Schrader, Clinton George -
A
year ago, I was a dream, a hope, a wish. Yet with the passing of time I became
a reality. I was welcomed into this world on October 11, 1990 at the Clarinda
Municipal Hospital. There was a lot of joy over my arrival, especially by my
mom, Renee, my dad, Shane, and my big brother Taylor. They named me Clinton
George Schrader.
Soon
after, I was introduced to other family members and we shared many happy
moments together. I also met my grandparents: Larry and Bonnie Schrader from
Lenox, and C. Horton and Bette Lee from Bedford. I even had great grandparents,
Don and Mineva Tully and Mrs. Alma Schrader of Lenox
and Mrs. Eulalia Short of Bedford. It seemed those
first days of my life were so exciting. I came to discover I had six aunts and
seven uncles and 13 cousins. Wow! What a big family.
I
was able to enjoy a Thanksgiving with my family and my first Christmas.
On
January 3, 1991 I died at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. I want you to know I have gone to join my
grandfather Lowell Duane Hill and my great grandparents, Clinton and Iva Hill,
George Schrader and Clifford Short in that life beyond this world. As you know,
I was named after Clinton and George.
I
know my death has left great sadness of heart to all my family who were so
excited to see me. I will miss you. You will miss me. Love, Clinton George
Schrader.
A

Walter, Margaret Ethel Tallman -
Funeral
services for Margaret E. Walter were held Saturday, Feb. 9, 1991 at the Stringtown Community Church with Rev. Donald Briley and Rev. Jeanne Groom officiating. Interment was in
Salem Cemetery, Adams County, Iowa.
Margaret
Ethel Walter was born March 18, 1909 in Blue Mound, Kan., the daughter of
Robert L. and Elizabeth E. (Costin) Tallman. Her
family moved to El Dorado Springs, Mo., and then later to Prescott, Iowa.
Margaret graduated from Prescott High School, and
began
what would be a long and deeply committed career as a teacher.
Margaret
taught from 1929 in country schools, until her marriage on Christmas Eve of
1936 to Dale Walter. During the years as a teacher in one room country schools,
she lived with families in the district, working for board and room, and
teaching as well. Each
summer
she went to school herself, working toward her degree. Often the boys in her
classes were bigger than she, and it took a strong determination to teach them,
but she did so with a somewhat stern, but always fair approach. She never had a
student she did not like,
nor
a discipline problem she could not handle. Margaret was a tough teacher, but
because she wanted the best for her students. She spent many hours preparing
for classes and then grading papers. But she could have fun, too. Recess time
might very well find her
playing
ball with the kids on the playground. Over her years of teaching she had more
than one generation of a family, many times.
Her
career as a teacher was put 'on hold' for a few years while she raised her own
two children, always with a teacher's penchant for helping them to learn some
lesson from life's experiences. During these years raising her family she
became involved in community
activities
also. She helped to start a neighborhood club called the Story Hour Club; she
worked as a 4-H leader; and one year served as camp cook because there was no
one else to do it. She enjoyed gardening, and felt that almost any ailment she
had could be cured
by
getting into her garden and digging in the .soil. She and Dale enjoyed picking
strawberries and raspberries together, and she enjoyed canning. This past year
was the only one in their 54 years of marriage that they were not able to
harvest the berries together.
Margaret
also liked to sew and crochet. She made most of her children's clothes for
several years, and made many a prom dress even later for granddaughters. She
taught her granddaughter to crochet; and she knit baby booties for countless
children born into the
family,
and the whole neighborhood. Often she would knit booties for the new baby of
some former student, now grown.
Margaret
worked hard on the farm, milking cows each morning and evening, as well as
doing the usual household tasks, caring for her husband and children. In 1953
she was honored by Wallace's Farmer magazine as one of their Outstanding Iowa
Homemakers of
the
year. The whole family went to Des Moines for the ceremony where she would
receive this honor. While in Des Moines they were featured on a local
television program as a 'typical Iowa farm family'. This was exciting for all
of them. Then again, in 1965, she
received
special recognition as a rural homemaker. The Corning Chamber of Commerce
recognized her as Outstanding Rural Homemaker of Adams County.
In
1956 she resumed her teaching career when a teacher became ill and a substitute
was needed for the spring semester. After that semester she resumed a full time
teaching career, going to evening classes and summer classes every year for 12
years. In 1965 she received her Bachelor's Degree in Child Development from
Iowa State University. This was an accomplishment that she and her family were
very proud of.
Retirement
years again brought more time for neighbors and home, and for community
activities. She spent many hours doing research into Adams County genealogy,
helping to complete records for many of the small country cemeteries. Margaret
was never idle, always finding a pair of overalls that needed patching, a pair
of booties to knit, or some weeding to be done in the garden.
Margaret
was a member of the Stringtown Community Church, but
also enjoyed visiting other churches, including the Prescott Church, and
attending ecumenical services.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, and by her brother George.
She
is survived by her husband Dale, of Prescott; a son Larry Walter, and wife
Sharon, of Prescott; a daughter Kathryn Mallard of Lenexa, Kan.; and five
grandchildren: Bobby Walter and Estee Walter of Prescott; Anita Mittag and her husband Craig of Jefferson,
Iowa;
Dale Knoop of Overland Park, Kan.; and Jane Knoop of Lenexa, Kan.; also two brothers, Frank Tallman and
Ralph Tallman, both of rural Creston; many nieces and nephews will remember her
fondly and her many friends and neighbors will share the family's sense of
loss,
and appreciation for her life having touched theirs.
Memorials
given to the family will be directed to the Ruth B. Sayres Scholarship Fund of the National Homemakers Association, in recognition of
Margaret's lifelong interest in education and also in being a good homemaker.
