Bolinger, Austie Pearl -

Austie Pearl Bolinger, 83, passed away Feb. 18 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston.

Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at Larkin & Shelley Funeral Home, with Dr. Victor Bolinger, Pastor of the Allendale Baptist Church officiating.

Casket bearers were Mike Bolinger, R.B. Davenport, Steve Bolinger, Virgil Bolinger, Curtis Bolinger and Wade Bolinger.

Honorary bearers were Roy Weddle, Owen Spencer, Ervin Spencer, Barton Spencer, Claude Rinehart, Lauren Bolinger, Kenny Bolinger and Paul Bolinger.

Music was provided by Carol Ann Kinder.

Interment was at Blue Grove Cemetery. Memorials are to the family.

Austie was born the daughter of Henry (Sam) and Dora Pyle Spencer in Ringgold County, Iowa, on Dec. 2, 1911. She was born and raised in Ringgold County, and on Oct. 13, 1932, she was united in marriage with Rex Bolinger in Grant City, Mo. The couple had 12 children.

She is survived by her husband, Rex Bolinger of Lenox; children Viola (Mrs. Dwayne) Wahl of Clearfield, Junior (wife Sandy) Bolinger of

Creston, Margie (Mrs. Rob) Keener of Galena, Mo., Lowell Dean (wife Dorene) Bolinger of What Cheer, Iowa, Robert "Doc" (wife Linda) Bolinger of Clearfield, Floyd (wife Kay) Bolinger of Diagonal, Doris (Mrs Raymond) Scott of Tingley, Ron (Del) Bolinger of Lenox, Dora (Mrs. Ron) Ray of Creston, Clark (wife Elaine) Bolinger of Lenox, Georgia (Mrs. Eugene) Springer of Cromwell, Melvin (wife Sharon) Bolinger of Knoxville; 41 grandchildren, 40 greatgrandchildren, brothers Ervin (wife Ellie) Spencer of Des Moines, Barton (wife Irene)

Spencer of Mt. Ayr, Owen (wife Helen) Spencer of Mt. Ayr, and sisters Sylvia Davenport of Mt. Ayr and Arlene Reynolds of Redfield.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers Howard, Delmar, Glee and Doyle; and two brothers-in-law, Roy Davenport and Vern Reynolds.

Brown, Marvin Lee (Skeeter) -

Marvin Lee (Skeeter) Brown, age 81 years, 7 months passed away suddenly in his home Feb. 13, at Branson, Missouri. He was baptized in

the Christian faith and was still a member in Lenox, Iowa.

He was the son of Otis and Mary Richey Brown. [Born 8 Jul 1913]

He worked at several occupations retiring to Branson to fish and enjoy life to the fullest.

He began life on a farm outside of Sharpsburg and continued to farm as a young adult. He was in business as a service station owner in

Clarinda and Bedford and later owned a Sale Barn. He, then, turned to selling cars in Clarinda as well as Branson, where he moved in retirement. Even then, he found a way to share his gifts.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Bernice (William) of 56 years; two sons, Leonard Lee of Las Vegas, Nevada; Roger Allen of

Lawrence, Kansas and daughter-in-law, Rhonda; five grandchildren Cinti and husband Duke Martens of Chillicothe, Missouri; Brian

and wife, Kim of Corsicana, Texas; Dan Brown of Columbia, Missouri; and Kelli and Dana Brown of Maryville, Missouri; two step grandchildren: Aaron and Adam Payne of Lawrence, Kansas; four greatgrandchildren: Adam and Amanda Martens of Chillicothe, Missouri; and Mason and Kayla Brown of Corsicana, Texas; one sister Grace Selders of Lenox; three sisters-in-law: Bertha Williams of Lenox; Ada Stapleton of Council Bluffs; Bernice Brown of Monticello, Vermont.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Ray, Charlie and Clyde; two sisters: Oma Kirby and Daisy Baggstrom; many

nieces and nephews whom he really loved and enjoyed.

Service and burial were in North Cemetery 3 p.m., Thursday, February 18, 1995.

Davis, Clyde Alfred -

Funeral services for Clyde Alfred Davis were held Wednesday, March 1, 1995 at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox. Officiating was

Pastor Tim Maxa of First Presbyterian Church.

Music was provided by Norma Paymal, organist.

Casket bearers included: Hal Dean Veatch, Jim Wurster, Gerry Wurster, Keith Lindell, Chuckie Bishop and Jack Fehring.

Interment was at the West Fairview Cemetery.

Clyde Alfred Davis was born August 14, 1915 to Willard William and Merna Clare Sullivan Davis at Bridgewater, Iowa, and died

February 26, 1995 at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 12 days. He was the eldest of five children. He leaves two sisters - Alice Campbell and Ione Veatch. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Arthur, one sister, Leone and two brothers-in-law,

Jim Campbell and Howard Veatch.

Clyde grew up on a farm near Kent with his family, attending country school during his elementary years and graduating from high

school in Lenox in 1932. After high school, Clyde farmed with his father for a couple of years. He married Freda Basler on

Christmas Eve 1934. They continued farming the home place and in 1942 bought the farm southeast of Lenox which is still home. One daughter and 5 sons were born to this union.

Clyde is survived by his wife Freda, daughter Shirley Haynie and husband Russell of Lake Lotowana, Missouri; five sons: Donald and wife Joyce of Marion, Iowa, Dean and wife Clare of Lincoln, Nebraska, Gary and wife Cheryl of Lincoln, Nebraska, Dale of Phoenix, Arizona, Jack and wife Valerie of Runnels, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.

Clyde was always robust and healthy until his stroke in 1987. In February 1994, he moved to Taylor Ridge, moving to Lenox

Care Center July 5, 1994.

Dill, Raymond Wesley -

Raymond Wesley Dill, 87, of Lenox, passed away Jan. 14, 1995, at his home in Lenox. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating.

Casket bearers were Alan Goodson, Dave Lundquist, Wayne Beck, Dave Rogers, Ron Fulk and Reldon Huntington.

Music was provided by Kathryn Wilson, Karen Shawler and Elaine Ewart.

Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Raymond, the son of Hoyt and Dolly Wiand Dill, was born July 13, 1907 in Lenox. He attended Lenox schools and at a young age began his farming career, a labor of love that he actively continued until his death.

On Nov. 17, 1927, Raymond was married to Beulah Shelman at Bedford, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah, in 1988, and by his parents.

Survivors include two brothers-in-law and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elder, Gladys Helene Underwood -

Services for Gladys Helene Elder were held Saturday, April 1, 1995 at the Lenox Christian Church. Officiating was Reverend Dena Woldruff, pastor of the church.

Casket Bearers were: Tom Bender, Jon Bridgewater, Dave Beckett, Jay Bridgewater, Larry Walter and William Underwood. Honorary Bearers included: Kenny Black, Don Black, Glen Norton, Jake Larson and Stan Curtis.

Music was provided by Julie Scott, soloist and Catherine Wilson, organist.

Interment was at the West Fairview Cemetery. Memorials should be sent to the Lenox Christian Church.

Gladys Helene Elder was born January 29, 1906 in Sharpsburg, Iowa the daughter of Clarence and Carrie Swanson Underwood and

entered into rest on March 29, 1995 at the Clearview Nursing Home in Clearfield, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 2 months and 10 days.

She attended both grade school and high school in Sharpsburg. On December 5, 1923, she was united in marriage with Gordon A. Elder

in Creston, Iowa. This union was blessed with the birth of three children.

She is survived by her son, Howard Elder of Lenox; one daughter, Doris Jean Moneymaker of Seattle, Washington; two grandchildren,

two greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death is her husband, Gordon; her parents; one daughter, two brothers and two sisters.

Finck, Leila Winter -

Leila Finck was born Sept. 4, 1901, to Fred and Betty Mondt Winter in Adair County, Iowa. She passed away Feb. 15,

1995, at Good Samaritan Center in Fontanelle, Iowa, at the age of 93.

She is survived by her children, Irene Jacobsen and husband Arlan of Fontanelle, Dale Finck and wife Norma of

Greenfield, Shirley Williams of Stuart and Dean Finck and wife Madeline of Lenox; 12 grandchildren, 15 greatgrandchildren,

nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Henry in 1990; sister Elizabeth, brother Henry and son-in-law

Donald E. Williams.

Funeral services were held Feb. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greenfield, with Steen Funeral Home of Greenfield in charge of

arrangements. Interment was at Fontanelle Cemetery in Fontanelle.

Hays, Eleanor Smyser -

Funeral services for Eleanor Smyser Hays of Murray were held Friday, March 31, 1995 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with

Rev. Stephen Burns officiating.

Music was provided by Norma Paymal and Gwen Maynes. Casket bearers were grandsons Douglas, Von, Larry, Terry and Rick Hays; Rob,

Steven, James, Tony and Wayne Hayes; and David and Robert Monday.

Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

She was born June 17, 1911, in Elmira, Ill., to John Granville and Fannie Malone Gill Smyser. She passed away on March 27, 1995, at Iowa

Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 83.

On Nov. 27, 1930, she was united in marriage to Argyle James Hays in Conway, Iowa. They had six children.

Eleanor was a homemaker and was affiliated with the First Brethren Church in Dallas Center, where they made their home for 31 years

before moving to Murray three years ago.

Eleanor is survived by her husband Argyle of Murray; four sons, Donald (wife Joan) of Guthrie Center, Ronald (wife Treva) of Marshalltown, Richard (wife Myrna) of Murray, and William (wife Rosemary) of Van Buren, Ark.; daughter Shirley Monday

(husband Gene) of Parkersburg, West Virginia; brothers Albert Smyser of Avoca and LeRoy Smyser of Louisiana; sisters Helen

Runyan of Shenandoah and Betty Thompson of Mesa, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren and other relatives and friends.

A son, Argyle Ervin Hays, preceded her in death in 1958. She was also preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

Knodle, Charles Dean -

Charles Dean Knodle, son of Ralph E. and Mildred L. (Alpaugh) Knodle, was born July 21, 1929, on a farm east of Prescott, Iowa,

and died of a heart attack March 2, 1995, at his home, 1831 Fuller Road, West Des Moines, at the age of 65 years.

In 1932 the family moved to a farm north of Lenox, where he attended rural school at Grant No. 4. He graduated

from Lenox High School in 1947, and Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., in 1951. He was an army veteran

of the Korean War.

About 40 years ago he moved to West Des Moines, where he retired after 25 years as a sales representative for Commercial

Printing. He later worked for Acme Printing, where he retired in October 1994.

He was a member of Lions Club, Tremont Lodge 343 of Lenox, Des Moines Consistory, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and Toastmasters

International. He also was a former president of West Des Moines Little League.

One of the highlights of the year was Memorial Day weekend, when he would decorate family graves, and later attend the

all high school reunion in Lenox. He also enjoyed meeting and visiting with people. Even though his future plans were not to

be, he had accomplished much in the time he had.

Surviving are a daughter, Helen Knodle of West Des Moines; son David Knodle of Atlanta, Ga.; sister Marjorie (husband Bill)

Sweeney of Prescott; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service was held on March 9 at Windsor Heights United Methodist Church in Des Moines, with Rev. Leonard

Eberhart officiating.

Speakers were Don Richards and Dr. Randall Maharry.

Graveside services were held at the Stringtown Cemetery with Masonic services by Tremont Lodge No. 343 and military

services by the American Legion Parkinson Post No. 250 of Lenox.

Playing taps were Shannon Adkisson and Shane Sweeney.

Pall bearers were Kevin Sweeney, Alan Adkisson, Jon Sweeney, Casey Reed, Conor Reed and Aaron Cottrell.

Memorials may be directed to Shriner's Crippled Children Hospitals or Windsor Heights United Methodist Church.

Lewis, Richard C (Carl ) -

R.C. "Carl" Lewis, 72 of Monmouth, Ill. died 4:15 a.m. Saturday January 21, 1995, at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.

He was born April 1, 1922, in Humeston, Iowa, the son of Walter C. and Wilma (Barker) Lewis. He graduated from Lenox schools and

attended Lancaster Junior College in Lancaster, Ca.

Carl married Margaret Jean Purdum on July 20, 1944 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Carl was a railroad agent and telegrapher for Burlington Northern Railroad for 30 years, during that time he worked in Monmouth,

Kirkwood, and Galesburg, Ill. Prior to that he worked for the M. and St. L. Railroad and was a salesman at a clothing store in Lenox

for a time.

He served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth.

Carl is survived by his wife, Margaret Lewis, of Monmouth; 3 sons, James C. Lewis, of Monmouth, Randy J. Lewis, of Coon Rapids, MN., and Bryan L. Lewis, of Wayzata, Mn; five grandsons and one granddaughter; and one brother, William D. Lewis, of Redding, Ca.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services were held Monday, January 23, 1995, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Ill. Cremation rites were accorded following services.

Million, Barbara Ellen Pudget -

Barbara Ellen (Padget) Million, daughter of Wilmer and Edith (Carruthers) Padget, was born in Davis County, she departed this life December 30th, [1994] in Lenox, Iowa at the age of 83 years, 8 months, and 16 days. [Born 13 Apr 1911, burial Lexington Cemetery.]

Barbara grew to maturity in Davis County, where she attended country school and graduated from the 8th grade. On August 15, 1928

Barbara was united in marriage to Clifford Allen Million at Troy, Iowa, they lived in Davis and Taylor Counties, to this union were

born tow children; Lillie Ellen and Lela Esther.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Clifford, her parents Wilmer and Edith Padget; three brothers, Clell, Lale, and Paul and one sister, Vetra Covert.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Lillie Blake and her husband Howard and Lela Kitterman and her husband John; two grandson, Kenneth and Keith; one sister, Reva Wilkenson of Bloomfield; and two brother, Charles and Donald of Ottumwa, as well as

many nieces and nephews.

Barbara was a member of the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church. She also attended the Sharpsburg Study Club and the United Methodist Ladies Aid. Barbara enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, and quilting, and her friends and family.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.

Moore, Eva Mary Hill -

Eva Mary Moore of Carroll, Iowa, died at the St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll on March 6, 1995, at the age of 82.

She had been a resident of Carroll for the past 47 years after coming from Corning.

She was born on Feb. 4, 1913, in Lenox, Iowa, and was married to James O. Moore on Oct. 26, 1935, at St. Patrick's

Catholic Church in Lenox. She was the daughter of Edward C. and Elizabeth Madden Hill. She attended and graduated from

Lenox High School in 1930.

She is survived by a son, James Moore (wife Barbara) of West Des Moines; daughter Mary E. Schroer (husband Jerry) of

Carroll; three grandsons; sisters Delma Richards of Carroll and Pearl Rechsteiner of Lenox; brother Jack Hill (wife Betty) of

Corning; and sister-in-law Neva Hill of Lenox; and four greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James Moore in 1989; brother Harold Hill; an infant brother

Gerald; and brothers-in-law Everett Richards and Martin Rechsteiner.

Services were held March 8 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll, with interment in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Philpott, Lily Bel Brand -

Lily Bel Philpott, daughter of George Robert and Lillie Dell (Stevens) Brand, departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 29, 1994 at the home of her son, Tom, and daughter-in-law Kay of Georgetown, Texas. She was born Dec. 10, 1915, at Sharpsburg, Iowa, and at the

time of her death she was 79 years and 18 days old.

She grew to womanhood in the little town of Sharpsburg, uniting in marriage Sept. 25, 1933, to James Mason Philpott. The

newlyweds settled in Conway, Iowa, where they bought and ran a country grocery store. To this union two sons were born.

In 1943, the family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where they remained until 1987. During this period Lily was active in the Eastern Star. She worked in sales for 25 years at Western Auto, where she received numerous awards and outstanding sales woman of the

year on several occasions. After her retirement, she moved to the Rio Grande Valley, where she made her home in McAllen, Texas.

Lily was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Mable Grimm, Allene Hoke and Pearl Pfander. She was left widowed by her husband, Mason in 1975.

She leaves to cherish her memory two sons and their wives, Tim R. and wife Kay of Georgetown, Texas, and Jim D. and wife Sharon of Cambridge, Minn.; four grandsons and their wives, John and Susan Philpott, James and Debbie Philpott, Charles and Pattie Philpott, Ray and Laura Philpott; three grandsons, Kerry, Kevin and Paul Philpott; one granddaughter, Shari Philpott; six greatgrandchildren,

Morgan Elizabeth Philpott, Bryan Thomas Philpott, Ryan Andrew Philpott, Andrew Joseph Philpott, Kathryn Marie Philpott and Lauren Michelle Philpott; two sisters, Bessie Pennebaker of Lenox and Eva Marsh of San Jose, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church of McAllen, Texas, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 8, 1995. Final interment will be at Ridgewood Cemetery in Council Bluffs.

Smith, Velda Mae Phillips Dukes -

Services for Velda Mae Smith were held at 10:00 Friday, February 17, 1995 at Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Diagonal, Iowa. Officiating, Rev. Pam Farren.

Casketbearers were; Jack Stephens, Jerry Stephens, Cecil Smith, Dick Taylor, Jack Taylor, Steve John. Honorary Pallbeareres; Wendell Hill and Joe Meier. Burial at Garden Grove Cemetery in Garden Grove, Iowa.

Velda Mae Smith was born on November 11, 1925 at Clearfield, Iowa to H. Fern and Verna F. (Hayes) Phillips. She departed this life on February 14, 1995 at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa.

She spent her early years in the Lenox area graduating from the Lenox High School.

On April 14, 1945 she was united in marriage to T.L. Dukes. On May 23, 1964 she was united in marriage to Dale Smith. Dale preceded her in death in January of 1986.

Along with her husbands, Velda owned and operated the Diagonal Snooker Parlor and the Garden Grove Tavern. They retired in the mid 80's and moved to Lenox for a short time and on to Prescott where she spent the past several years.

Velda enjoyed being outdoors where she enjoyed her favorite hobbies of fishing and traveling. She also greatly appreciated the many friends she made through the years while in business.

Preceding Velda in death were her parents, husbands and an infant child.

Left to mourn Velda's passing are an aunt, Gertrude Beatty of Lenox, cousins and a special friend Betty Meier.

Spring, Carl Floyd -

Funeral services for Carl Floyd Spring, 80, of Lenox were held Monday, Jan. 16, at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Dean Woldruff officiating. He died January 14, 1995, at Mercy Hospital in Corning.

Casket bearers were Marvin Reed, Don Copeland, Harold Spring, Craig Bryant, Don Barker and Richard Hayes.

Music was provided by Linda Spring and Jan Bryant.

Interment was at West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Carl was born August 5, 1914, in Adams County, Iowa. He was the youngest of four children born to John and Minnie Ritter Spring.

At the age of 3, his family moved to a farm southwest of Lenox. He attended Grove Center Country School and Lenox High School, graduating with the Class of 1932.

On Dec. 20, 1937, Carl was married to Ethel Lucille Barker. One daughter, Carolyn, was born to this union.

Carl was a member of the Lenox Christian Church and several community organizations in Lenox. He held many offices both in the

church and in civic organizations. He worked in and around Lenox all of his life and retired from Hawkeye Lumber Yard after 27 years.

Carl volunteered many hours working in some capacity at the Lenox Rodeo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ethel; sister Ruth Young; and two brothers, Harry and Earnest Spring.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn (husband Nolan) Gilstad of Des Moines; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Vanderpluym, Paul Louis -

Paul Louis Vanderpluym was born August 9, 1920 near Diagonal, Iowa to Louis and Elizabeth (McManus) Vanderpluym. He departed this

life on January 29, 1995 at the Grater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa.

He spent his lifetime around the Diagonal community. He was a graduate of Lenox High School.

On December 26, 1940 he was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Canny. Two daughters, Willetta and Susan were born to this union.

Paul was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Maloy, Iowa.

Left to survive are his wife Mary of Diagonal; two daughters, Willetta (husband Jim) George of Diagonal and Susan Kinney of Mount Ayr,

Iowa; five grandchildren, RaNa (husband Bob) Bailey, Pat George, Shawn (husband Marty) Cameron, Colby Homes and Renante Kinney, five great-grandchildren, Ryan and Chad Bailey, Levi, Taylor and Bailey Jo Cameron. Also four sisters; Veldeva Morris Rees, Martena (husband Burl) Mobley, Lucille Johnson and Frances (husband Ted) Bicker Jr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant sister and four brothers-in-law, Lewis Morris, Bernard Rees, Melvin Johnson and Tom Canny.

In loving memory of Paul Louis Vanderpluym who was born August 9, 1920 and died: January 29, 1995. Services were held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Maloy, Iowa on Wednesday, February 1, 1995 at 10:30 o'clock a.m. Officiating was Fr. Greg

Leach. Organist was Mrs. Claire Newton.

Casketbearers were Pat George, Wyatt Mobley, Brian Mobley, Greg Powell, Greg Mobley and Danny Rinehart. Honorary pallbearers were Russell Davenport, Don Burch, John Davenport, Cecil Smith, Roger Payne, Robert Schaefer, Wallace Sobotka and George Bailey.

He was laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery Maloy, Iowa, Wilson-Watson Service.
