Herbert
Cross passed away Jan. 18, 1992, in Oregon, Wisconsin.
His
wife is the former Carolyn Ambrose, daughter of the late Amos Ambrose and Doris
Wray Ambrose, formerly of
Lenox.
Carolyn
is the granddaughter of Lizzie Ambrose and niece of Lucille Davis and Joseph
Ambrose.

Drorbaugh, Harry J (Bob) -
Harry J. (Bob) Drbrbaugh was born on a farm near Kent to Elizabeth and
Harry M. Drorbaugh on October 5, 1920.
He
attended the Kent School until 1930 when the family moved to a farm east of
Lenox. Bob became a member of the Lenox
United Methodist Church at this time.
He
was graduated from Lenox High School in 1938. Bob worked on farms in the area
until he entered the service.
He
served in the military from 1944 until 1946. While in the service of his
country in Japan, he was awarded the Asiatic Theater
Ribbon
Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. Bob was a lifetime member of
the VFW.
On
May 28, 1957 he was married to Marjorie Cartwright in Omaha, Nebraska. To this
union one daughter, Vallerie, was born.
Bob
worked as a fireman on the Burlington Railroad and they made their home in
Glenwood, Iowa.
In
1962 Bob and his family moved to Creston, Iowa, and he continued his work on
the railroad. He was an engineer at the time of his retirement.
Bob
worked several part-time jobs in Creston after his retirement. His most recent
was as a greeter at WalMart This job suited him well
for he enjoyed visiting with his many friends as they came into the store.
After
a very short illness, Bob passed away suddenly at his home on December 17,
1991. He was preceded in death by his two sons by
a
previous marriage, Marvin Lee and Bobbie James; and his parents, Elizabeth and
Harry M. Drorbaugh.
Surviving
him are his wife. Marjorie of Creston; his daughter Vallerie of Omaha; and his son, Jerry Cartwright, wife Carol, and daughter Laura of
Omaha.
Bob
is also survived by three sisters. Mrs. Dayton Hucke (Thirza) of Clarinda; Mrs. Allen Hall (Le Ota) of
Denison and his twin sister, Mrs. Donald Wilson (Betty) of Corning; as well as
a number of nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

Hegwood, Leland Allie -
Leland
Allie Hegwood, 78, Lenox, died February 7, 1992 at
Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services were held Tuesday
at
the First Christian Church in Lenox with Revs. Max Nelson and Don Fisher
officiating. Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery in
Lenox
with military rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 250.
Mr. Hegwood was born May 21, 1913, in Taylor County to Alia and
Josephine (Gordon) Hegwood. He graduated from Lenox
High School in 1931. He married Dorothy Symonds May 1, 1944 in Des Moines. He
was employed by United food Store for several years and went to work for the
Postal Service in 1951, retiring in 1975. He was a lifetime resident of Lenox.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion Parkinson Post
No. 250, Tremont Lodge No. 250, Tremont Lodge No. 343 AF&AM, Lenox Golf and
Country Club and Southwest Iowa Senior Golfers. He served four years on the
Lenox City Council.
Survivors
include his wife, Dorothy Hegwood of Lenox; sons Phil
(wife Diane) of Urbandale and Bob (wife Jane) Hegwood of Conifer, Colo.; six grandchildren; and a sister, Erla Barker of Lenox.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Erma Wilcox; and a brother,
Lester Hegwood.

Kilby, William J (Bill) -
William
J. (Bill) Kilby, age 68, of Halfway, Oregon, passed
away Wednesday, Dec. 18 at his home. Mr. Kilby has
been taken to Idaho for cremation. A memorial service will be held on Saturday,
December 21 at 1 p.m. in the Halfway VFW Hall. Interment will be in the Pine
Haven Cemetery at a later date.
Bill
was born July 14, 1923 in Lenox, Iowa to Leslie James and Mayne Sererne Kilby. He graduated
from Lenox High School in
May
of 1941. Following high school he entered the Navy on Jan. 22, 1943. He served
his country on the USS New Jersey during WW
II.
He received the victory medal. He also served during the Philippine Liberation
and earned the Philippine Liberation medal with
two
stars. He was discharged on Feb. 19, 1946.
Bill
and Louise Margaret Simmons were united in marriage in Concord, Calif., Nov.
28, 1950. They had 3 children, Les,
Connie
and
Jeff. Bill retired from the California school dist after 20 years of
distinguished service on July 31, 1978. After retirement
they
moved to Greenleaf, Idaho where Bill was employed as an accountant at the Idaho
State School and Hospital for 9½ years.
He
retired in Aug. of 1987. They officially retired 5 years ago to Halfway,
Oregon. Bill has been in failing health for the last 3 years.
Bill
loved to fish and enjoyed all sports. He was a member of VFW Post 7847 of
Halfway, Oregon.
He
will be greatly missed by family and friends. Giving up was not in Bill's
vocabulary and he was wonderful to the end.
He
is survived by his wife Louise of Halfway, Oregon, his children; Leslie James Kilby of Boise, ID., Connie Kilby Curt and
her
husband Randy of Loma Rica, Calif., and William Jeffrey Kilby of Nampa, ID. His grandchildren: Tammy, Ashley and Lindsey Curt.
He
also leaves 3 sisters and 3 brothers.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister.

Lockhart, Alice Bolte -
Alice
Lockhart of Lenox, age 83, died at Mercy Hospital in Corning on Dec. 23, 1991,
after a lengthy illness. Funeral services
were
held Dec. 27 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Lenox, with Rev. Don
Fisher officiating. Burial was at East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox with Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
She
was born Jan. 29, 1908, in Wheatland, Wyoming, to William and Sophia Bolte.
Alice
was married to Thomas Lockhart on March 15, 1930, in Villisca.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, who died in 1972; three brothers
and a sister.
Survivors
include son Robert of Lenox; daughters Mary (Mrs. John) Borland of Lenox;
Mercedes (Mrs. Mike) Richarte of Clovis, Cal.;
six
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Alice
was a longtime resident Lenox and entered the Lenox Care Center in 1988. She
was a member of the United Presbyterian
Church
and Salome Chapter OES.

Maharry, Cecil -
Cecil Maharry,
age 101, died at Mercy Hospital in Corning on January 16, 1992 following a
stroke. He was born in Adams County,
Iowa near Mercer Center July 21, 1891 to Martin Biggar and Jenny Cooke Maharry.
In
1910 when he was 19, his family moved Co Green River, Utah. Cecil returned to
Iowa and in February, 1914, married Elizabeth Robison. She died of diabetes in
December, 1915. In March, 1917, he married Mary Pearle Hewitt. To this union
three sons were born: Gerald, Leland and James. In 1954 Pearle passed away of
cancer. In May, 1962, he married Nellie Jones Bryant. She passed away in 1983.
Cecil
was a farmer and livestock man all of his life before retirement. In 1918 he
and Pearle purchased the farm three miles north of Clearfield in Platte
Township, Taylor County, Iowa, and he resided there until 1962 when he married
Nellie and they lived in Lenox. After Nellie's death he entered the Lenox Care
Center in 1984 and that was his home until suffering a stroke on hursday, Jan. 9, 1992.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, his three
wives, a granddaughter and a great grandson.
Survivors
include sons Gerald of Lenox, Iowa, Leland of Johnson City, Tenn. and James of
Whittier, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.
Cecil
spent his 100 years in Adams and Taylor County, Iowa, except for the two years
spent in Utah. He was a faithful member of the United Presbyterian Church of
Lenox. He was well known and liked by all who knew him.

McDonald,
Forrest Wayne -
Forrest
Wayne McDonald passed away January 19, 1992 at the Omaha Veterans Hospital.
Memorial
services were held Tuesday, Jan. 21 at the Christian Church in Lenox with Rev.
Max Nelson officiating. A private family burial will be at a later date in the
Moon Cemetery in Macksburg, Iowa.
He
was born April 3, 1931 in Afton to the late John and Viva McDonald. He attended
school in Afton. Wayne was a Korean War Veteran. After two years of active
duty, he returned to Creston and became an employee of the Anderson-Erickson
Dairy Company for
several
years. Later he moved to Lenox doing carpenter work until his health failed. He
was a member of the Parkenson Legion Post 250 of
Lenox.
He
leaves to mourn his passing: wife Betty; three daughters: Diane (husband Mark) Wingo; Susan McDonald of Longmont, Colo.; Brenda
(husband
Timothy) Clayton of Grose Point, Mich.; two sons:
Christopher (wife Diano) of Peabody, Kansas; Rodney
(wife Margaret) of Longmont, Colo. Three step-sons: Walter, Joseph and Benjamin
Meir and one step-daughterm Catherine Badey. Fifteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and
three step-grandchildren; four sisters, Eleanor (husband Gale) Hammans, Ruby Dibel, Bonnie (LaVon) Pulliam of Phoenix, Ariz,
and Leona (husband Ralph) Kirkland of Macksburg; four
brothers: Leroy (wife Hazel), J.R. (wife Beulah) of Creston; Dean (wife Donna)
of Diagonal, Dale (wife Caroline) of Rockport, Mo.; several nieces and nephews;
other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two
brothers, Francis and LaVern.

Cecil Carl -
Lenox
native Cecil Carl Reynolds died Jan. 23 in Chula Vista, Cal. He was 73 years old.
He was born Jan. 1, 1919, in Lenox and was
a
46-year resident of the Chula Vista area.
After
graduating from Lenox High School, he served in the Us. Navy from 1937-1941,
and following that was an electrical
engineer
in civil service for 33 years.
He was
a member of the Chula Vista Community Church, Lodge No. 626 where he was a
32-degree Mason, Shriners and Order of Easter
Star.
He was also active with Rainbow for Girls.
Survivors
include his wife Hildred; daughters Carol E. Britton
of Chula Vista and Sharon K Kersy of Fallbrook;
brother Vern Reynolds of
Solvang;
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services
were Jan. 28 at Chula Vista Community Church, private interment in Glen Abbey
Memorial Park.
Arrangements
were under the direction of Humphrey Mortuary.

Reynolds, Cecil Carl -
Carl
Reynolds was born on a farm near Lenox, Iowa, on January 1, 1919. He lived
their until he joined the Navy in 1937 and served four years aboard the U.S.S.
Cincinnati as an Electricians's mate. Honorably
discharged in 1941, he married Hildred Klinzman of Lenox in
July
of that year. They moved to Bremerton, Washington, where he was employed during
World War II at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
In
1946, Carl and Hedy came to Chula Vista with their
two young daughters. The family moved into their E Street home, and it has been
their
residence for nearly half a century.
Carl
worked, until his retirement in 1973, as a civil service electronics
engineering supervisor, with most of that time spent a NAVELEX in San Diego.
During his lifetime, Carl gave uniquely of his special skills, not only to his
family but to his church, the Masonic Order, the Order of Eastern Star, the
International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and to his friends, and
acquaintances; always ready to help when there was a need. Never content to accept a
fault when it could be corrected. Carl was a major influence in fixing,
improving, or repairing the broken, stuck or squeaking.
Carl
was active as a 32nd degree Mason and served as the Chula Vista Temple manager
for 17 years. He was a mainstay of the Chula Vista Rainbow Assembly's Parents'Club for 20 years and served on the Grand Executive
Committee. Carl was a conservator for several elderly members of his community,
as well as an elder, trustee and grounds keeper-upper at the Chula Vista
Christian Church for 30 years. He most recently was "electrical
consultant" and active member of the Community Congregational Church in
Chula Vista; and an ever-ready confidant, counselor, rescuer, and friend to his
family.
Surviving
Carl is his wife, Hedy. They celebrated their 50th
anniversary last July with a family reunion and a wonderful, warm reception
with their many friends. He is also survived by his brother Verne Reynolds,
daughters Carol (Mrs. Robert Britton) and Sharon (Mrs. Bert Kersey),
granddaughters Cherilyn Browne and Laural Wicks, and great grandchildren Lauren and Jessica.
Carl's extended family includes
step-grandchildren
Jon, Mark, and Victoria Britton and their children.

A
Memorial Mass for Edward J. Ryan was held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at St Patrick's
Catholic Church in Lenox, with Rev. John Bertogli celebrant.
Edward
died Jan. 26 in Corning at the age of 73. He was born on June 15, 1918 in Adams
County.
Honorary

Curtis
Wayne Smith, son of Alpheous and Laura Minnard Smith, was born June 12, 1914, on the family farm
in Union Township in Adams County. He died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1992 at Mercy
Hospital in Corning at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 13 days.
He
grew up in Union Township and attended school in the Lenox-Stringtown area. He married Geneva Ellen Houchin on Nov. 8, 1952
at Huntsville, Ark.
He
worked as a heavy equipment operator for Hopper Brothers Rock Quarry in
Eldorado, Kansas. His work took them to various locations
while
he worked for Missouri Valley Limestone Products and Schildberg Construction Co. They settled in 1964 on the Houchin family farm before retiring and moving to Lenox in 1976.
Wayne
was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Ellen Smith; his parents, Alpheous and Laura Smith, and brother, Harold Smith.
He
is survived by son Gerald and his wife Kelly of Plymouth, Minn.; three
daughters, Sharon Best of Omaha, Neb., Kay Parrott of Lenox, and Raedeen and husband Paul Bigelow of Bridgewater, Iowa; 10
grandchildren, two great grandchildren; and brother Jesse and wife Grace Smith
of Oswego, Kansas.
Funeral
services were held Feb. 28 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home
in Lenox, with Rev. Max Nelson officiating. Casket bearers
were
David Imel, Richard Corum,
Jeff Reed, Norman Houchin, Blase Smith, and Ron Fitzgerald. Interment was in Washington Cemetery in Gravity.

She
was born to Se.E. and Agnes Bannon Robinson in Taylor County on Jan. 18, 1893. She was married to the late Cleo
Smith.
Funeral
services were Dec. 27 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox with Rev John Bertogli officiating.
Eva
attended rural schools and graduated from Lenox in 1911. She was a school
teacher for 48 years in Texas and Iowa.
She
retired from teaching at Coon Rapids and moved to Lenox in 1976. She entered
the Lenox Care Center in 1985.
She
is preceded in death by two infant sons; daughter Kathryn Ann Lemon; a
grandson; sister Dessa Carruthers;
three brothers,
Blaine,
Frank and Mark Robinson; and two young sisters.
She
is survived by son-in-law Arthur Lemon of Des Moines; three grandchildren and
great grandchildren; sister Grace Thuem of Crowley,
Texas; sister-in-law Lulu Robinson of Lenox; and several nieces and nephews.
Burial
was at North Fairview cemetery in Lenox with Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

for Thomas Keith Smith of Lenox, 78, were held Jan. 3 at the United
Presbyterian Church in Lenox, with Rev.
Paul Grandon officiating.
Music
was provided by Norma Paymal, organist; Susanne Wiebusch, vocalist; and R.J. Metteer,
trumpeter.
A
second service was held Jan. 4 at the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck, with
Rev. Grandon officiating once again.
Music
was provided by James Grupp, organist, and Don Schildroth, vocalist. Order of Easter Star services were
conducted by
the Coinette Chapter of Reinbeck. Burial was in the Reinbeck
Cemetery.
Pallbearers
were Don Miller, Dennis Bunch, Paul Oliphant, Paul Parkhurst,
Bill Frederick and Richard Wilson.
Mr.
Smith was born April 17, 1913, in Fayette County to Cortez and Nellie (Ward)
Merrill. He died Dec. 30, 1991, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
His
mother died soon after he was born, and he was adopted by Thomas and Aura
(Hadley) Smith. He attended Oelwein schools , and Upper Iowa University in
Fayette and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
He
was a teacher and band instructor at Stanley, Paton, Dexter, Reinbeck, Orient-Macksburg and Lenox. He married Marian Lane, on August 10,
1937, at Manchester. They operated a cabinet and drapery business from 1947 to
1964, retiring in 1978.
He
was a member of the Lenox Methodist Church, a 60-year member and past master of
Coin Masonic Lodge in Reinbeck, and Tremont Masonic Lodge in Lenox. He was a
life member and past patron of the Order of Eastern Star and past watchman of
Shepherds of
Union
White Shrine in Creston. He was also a member of El Kahir Shrine Temple in Cedar Rapids, Valley Chapter Royal Arch Masons No. 20, Aaron
Council No. 58, Baldwin Commandery, Knights Templar,
General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the sons of the
American
Revolution, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music
Fraternity.
Survivors
include his wife, Marian, of Lenox; brother Dean Merrill of Oelwein; son Dr.
Gary Smith Merrill of Manhattan, Kansas; foster daughter Lorraine Karns of Des Moines; and three grandsons.

Mobley -
Alberta
Catherine (Mobley) Van Winkle, oldest daughter of Albert Mobley and Maudie Garrett Mobley, passed away at
Clearview Home in Clearfield on Dec. 15, 1991 at the age of 74.
She
was born in Worth County, Missouri, on August 1, 1917. She moved with her
parents to the Benton, Iowa area in 1929. There she grew up, graduating from
Benton High School in 1936,
On
Nov. 22, 1955, Alberta married Delmar Van Winkle of Clearfield, and the couple
made their home in Clearfield. To this union was born one daughter, Linda Kay.
Alberta
enjoyed working side by side Delmar on their farm. She enjoyed gardening and
especially her flower beds. Indoors, she enjoyed sewing and always had delicious
meals prepared. The most special joy of her life was spending time with her
three grandchildren.
She
enjoyed her family and friends. Even during her lengthy illness with cancer she
had a welcome smile for everyone.
Alberta
was a member of the Clearfield United Methodist Church.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Denzo.
She
is survived by her husband, Delmar; daughter, Linda and her husband, Denny
Kerns; grandchildren Amy, Shane and Rachel; brother Burl Mobley and his wife, Martena; sister Hazel Laughlin; sister-in-law Darlene
Mobley; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mr. and
Mrs.
Spud Van Winkle; several nephews, a niece, aunts, cousins and friends.

Walter, Katherine Cox -
Katherine
Cox Walter, youngest daughter of Matthew Artemus and
Kate Manning Cox, passed away at the Hemet Valley Medical Center in Hemet,
Calif., on December 27, 1991.
Born
in Rock Rapids, Iowa, Linn County, on July 22, 1902, she grew to adulthood
there. As a child, she was a student of the German School. After graduating
from Rock Rapids High School, she attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville,
Tenn. From there
she
transferred to the University of Iowa where she affiliated with Pi Beta Phi and
completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1924.
From
1924 to 1928, she taught English in the high schools of Clearfield and Bedford
in Taylor County, Iowa.
On
June 16, 1926, she was married to Roland A. Walter of Lenox. They made their
home in Lenox where Roland was associated with the Lenox National Bank.
To
this union were born three children, Dr. Roland Cox Walter of Iowa City, Iowa;
Janet Walter Perrier of Palm Desert, Calif.; and Joan Walter Hall of Irvine,
Calif.
In
1937, the family moved from Lenox to "The Farm". Roland and Katherine
raised their children to their college years here.
While
still maintaining their permanent home on the farm, Roland and Katherine
resided in Des Moines during the years of 1953 through 1961 when Roland was
United States Marshall of Iowa, Southern District.
In
1967, Katherine and Roland built a new home in Lenox at 104 West Kansas Avenue.
After Roland's death in 1978, Katherine continued to live in Lenox until 1988
when she went to Hemet, Calif., at the invitation of Lucile Monk, her dear
friend of 45 years, and at the urging of her daughters.
Katherine
and Roland had visited the girls annually during Iowa's cold months of winter.
Katherine
resided with Lucile at Sunwest Village and later at
The Village in Hemet.
Katherine
was a highly intelligent, gifted woman and used her talents giving to others.
She crafted beautiful needlework but her real love was knitting. She delighted
in making sweaters and hoods for the babies and sweaters and Christmas
stockings for each
loved
one.
She
was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church having descended from a
grandfather who was a Methodist minister.
For
more than 60 years, she was a faithful member of the PEO Sisterhood, serving in
every office many times. Katherine also served her community, state and nation.
She served the citizens of Lenox in various civic capacities, but it was as an
active member of the American Legion Auxiliary that she rose to the high office
of the auxiliary's Department President for the State of Iowa. Later she was
elevated to the National Board where her energies were focused on Child
Welfare. It was through their work in the auxiliary that Katherine and Lucile
met.
Katherine
had a real love of literature and fine books. With books from her father's
collection; she opened a lending library in Lenox, which would spark the
inception of a dream for a library for the town. She and others worked long and
hard to make that dream a reality.
Both
she and Roland had a love of country and entered into the politics of the
Republican party. Roland was a delegate to the 1948 GOP National Convention in
Philadelphia, and during his lifetime received three presidential appointments
under Presidents
Hoover
and Eisenhower. Katherine worked behind the scenes on the precinct, county,
district and state levels. Later, during
the
Des Moines years, she served the Iowa legislature as Clerk.
She
loved sports. As an enthusiastic booster of the Iowa Hawkeyes, she followed the
progress of the football and basketball teams faithfully. Golf was another
sport that brought her great enjoyment. She was a keen game player and
possessed great skill for the game
of
bridge.
Katherine
was a refined woman and a devoted mother. She loved beautiful things and taught
her children about art and music, fine books. Above all else, she loved her
family of whom she was very proud. Her six grandchildren and four great
grandchildren brought her
equal
pride and delight. She was a faithful correspondent to family and friend.
Preceded
in death by her parents, her sister Frances Cox Hampe,
and her husband. She is survived and beloved by her children, Dr. Roland C.

Laguna Niguel, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Perrier of Long Beach, Calif.; Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Fink (Katherine Hall) of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; her great
grandchildren, Anna Walter-Rinne, Ryan, Robert, and Kiley Chase; her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Marjorie Fleming of
Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Mrs. Nell Walter of Lenox; her nieces and nephews.
A memorial
service was given in Katherine's honor on January 11, 1992 in the Chapel of the
Hemet United Methodist Church in Hemet, Calif.; officiated by the Rev. Stanley Gollery. Her ashes were dispersed at sea.
Memorial

Young, Mildred E McCreight -
Funeral
services for Mildred E. Young, 84, of Lenox were held Monday. Jan. 6, at the
First United Presbyterian Church of Lenox with Rev. Don Fisher officiating.
Casket
bearers were Orville Williams, Wayne McFee, Paul Maynes, Kenneth McFee, John W.
Borland and Bill Henderson.
Music
was provided by Roberta Lockhart, organist and Gwen Maynes,
soloist.
Interment
was in West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox with Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mildred
E. Young, daughter of Elmer and Bessie Ramsey McCreight,
was born June 5, 1907, southeast of Lenox. She died on Jan. 4, 1992, at Clearview in Clearfield.
Following
graduation from Clearfield High School in 1927, she attended Sterling College
at Sterling, Kansas, for two years.
She
later worked at the State Institution in Glenwood.
On
Nov. 26, 1954, Mildred was united in marriage to Richard Young at the Lenox
United Presbyterian Church. After her marriage she worked at a Lenox cafe and
at various jobs. She loved to work in her garden and with her flowers.
She
was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dick; and a brother, L.L. McCreight.
