Brown, Emmett Edward (Sonny) -

Emmett Edward Brown (Sonny), son of Emmett E. and Estelle B. Brown was born at Blockton, Iowa on March 27, 1932 and died at his

home in Fremont, California on May 3, 1986, at the age of 54 years.

He is survived by his mother, Estelle Brown of Wenatchee, Washington and two sisters, Joyce Keeley of Malaga, Washington and Mardelle Brownlee of Santa Barbara, California.

Brown, Hazel Frances Mohler -

Funeral services were held for Hazel Frances Brown on May 18 at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home.

Burial was at the Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa. Rev. Carl Cummings officiated.

Hazel Frances Mohler Brown, daughter of John F. Mohler and Sarah King Mohler was born at Bedford, Iowa December 15, 1892

and departed this life May 16, 1986 at Bedford Manor in Bedford at the age of 93 years five months and one day.

She grew to maturity in the Bedford area where she attended the public school and the Presbyterian Church.

On March 11, 1914 she was united in marriage to William Glenn Brown at the home of the bride's parents and they lived on farms in

Taylor County until they moved to Bedford in 1964. After her husband passed away she lived in Atlantic, Iowa until August 1983 she moved to Bedford Manor where she had continued to reside.

Two children were born to this union: Francis and Julia.

She taught rural school prior to her marriage and was engaged as a housewife and homemaker for her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glenn Brown who died March 9, 1977; a sister Hallie Helen Laub; a brother, John Harold Mohler and a grandson, Gordon Lee Brown.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Francis Brown and his wife Hazel of Bedford, Iowa; daughter, Julia L. McNees and her husband

Russell McNees of Atlantic, Iowa; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and one great great grandson; a niece and other

relatives and friends.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and had been active as a 4-H leader; a member of the Farm Bureau Women; American

Angus Auxiliary; U.T.D. Club and Marshall Social Club.

She will be remembered as a kind and loving mother, friend and neighbor and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Bullock, Albert Carlton -

Bullock, Bertha Ella Moore-

A rural Blockton couple, Bertha Bullock. 70, and Albert Bullock, 74, died in head-on collision with another vehicle April 29 near Hastings.

Investigating officers said Beverly Tate and Patricia Shannon, both of Red Oak, were injured in the crash.

The accident occurred when a car driven by Bertha Bullock crossed the median on Highway 34, striking the westbound vehicle driven by

Tate. They said Tate had pulled off the pavement when she saw the Bullock vehicle approaching her in the wrong lane, then pulled back onto the road when the other car returned to the proper lane.

Tate was unable to avoid a collision a few minutes later when the Bullock vehicle again crossed over into the wrong lane.

Mr. and Mrs. Bullock were pronounced dead at the scene.

Memorial services were held May 2, 1986 at the United Christian-Presbyterian Church in Bedford for Albert Carlton Bullock

and Bertha Bullock.

Albert Carlton Bullock, son of Lester Carlton Bullock and Alice Janet Smith Bullock, was born March 31, 1908. He grew up on a

farm near Knox and Pleasant Lake, North Dakota. He graduated from Jamestown College, Jamestown, North Dakota, in 1921 and

then went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois in 1933. He was

ordained a Presbyterian minister and at his first parish in Stanford, Montana, he met and eventually married Bertha Ella Moore

Bullock.

Bertha Bullock, daughter of Alva Ellsworth Moore and Mattie Louisa Kessling Moore, was born October 20, 1916, grew up in Stanford,

Montana, and after attending a year of college at Bozeman, Montana, she and Albert were married on July 1, 1936.

They then served Presbyterian Churches in White Sulphur Springs, Montana; Wessington, South Dakota; Avon, South Dakota (where

their first daughter Alice Elberta was born); Kadoka, South Dakota (where second daughter Ellen Ruth was born); Rushville, Nebraska

(where son Lester Ellsworth was born); on to Dix, Nebraska; Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska; Manawa Park Church and Hardin Church in

Council Bluffs, Nebraska; Dexter and Pitzer in Iowa; and finally Lone Rock, Iowa. They retired in 1973 and moved to an acreage

outside Blockton, Iowa.

They were preceded in death by their parents, Albert's brother Ralph Bullock of Rugby, North Dakota, and Bertha's sister Alma

Conrad of Lakeside, California. 

Left to be nurtured by their memory are daughter Alice Ludwig, her husband David and their daughter Melinda Davison and her

husband David of Council Bluffs; daughter Ellen Jaco, her husband Allen and their children Melody and Brian of Council Bluffs; son Lester Bullock, his wife Sandra and their children, Alex and Tad of Mooreroft Wyoming. Rev. Bullock has two surviving sisters: Ruth Emelie of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Marion Hicks of Petaluma, California.

Bertha Bullock had a surviving sister, Alice Johnston of Santa Ana, California, and two brothers: O.J. Moore of Redmont, Oregon, and

Ray Moore of Mojave, California.

Rev. Bullock recently celebrated his 50th year of ordained ministry in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He actively served on the

parish level as well as in presbytery and synod committees. He was a member of Des Moines Presbytery.

Bertha Bullock was an active member and elder in the Bedford United Christian-Presbyterian Church, a member of the Blockton

Garden Club, and was active in the United Christian-Presbyterian Women's Association.

Their lives, fused by their bond of love for Christ and their inseparable love for each other, nurtured many lives in Christ. A

memorial has been established. Their memories will continue, to nurture all who have ever been touched and loved by them, to the

glory of Jesus Christ the Lord. Interment is planned at a later date at Maple Grove Cemetery near Marshalltown, Iowa

Cash, John Donald -

Funeral services for John Donald Cash, 83, former Lenox resident, were held recently at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Algona.

Mr. Cash died April 19 in Algona, where he had made his home for some years.

The Rev. Thomas Nash officiated at the services, and burial was in Riverview Cemetery there.

Mr. Cash was born Dec. 1, 1902, son of William H. Cash, MD, and Helen Phelan Cash. The family resided in Gravity at the time of his

birth, and he later moved to Lenox. He was a graduate of Lenox High School and Creighton University in Omaha.

John Cash was retired from the pharmaceutical field, having been executive vice president of Wyeth Pharmaceutical Co. of

Philadelphia, Pa., a nationally-known company. He was in charge of production of the first poliomyelitis vaccine made in

Iowa. He moved from Philadelphia to Algona in 1959.

He was a member of Rotary and a 50-year Iowa Registered Pharmacist.

He leaves his wife, Vernice Nelson Cash of the home; a daughter, Mary Straub of Whittemore, Ia.; two brothers, Paul G. Cash

MD of Des Moines and W. Keith Cash of Albia, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

His parents, a brother Harold and a sister Mildred preceded him in death.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Donald J., Joseph J., Robert P., Peter F., Thomas C., James M. Francis P. and Edward A. Straub.

Davidson, Lewis Dwight -

Funeral services were held May 10 for Lewis Dwight Davidson at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home. Rev. Carl Cummings and Rev.

Merel Yeager officiated. Burial was at the Fairview Cemetery, Bedford.

Lewis Dwight Davidson, son of Lewis and Iva Crawford Davidson, was born May 18, 1917 on a farm in Ross Township in Taylor

County, and passed away May 7, 1986 at the age of 68 years, 11 months and 20 days.

He attended school in Ross township and became a member of the Berea Church of Christ which he attended regularly. The family

later moved to a farm near Sharpsburg where his father passed away in 1933. Dwight, being the eldest son, accepted the

responsibility at age 16 of operating the farm and became the man of the house for the family. The monumental task of farming

in the depression years influenced Dwight throughout his life.

On February 17, 1939 he was united in marriage to Mildred Baxter of Bedford. To this union a son and two daughters were born.

He was engaged in farming until his retirement in 1977. Dwight and Mildred lived on the same farm four miles south of Bedford

for 38 years before moving to town.

Dwight's occupation as a farmer gave him an opportunity to conserve the soil as he loved the land and he discharged his stewardship

well. He enjoyed working with livestock and treated them with kindness and respect. Dwight was fortunate to enjoy his retirement

years. He especially enjoyed his golfing and coffee buddies. He also enjoyed yard and garden work.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his half-brother Wendell, his half-sister's husband Roy Welch, and a sister-in-law June

Davidson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mildred, the three children Lois and her husband Dick Lee of Churdan, Iowa, Alan and his wife

Dianna of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Nancy Lea and husband Nick Holford of Auckland, New Zealand. There are also four grandchildren

who were precious to him: David and Todd Lee, Delynn and Ryan Davidson. Also surviving are his two brothers, Dean and wife

LaVeta of Bedford and Dale and wife Grace of Chicago, his half sister Bernice Welch of Lenox, sister-in-law Flavia Davidson, and

half-sister, Mildred and husband Francis Cobb of Independence, Missouri, his mother-in-law, Pearl Baxter of Bedford; several nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Dwight especially took pride in his family. He was a kind and considerate husband and father, a good neighbor, a friend to many

and always ready to help those in need, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Davies, David -

Two teenagers, Timothy Hiatt of New Market and David Davies of the Nodaway community, were pronounced dead at the scene of a one-car mishap about eight miles west of Clarinda. Their bodies were found April 29 after they had been reported as missing persons by the Taylor County Sheriff's Department.

Hiatt, 18, and Davies, 19, had failed to return to their homes following prom activities at New Market the Saturday before their

bodies were found.

Officials said Hiatt was apparently driver of the 1975 Chevrolet Vega registered to him at the time of the accident. They said the car

appeared to have been traveling west on Highway 2 at a high rate of speed when it left the road on the northeast side of a bridge over West Tarkio River. The car was airborne for about 86 feet across the river, authorities said, before it came to rest on its top

in a ditch on the west bank. The accident was discovered by an unidentified passerby at 5:30 p.m. April 21.

Hiatt was a son of Larry and Grace Hiatt; Davies' parents are Ted and Karolyn Davies.

Double funeral services were held May 2 at the New Market High School.

Dymond, Guyla J Swartwood -

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. May 30 at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren near Adel for Guyla J. Dymond, 29, of rural Adel. She died May 28 in the emergency room of Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Burial was in Waukee Cemetery, Waukee, Iowa.

Mrs. Dymond was born in Corning and had resided in Clearfield prior to moving to Adel 10 years ago.

She was employed as a teller at Brenton Bank & Trust Co. of Adel. She was a member of the Panther Creek Church.

Mrs. Dymond leaves her husband, Steve, a daughter, Dani, and son, Rowdy, all of the home in Adel; her mother, Donna Glendenning

of Mt. Ayr, and stepfather, Max Glendenning of Mt. Ayr; a sister, Debbie Sage of DeSoto; a brother, Robert Swartwood of Clearfield; and her grandparents, Claire and Savilla Nelsrud of Grand Forks, N. D.

Ferguson, Mary Elizabeth Recknor -

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. May 24 at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church for Mary Elizabeth Recknor Ferguson, 88. She died at Lenox Care Center May 21. Don Fisher officiated and burial was in West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox.

Pallbearers were Nick Evans, Tim, Tom and Bob Brokaw, Dan, Dave and Vince Sweeney and Steve Stoaks.

Mrs. Ferguson was born Jan. 30, 1898, in Adams County, daughter of James P. and Ida Shreck Recknor.

She joined the Methodist Church at an early age, later transferring to the United Presbyterian Church, where she remained an active

member until her health failed.

On May 19, 1920, she and George Ferguson were married. They had observed their 62nd anniversary.

She was a loving mother, the center of her home, and enjoyed crafts and sewing. She was a grandmother who always made

Christmas special.

She leaves five daughters, Merle Beggs of Creston, Marjorie Evans, Thelma Boltinghouse, Helen Brokaw and Juanita Sweeney, all of Lenox; two sisters, Cora Buxton of Creston and Etta Black of Lenox; 23 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, a daughter, Georgia, a sister, Callie Bush, a brother, Ernest Recknor, a

granddaughter and four great grandchildren.

Grimm, Mable Claire Clark -

Funeral services were held May 10 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home for Mable Claire Clark Grimm.

Burial was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity, Iowa. Rev. Carl Cummings officiated.

Mabel Grimm was the daughter of Charles Clark and Lillie D. Stevens Clark was born at Blanchard, Iowa January 10, 1902

and departed this life May 7, 1986 at the Lenox Nursing Home at the age of 84 years 3 months and 27 days.

She lived in and around Clarinda, Gravity and Sharpsburg and grew to maturity in Sharpsburg where she attended the public

school and the Methodist Church.

On June 15, 1921 she was united in marriage to Leonard Grimm at the Methodist Parsonage in Chariton, Iowa. They lived on a

farm two miles west of Sharpsburg until 1934; the family moved to Osceola, Missouri until 1941. Then they moved to Kansas City, Missouri until 1948 when they returned to Sharpsburg to again make their home.

To this union three children were born: a son, Charles Leland and daughters Helen Jeanne and June.

In Mabel's earlier years she worked at Hurd's General Store; served as Postmistress and helped with the newspaper the "North

Taylor Review" in Sharpsburg, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Leonard who died in 1979.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Charles Leland and his wife Bettye and three granddaughters: Kathy, Denise and Mellisa of

Phoenix. Arizona. Her daughter, Helen Jeane and husband Frank Tillman of Sharpsburg and three grandchildren: James of Pinola, California; Veronica of Rodeo, California and April Mains of Sharpsburg, Iowa; daughter June and her husband Andy Anderson of Sharpsburg, Iowa and granddaughter Linda Larkin of Fredonia, Kansas and eight great grandchildren.

Mabel has five sisters: Pearl Pfander of Creston, Iowa; Eva Marsh of Iola, Kansas; Bessie Pennebaker of Lenox, Iowa; Allene

Hoker of Chicago, Illinois; and Lily Belle Philpott of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Evert Pennebaker of Lenox, Iowa; nieces,

nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She was an active member of the Methodist Ladies Aid for many years. She loved to cook, crochet and work in the garden. We will

miss her good sense of humor and her great smile. She was a kind and considerate loving mother and friend and she will be missed

by all who knew and loved her.

Marshall, Fannie Ella Sleep -

Funeral services were held for Fannie Ella Marshall May 14 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery.

Rev. Carl Cummings officiated.

Fannie Ella Sleep Marshall, daughter of Albert Sleep and Mattie Weingarth Sleep was born near Siam in Taylor County Iowa on

November 17, 1899 and departed this life May 11, 1986 at the Vista Gardens in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 86 years 4 months

and 24 days.

She moved with her family to Bedford where she attended the public school and the Christian Church.

On February 5, 1919 she was united in marriage to Homer Marshall and they lived on a farm in rural Taylor County prior to

moving to Bedford. Her husband Homer Marshall passed away in 1969 and she moved to Red Oak, Iowa in 1976.

To this union eight children were born: Harold, Frank, Robert, Herbert, Joan, Martha, Richard and James.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Bertha Sleep who died in infancy and Alma Sleep Bales.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Harold Marshall and his wife Thelma of Chicago, Illinois; Frank Marshall and his wife

Val of Addison, Illinois; Robert D. Marshall and his wife Ina Lou of Bedford, Iowa; Herbert Marshall and his wife Mary of Red Oak,

Iowa; Joan and her husband Joseph Al-Jabouri of Glendale, California; Richard Marshall and his wife Donna of Bedford, Iowa; James

Marshall and his wife Dianna of Oakland, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; a sister, Lola Mae Cole of Springfield, Illinois;

other relatives and friends.

In her youth she became a member of the Christian Church.

Her family and friends will remember her as a kind and loving mother and neighbor and she will be missed by those who knew her.

Morris, Kenneth Edwin -

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 14, at the Lenox United Methodist Church for Kenneth Edwin Morris, 65. Mr. Morris

died May 11 at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines.

The Rev. Lester Hesseltine officiated at the 10:30 a.m. service. Pallbearers were Bill Larson, Randy Trost, Jim Parrish, Danny Purdum,

Jack Fehring and Steve Sweeney.

Honorary pallbearers were Don Keast, Mike Trost, Bob Parrish, Raymond Trost, Dave Christensen, Leroy Blessman, Raymond Purdum

and Lonnie Barker.

Mr. Morris was born Feb. 14, 1921, eldest son of Claude and Helen Butler Morris, on a farm near Kent. He was reared in the Kent and

Lenox areas and began school in Kent. He attended country school through grade 8 in Adams County, and was graduated in 1938 from

Lenox High School.

He joined the Methodist church early in life and had been a member of the Stringtown, Clearfield and Lenox churches. He was a past

master of Noble Lodge No. 458.

On Valentine's Day in 1942, his 21st birthday, Mr. Morris and Helen Jean Robinson were married in Maryville, Mo. They had been married 44 years, and had celebrated their 40th anniversary in 1982 with family and friends.

Mr. Morris had farmed all his life, first on a farm near Stringtown from 1942 until 1952, then near Clearfield for 35 years, where he was farming at the time of his death. He and Mrs. Morris had moved to the present home in Lenox in 1978.

Mr. Morris loved hard work and farming, and could accomplish more in a day than many people. He especially liked harvest time and

running a combine. He always worked hard right up to "quittin time," and had said he loved the smell of "that black dirt."

He was a good neighbor and great friend who loved his grandchildren and was a great teaser. His grandchildren adored his attention,

candy, pickup truck rides and being on his farm.

Mitch Hargin, a neighbor in Clearfield, was very close to Mr. Morris and his family and spent a great deal of time in the Morris

home. Jack Fehring of Lenox was like a son to Mr. Morris, and was a very special friend who did many extra things for the Morris family.

Mr. Morris leaves his wife, Helen Jean of the home in Lenox; two sons, Lewis and wife, Becky, Lenox, and Todd of Maryville, Mo.; two

daughters, Nancy and husband, Terry, Jefferson, and Janie and husband, Mike, Lenox; nine grandchildren, Brent, Derek and Ryan

Morris, Brandon, Dominic, Tristan and Rhett Brown, and Megan and Ashley Bengard.

He is also survived by two brothers, Hal Dean of Kent and Robert of Lenox, and a sister, Marjorie Reynolds of Lenox.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant grandson, Aaron Jay Morris.

Sleep, Troy -

Troy Sleep was born April 19, 1898 in High Prairie Community, Polk Township, Taylor County, Iowa, to James F. and Eva Proffitt

Sleep.

He attended school at the High Prairie School and farmed in the area until he retired and moved to Shenandoah in 1968.

On July 26, 1924, Troy was united in marriage to Viona Ellistine Gray in Bedford. She preceded him in death on May 8, 1981.

Also preceding him in death were his parents, son Floyd in 1949, brothers Frank, Clarence, Harley and sister Edna.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Darwin (Jean) Farrell, Shenandoah and Mrs. Charles (Joan) Perkins, Rolling Hills, California;

three sons, James of Los Angeles, California, Richard of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and Edwin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Elza

(Dona) Fine, Bedford, and Mrs. Goldie Narber, Hopkins; one brother, Harmon Sleep, Clarinda; 17 grandchildren and 17 great

grandchildren.

He died May 8, 1986, a resident of Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, following a brief illness. He was 88. Funeral services

were held at the Jennings Chapel in Shenandoah on May 11. Honorary pall bearers were Larry Farrell, Rick Sleep, Brad Sleep, Laird

Perkins, Don Murphy and Greg Stark. Graveside services were conducted by the Reverend Carl Cummings, Bedford, at 10:30 a.m.

on Monday, May 12. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa.

Smith, Roy Alvin -

Funeral services were held May 17 at Sutphen Funeral Home in Villisca for Roy Alvin Smith.

Interment was at Maple Grove Cemetery, Guss, Iowa. Rev. Dennis Neal officiated.

Roy Alvin Smith, 72, son of Henry A. Smith and Nettie May Ely Smith, was born September 25, 1914, in Harrison County near

Eaglevillc, Mo., and passed away Wednesday, May 14, 1986, at his home in Villisca, Iowa.

He attended a rural school in Harrison County, Mo., then was a resident of the Guss community for 12 years, near Nodaway for

5-6 years, south of Red Oak for five years, then retired in Villisca for the last 13 years. He had farmed all his life.

Roy was married to Laverna Bernice Gibson on January 16, 1937, at Glenwood, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Laverna, one brother, Keith Smith of Kellerton, Ia.; one sister, Leola Trower of Mt. Ayr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Nettie Smith; three brothers; one sister; and one daughter.
