Marckmann, Robert -
Charges
of vehicular homicide were filed in Taylor County Magistrate Court on Monday
against Danny Schoen, 37, in connection with an
automobile
accident that led to the death of Lenox resident Robert Marckmann.
Lenox
Police Chief Daniel Griffith reported that the accident occurred at 2 a.m.
Sunday morning. A pickup truck driven by Schoen apparently veered left, struck
a tree, then struck Marckmann, who was a pedestrian.
The pickup struck another tree after striking
Marckmann,
according to the report. Chief Griffith indicated that investigating officers
did not know exactly where Marckmann
was
walking at the time of the mishap.
The
accident occurred in the 600 block of South Walnut in south central Lenox. Marckmann was pronounced dead at the scene, according to
Chief Griffith, while Schoen suffered leg injuries and lacerations and was
taken to Greater Community Hospital in
Creston.
Late
Monday afternoon, Schoen was released from the hospital and was transported to
the Taylor County Jail in Bedford.
Chief
Griffith would not comment on whether or not alcohol was involved, but Taylor
County Attorney Ron Bonnett reported that blood tests
taken from Schoen had been sent to the state crime laboratory.
Schoen,
age 37, was a newcomer to Lenox. Driving records obtained by this newspaper
indicate that he previously had drivers licenses
from
Wisconsin and Minnesota. His driving record also indicates that he had been
convicted on two occasions, once for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and
another time for failure to consent to a sobriety test. He previously had one
driver's license suspended and another one revoked, according to the driving
record obtained.
Law
enforcement officials suspect that Schoen did not have an Iowa driver's
license. The charge of vehicular homicide is normally a class D felony with
maximum imprisonment of five years. Bonnett indicated
that the charge could be enhanced to a class C felony
with
maximum imprisonment of 10 years if driving while intoxicated is proven to be
among the causes of the accident.
Involved
in the accident investigation were the Lenox Police Department, the Iowa
Department of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa State Patrol and the Taylor
County Sheriff's Department.
Services
for Robert Marckmann, 31, of Lenox are scheduled for 1:30
p.m. Wednesday at the Christian Church in Lenox. Rev. Max Nelson will officiate
the service. Burial will be at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.
A
