Schweers, Herman Joseph -
Herm Schweers, 32, Lenox, died last Saturday at St.
Elizabeth Community Health Center in Lincoln, Neb. He had suffered burns and
resulting
complications in a plane crash here May 29.
The
crash occurred at Lenox Airport while Schweers was
attempting to take off in the plane he used in his aerial spraying business,
Herm's Spray Service.
Authorities
cited three factors in the crash: runway conditions, air conditions and pilot
error. FAA and Adams County Sheriff's Department investigators said a wing of
the plane struck a post when the plane failed to gain altitude rapidly enough,
and
that Schweers accidentally hit the lever controlling the
flaps when he attempted to dump the full load of insecticide mix in the plane's
spray tank. The resulting drop of the plane, officials said, caused the plane's
wheels to catch on a farm fence, flipping the plane into a pasture on the Alvin
Brown farm adjacent to the airport.
Schweers suffered second and third degree burns over 85 per cent of his body when the
plane burst into flames as it struck the ground. He also came into contact with
the diluted insecticide.
He
had been a patient at the burn center at St. Elizabeth's since the day of the
crash, having been taken there from Creston by Life
Flight
Helicopter. He had been on the critical list since arriving at St. Elizabeth's.
Doctors
at the burn center at St. Elizabeth said his hands, eyes and lungs all were
seriously injured.
Herman
Joseph Schweers was born Aug. 6, 1953, at Corning,
son of Arthur and Mabel Hogan Schweers. The family
later moved to the Lenox area, and Herman attended Lenox schools through junior
high. His freshman and sophomore years he attended Mt. Michael School at
Elkhorn, Neb., then returned to Lenox, where he was graduated from high school
in 1971.
He
attended Northwestern College in Orange City. He participated in wrestling
throughout his school years. He and Marcia Lynn Wurster were married Dec. 1, 1979, in Clearfield.
They
resided two miles south of Lenox for four years, before moving to a farm
northwest of Lenox, where they had made their home since. Herm's Spray Service also included ground
spraying operations, and the Schweerses also farmed.
Following
the plane crash, friend, relatives and neighbor helped plant this year's crops
at the Schweers farm.
Herman
was a lifelong communicant of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox. He enjoyed
church, activities and loved flying. He was
devoted
to spreading happiness among his family and friends, and was especially close
to his parents-in-law, Willis and Lois Wurster,
