. To this union were born, Charles Webster of Denver, Colo.; Earl Webster of Corning, Iowa; Mrs Ola Barnes of Gravity with whom he made his home the last two years of his life; and Mrs Jennie Masker who died April 17, 1941. He was a member of the Hazel Dell Christian church. His failing health would not permit much activity the last few years of his life, but he contented himself reading, which he was able to do to the last. The funeral service was held Sunday at a funeral home in Corning, at 2 o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev F.J. Funeral services for Thomas E. Woods were held May 18 at the Community Church of Athelstan with Rev Ward Campbell officiating. Mr Woods died May 15, 1971 at Ringgold County Hospital in Mt Ayr. The Blockton American Legion Post No 443 held military rites at the Athelstan Cemetery. Thomas Elmer Woods, son of David and Cora Downing Woods, was born in Taylor county [Iowa] January 27, 1904. Tom grew to adulthood in the Athelstan Community area. He was called into the army in 1942. In 1947 Tom was united in marriage to Iva Heck. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, father, mother, one sister, Jessie Woods Booher, one brother, Charles and two brothers-in-law, George Booher Sr and Clyde Schuster. Since the death of his wife, Tom lived one year with a sister, Mrs Letha Schuster, and two years with a brother, Ben of Lenox. Tom is survived by his two sisters, Mrs Letha Schuster of Blockton and Mrs Mary Howard of Tulsa, Okla; three brothers, Ben of Lenox, Fred of Blockton and Floyd of Audubon, Ia; two sisters-in-law, Ester Woods of Audubon and Violett Woods of Lenox; one brother-in-law, Tillman Howard of Tulsa, Okla; a number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends. New Market - Our community was shocked Saturday noon, when the word reached town that Grant Cooper had died at his home two miles east of town. He had been bedfast but a few days with typhoid fever, having kept up as long as posible to wait on his wife, who has been very sick for several weeks. The funeral was held at the Methodist church at Gravity, Sunday afternoon. Sunday his father, J. Cooper died from the same disease and was buried Monday afternoon, the funeral services were held at the Dallas Center church and interment in the Dallas Center cemetery. The sorrowing family certainly have the sympathy of the entire community. Another son and brother Walter Cooper, having died of the same fever about a month ago. |
Mrs Amanda R. Cameron widow of the late Kendall Cameron passed to the great beyond Sunday morning after an illness of several months. She had been a resident of this community for some thirty years and was loved and respected by all. She was always a good friend and neighbor ever ready to lighten the burdens of others. She will be greatly missed in the community. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at her late home, conducted by Rev R.C. Snodgrass. Interment in Dallas Center cemetery. Amanda R. Phillips was born in Van Buren Co, Iowa Sept 9, 1843 and died at her home in New Market, Iowa, Aug 7, 1921 aged 77 years 10 months and 29 days. Her mother died when she was but a young girl and she assumed the cares of the home and taught school inthe neighborhood. She was married to Kendall Cameron Nov 14, 1865 at Keosauqua, Iowa, near which place they resided for a few years, then moved to Dallas County, Iowa where they resided until 1892 when they came to Taylor County. Mrs Cameron was the mother of eleven children, seven of whom remain to mourn their loss. They are: Edwin S. of near Des Moines [Iowa], Anna I. McColm and Carra E. Lathrop of New Market, J.Ray near Bedford, Clyde L. who lived at home with his mother, W.K. of Lincoln [Nebraska] and Phil E. of Casper, Wyo., all of whom were present to pay the last tribute of love to the mother who had loved and cared for them so tenderly during their childhood and through the intervening years. In early life she was converted to Christ and always kept the faith and lived a true conscientious christian life. About 18 years ago she united with the Church of Christ at New Market and was an active member until her ill health prevented service. About 13 years ago she had a serious sickness from which she never fully recovered. She was a patient sufferer during the years of her affliction, always cheerful, hopeful and loving. Besides her children she leaves a sister, Mrs Editha Fatherson of Mt Sterling, Iowa, and a brother, Dr Frank Phillips of Dallas, Texas, and a host of friends and neighbors who loved her as a mother. Masters, Mary J. Semple - Funeral services for the late Mary J. Masters were held Friday afternoon at the Walker Funeral Home, conducted by her pastor, Dr A.B. Thutt. Mrs James Scroggs and Mrs Wilma Anderson sang appropriate selections, accompanied by Carrie Loranz. Interment was in the cemetery at Gravity, beside the grave of her late husband, John B. Masters. The pallbearers were Harley Pearson, George Livingston, Ernest Cuttell, Jas. G. Scroggs, Arlo Hawley and Clarence E. Boone. Relatives present from a distance were Mrs Eddie Shultz of Shenandoah and daughter, Marguerite Masters, also Dorothy Ray of Des Moines. Mary J. Masters was the only daughter of Robert and Anna Semple, born Feb 25, 1851, at Leroy, McLean county, Illinois, and passed away June 14 [1934] in Clarinda, at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 19 days. United in marriage to John B. Masters at Peoria, Ill, on March 25, 1875. The next May the couple came to Iowa, where she has since lived. Four sons and two daughters were born to this union, W.C., Jessie M., Robert S., David D., Gertrude L., and John B., three sons having died, and the husband passed away. Those left to mourn their loss are Mrs Jessie Ray of Gravity, Gertrude L. of Omaha, and John B. Masters of Clarinda, also one brother, J.B. Semple of Chicago, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and many other neighbors and friends. Mrs Masters united with the Methodist church early in life, living quietly in her faith, loving the duties of life, a devoted mother and good neighbor. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge, also of the Order of Eastern Star of Gravity, until failing health compelled the giving up of those activies. |
Hensley, Iva - Funeral services for Mrs Iva Hensley, 94, of Clarinda, were held March 2, 1984 at 1:30 pm at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev John Clark officiating. Interment was in Clarinda. Mrs Hensley died Tuesday evening at Bedford Manor Nursing Home where she had been a patient for the past three years. She was born September 24, 1889, at New Market, the daughter of David and Anna Ward Hankins. In 1910 she was married to Jim Hensley who preceded her in death in 1965. They lived in Taylor County until moving to Clarinda in 1948. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs Elvin (Maxine) Campbell of Clarinda, one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Grover Hankins of Shenandoah is a brother and Frederick Handorf of Bedford is a son-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Lucille Handorf, one sister and two brothers. Handorf, Helen Lucile Hensley - Funeral services for Mrs Frederic (Lucile) Handorf, 68, of Bedford, held November 26 in Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda, were conducted by Rev Carl Cummings. Mrs Handorf died November 23, 1979 in Memorial Hospital in Red Oak. Interment was at Memory Cemetery near New Market. Helen Lucile Hensley Handorf, daughter of James A. and Iva Hensley, was born July 7, 1911 at Filer, Idaho. The family moved to Siam, in Taylor County, Iowa, in the fall of 1912 where she attended school and graduated from Bedford High School in 1929. She taught in the rural schools in Taylor County for 23 years, 16 years in the Bedford Community School, the last 13 years in special education. On March 11, 1939 she was united in marriage to Franklin Jobe and they made their home in Siam. They moved to Arizona and lived one year due to his health. He died August 6, 1942. She was also preceded in death by her father James A. Hensley. Following the death of her husband she resumed teaching. On May 5, 1945 she was united in marriage to Frederic Handorf and they lived on the farm at Siam until November of 1977 when they moved into their new home at Bedford where they have continued to reside. She was a member of the United Methoidst Church at Siam. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Frederic of the home; her mother, Iva Hensley, a sister Mrs Elvin (Maxine) Campbell and her husband; a niece, Bonnie Fengel; brother-in-law, Floyd Handorf and his wife of Clarinda and his son Don of Ames; sister-in-law, Mrs Orville Woods, and her husband of New Market; sister-in-law Mrs Carl Drinkhouse and her husband of Littleton, Colorado; sister-in-law, Mrs Audrey Johnson, of Denver, Colorado, and her son Gary of Nelsonville, Ohio; other relatives and many friends. Brooks, Mary E. Seward, formerly a resident of New Market but for the past few years a resident of Conway [Taylor County, Iowa], passed away Tuesday afternoon at Conway after a short illness. The body was brought to New Market [Iowa] Tuesday night and cared for at the Walker & Shum furniture store. Mary Elizabeth Seward was born in West Virginia June 1, 1856 and passed away April 5, 1932, at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 4 days. She was united in marriage to Chas Brooks in 1878 and to this union ten children were born, three of whom proceded her in death. She is survived by seven children: Mrs Maggie Day of Hubbard, Minnesota Mrs G.E. Fitch of Clinton, Iowa Mrs W.W. Campbell of Conway, Iowa Mrs David Anderson of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois Mrs A.J. Wallace of Shoshone, Wyoming Willie Brooks of Bedford, Iowa Floyd Brooks of Canada Also one sister, Mrs Kate Frazer of Des Moines, Iowa and twenty grandchildren. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Baptist church, Rev E.L. Osborn officiating. Burial was made in Memory cemetery. Darnold, Arthur James, the fourth son of James W. and Elizabeth Mullinax Darnold, was born in Louisa County, Iowa, August 20, 1867, and passed away November 7, 1943, at his home north of Malvern, Iowa, at the age of 76 years. He was married to Cora M. Combs December 23, 1891, in Taylor County, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: Rosa N. Smith, Coin, Iowa; Osta Meade, King City, Mo; Floyd Jay Darnold, Malvern, Iowa; Myrtle M. Jerrell and Cora M. Taylor, Los Angeles, California. One son died in infancy. They spent 16 years on a farm in Taylor County, Iowa. Cora M. Combs Darnold died June 17, 1908. On April 23, 1930, he was married to Mary Jane Smith. To this union were born five children: Doris Louise, Dollie Lucille, and Arthur James, at home, two dying in infancy. He also leaves three stepsons and one step-daughter, Armond Smith, Malvern, Iowa; Mrs John Rogers, Shenandoah, Iowa; Pvt Paul Smith, southern Pacific; Pvt Clarence Smith, northern Africa; Lenord Lee Smith at home. He also leaves three brothers, Robert Lee Darnold, Olrich, S.D.; George B. Darnold, Lincoln, Nebr; Edward Lewis Darnold, Council Blufffs, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends. He was a member of the Methodist church. Myrtle and Cora were unable to be here. The services were conducted by the Rev John Turner, Silver City, Iowa. He was laid to rest beside his wife and small son at Guss, Iowa. Pallbearers were his four grandsons and two step-sons: Walter A. Smith, Harry G. Smith, Ernie E. Smith, Merle McComb, Armond Smith and Lenord Lee Smith. |
